THE TAKE

A battle for an upper hand in the positioning dance of Group C takes place in Barcelona, Spain, where AXA FCB hosts Chorale Roanne on Thursday at 20:45 CET. Both teams are tied at 1-1 in the Group C standings, one win away from undefeated Partizan, Real Madrid and Panathinaikos. Barcelona comes off a 82-67 home win against Fenerbahce Ulker, as Jordi Trias led 5 players in double digits with 14 points. Trias is a key piece in this game, as he will have to use all his defensive skills to stop star forward Marc Salyers, in what is arguably the key matchup of the game. Salyers, the French League MVP last season, is a natural-born mismatch due to his power, speed and deep range, but he might have it tough against two athletic big men like Trias and Fran Vazquez. Meanwhile, Mario Kasun will test his strength against Pape Badiane, who has been the x-factor for Roanne so far. Chorale also counts on Norman Nolan to provide post skills and mid-range shots, more or less what veteran center Denis Marconato offers Barcelona. The point guard battle will also be interesting, as Jaka Lakovic