The Take

A team in a desperate situation will have one of its last chances against a team that is getting strionger week by week when Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens (13-9) welcomes Unics Kazan (7-15) on Friday night in the Greek capital. Unics is in the lead 1-2 in the head-to-head historic record between both teams in the EuroLeague, as the Russian squad survived the Greens at home in Round 15, 83-81, as Demetris Nichols missed the last shot that would have sent the game into the extra session. Keith Langford, who else, led Unics that night with his 27 points and 5 assists, while Nick alathes had 23 for Panathinaikos. Mike James leads the hosts in scoring (14.2 ppg.), followed by KC Rivers (11.4 ppg.) and Chris Singleton (11.4 ppg. and 5.8 rpg.). For Unics, Langford leads the team - and the league - in scoring (22.3 ppg. plus 3.8 apg.), helped by Artsiom Parakhouski (12.1 ppg. and 5.5 rpg.) and Quino Colom (11.1 ppg. and 5.6 apg.). Both teams rank among the five weakest offenses in the league, but Panathinaikos makes up for it with the third best defense in the EuroLeague (75.6 ppg.) while Unics allows for more than 80 points per night. So the Greens will look to impose their defensive level helped by the crowd at OAKA, and if they manage to stop Langford, they will be on their way to the win. On the other side, Unics dominates in free throw percentage (78.6%) and will be also looking to send the Greens to the stripe as much as possible, since they are the weakest team in the competition from that distance. The hosts will count on its duo of guards formed by Calathes and James to launch the offense, and Unics will need backup for Langford and spread the offensive contribution a little more if they intend on snapping a five-game losing streak. Panathinaikos, having won three of its last four games, stands in a good position to strengthen its ranking in the standings, but it cannot subestimate an Unics team that has its life on the line with this game.
