THE TAKE

The stars will be out in Athens on Tuesday when Panathinaikos hosts Dynamo Moscow in Game 1 of their best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series at the Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA) in the Greek capital. The game features the return to Greece of a pair of local heroes in Dynamo big men Antonis Fotsis and Lazaros Papadopoulos, former Euroleague champions with Panathinaikos, not to mention stars on the Greek national team that is both reigning European champion and World Championships runner-up. Likewise, the series pits a pair of mastermind coaches, Zeljko Obradovic of Panathinaikos and Dusan Ivkovic of Dynamo, against one another. They know each other as well as possible after having worked together at the helm of the Yugoslavian national team. The Greens worked their way into the quarterfinals by winning their first five games in Top 16 Group F before dropping the meaningless sixth game. Dynamo placed second in Group G after edging Benetton Treviso in overtime in the group's last game. The familiarity of the players and teams makes this a series where virtually anything can happen. The highlights will be inside, where Fotsis, Papadopoulos and reserve Obinna Ekezie will go up against the deep, experienced Panathinaikos frontcourt of Mike Batiste, Dejan Tomasevic, Kostas Tsartsaris, Demos Dikoudis and Robertas Javtokas. Dynamo, likely to slow the pace to hinder the potent Panathinaikos attack, is dependant upon the defense of its guards - Bojan Popovic, Taquan Dean, Sergey Monya and Eddie Gill - against the likes of Dimitrios Diamantidis, Sani Becirovic, Nikos Natzivrettas and Milos Vujanic. The Greens need their depth, especially considering that all-purpose perimeter threat Ramunas Siskauskas is out of action with an injury and inspirational backup Fragiskos Alvertis has been sick and might not play. The big hole in Dynamo's lineup is another small forward, Travis Hansen, whose season ended early with an injjry. Dynamo is visiting Greece for the third time this season, having lost to Olympiacos in the regular season and beaten Aris in the Top 16. Dynamo has been strong on the road in general, with five victories on its last seven trips. On the other hand, Panathinaikos is 9-1 at home this season. Its homecourt advantage could be a big boost for the Greens, although the players will still need to produce on the floor. If either Fotsis or Papadopoulos falls into early foul trouble, it could be a long night for the visitors. However, if Dynamo can slow the pace, hit outside shots and still use its big men effectively, this game could easily turn into a thriller of classic proportions.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"For Panathinaikos, the games against Dynamo Moscow are the final obstacles before the Final Four, and that is the way we consider them. We are facing a very capable team that we watched in all its six games of the Top 16 and some recent games of the Russian Suproleague. I am sure their last two losses in the domestic league are not important at all, while they have had some bad moments against Benetton Treviso as well. They have a great coach and many quality players like Lazaros Papadopoulos and Antonis Fotsis, who used to play for Panathinaikos and definitely they are going to occupy the Greek audience. We are expecting a tough series and there is no doubt that we will show up prepared to fight for our goal."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"Everybody knows who is Panathinaikos and what the club has done in European basketball over the last 12 years. They were the favorite of this competition before the start of the season, and remain the favorite now when just eight teams remain. Our problem not is only the great Panathinaikos, but the fact that we are so far from our form of January. Of course, if we had played like we did in January, our opponent today would not be Panathinaikos and the homecourt advantage would be for us. This game doesn't come in such a good moment for us. We are lost the last two games in the Russian League, but we must try to react. I hope that the two Greek players on our team, both ex-members of Panathinaikos, will not feel imprisoned with the atmosphere in OAKA. Our first target in this game will be to find our playing level from January, or at least to get close to it."

Players

DIKOUDIS, DIMOS
Panathinaikos
"Panathinaikos is in the Euroleague playoffs with the home advantage, something that we fought for during the Top 16. We are a better team than Dynamo Moscow, but we have to demonstrate it on the court. Our goal is to take the 1-0 lead and afterwards to finish the series and seal the qualification towards the Final Four of Athens. The fact that I know Dusan Ivkovic, a coach that has taught me a lot of things, doesn't mean anything. It is something between the coaches, not a coach and a player. Right now, the only thing I have on my mind is how to make it towards the Final Four."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Dynamo Moscow
"This match will be very different than all 20 played until now. First, this is a playoff to go to the Final Four or not, and nobody has to right to make mistake. Second, we will play against the big favorite, and not only favorite for the fact that the Final Four will be in Athens. Third, I will play against my ex-team, against some of my ex-teammates. Finally, for the first time this season we are 'outsiders', not given much of a chance, in a Euroleague game. We must to see how we will react in this situation."
Ramunas Siskauskas - Panathinaikos Panathinaikos took the penultimate step toward its dream of playing the Final Four at home when it overwhelmed visiting Dynamo Moscow 80-58 in their first Quarterfinal Playoffs game on Tuesday at Athens Olympic Indoor Arena (OAKA) in the Greek capital. One more victory in their best-of-three series would put the Greens in the Final Four, to be played May 4 to 6 at OAKA. Game 2 comes on Thursday in Moscow and a third game, if necessary, would be a week later back in Athens. Panathinaikos got a big boost early from a player returning early from injury, swingman Ramunas Siskauskas, and never looked back on the way to victory. Sani Becirovic paced the winners with 17 points, while Siskauskas finished with 16 and Mike Batiste 10. The Greens outrebounded Dynamo 34-24, too. Panathinaikos rode 10 first-quarter points from Siskauskas to double-digit leads that it never saw threatened the rest of the way. Dynamo was clearly hurt by foul trouble to Lazaros Papadopoulos, who single-handedly put his team ahead 2-5 after the tipoff but finished playing just 16 minutes and scoring 7 points. Meanwhile, his Dynamo teammates made just 2 of 16 three-point tries on the night. Obinna Ekezie led the guests with 15 points, while Taquan Dean added 14.

Dynamo got on the scoreboard first as Papadopoulos grabbed an offensive rebound that led to a jumper by Dimitri Domani. There followed a series of empty possessions until Panathinaikos tied 2-2 on a drive by Sani Becirovic. Dynamo again fed the ball inside to Papadopoulos, whose three-point play put the guests in front, 2-5. The Greens replied stronger now, with a 6-0 blast based on 4 points by Batiste and a layup by Dimitris Diamantidis. Worse still for Dynamo was that Papadopulos headed to the bench with two personal fouls, which meant that another of the guests needed to pick up the scoring slack for Dynamo. That didn't happen, but on the Panathinaikos side, Siskauskas heated up quickly in his early return from an injury. He knocked down a triple to boost the margin to 13-7, while Dynamo continued having trouble scoring against the typical swarming defense of the Greens. Fotsis tried to change that with free throws, but Dynamo was held without a field goal for more than 7 minutes. Siskauskas took over then, rattling off 7 straight points to lead Panathinaikos to an emphatic 23-11 advantage after one quarter.

Taquan Dean - Dynamo MoscowAs the second quarter got underway, Siskauskas punished Dynamo's zone defense with his third triple of the game, while Papadopoulos committed an offensive charging foul that forced him out of the game again. Dynamo was vulnerable defensively and soon Panathinaikos galloped to a 32-15 lead midway through the quarter with Dimos Dikoudis, Nikos Hatzivrettas and Dejan Tomasevic all hitting baskets. Dynamo was again struggling for points, as over a period of 6 minutes, Obinna Ekezie was its only scorer, as his 7 points got the guests within 35-19. Panathinaikos was scoring in bunches, however, as Dikoudis showed his versatility with a triple and a dunk that made it 40-21. Ekezie kept his own scoring burst going for Dynamo, but Panathinaikos remained in charge as time ticked away toward the break with Diamantidis unleashing a last triple, good for a resounding 46-27 lead at intermission for the hosts.

The second half started with an air ball by Sergey Monia, another bad sign for Dynamo, which needed all the extra scorers it could identify. Fotsis was not willing to go down without a fight and emphatically rejected Robertas Javtokas in an attempt to awaken his teammates. And so he did, as Taquan Dean and then Bojan Popovic pulled Dynamo as close as 49-34. Papadopoulos, who was facing double- and triple-teams all night, then managed to get to the foul line and cap a 0-7 run for the guests. Panathinaikos steadied itself quickly, however, as Batiste was brought in from the bench and soon finished a fastbreak to restore a 54-36 advantage for the Greens. Halfway through the third quarter, after a Dynamo timeout, Panathinaikos kicked into turbo gear and with Batiste as its go-to-guy burst ahead 63-38 after 30 minutes.

Sani Becirovic - PanathinaikosThe final quarter opened with Panathinaikos attacking at full speed and consecutive baskets by Becirovic putting any hopes of a Dynamo comeback out of reach. Behind a triple by Milos Vujanic, the Greens breezed to a 72-44 lead. As a result the rest of the game turned into a practice with both teams embarking on a more up-tempo style of play, the starters resting on the bench and the coaches making their plans for Thursday’s second game in Moscow.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"I want to congratulate my players because they were determined to win tonight. Of course, it's important that we won the first game of the series, however there is always room for improvement. I have to admit, though, that what satisfied me is the fact that once again our players proved that each one of them is valuable and can contribute."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"Of course, I am happy that I returned to Greece, however I am very disappointed with our performance tonight. It seems that only one team appeared on the court. Yes, there is no doubt that we are Euroleague debutants, yet this is not an excuse. It looked as though we played without passion. Moreover, the early fouls of Papadopoulos caused us a lot of trouble. Anyhow, the bottom line is that the players of Panathinaikos were concentrated throughout the game and deserved to win."

Players

TOMASEVIC, DEJAN
Panathinaikos
"Our goal was to shut down Papadopoulos and Fotsis, which we did as they both scored a total of two field goals. We played good defense tonight and we didn't allow Dynamo to find any rhythm offensively."
POPOVIC, BOJAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We didn't do a good job defensively, yet the main problem tonight was that we played very poorly on offense. We knew that Panathinaikos plays some stifling defense and we were practicing in order to be effective against them. However, during the game we did everything wrong. We missed a lot of shots and after Papadopoulos, who is our best player, was in foul trouble, that made things hard for us."
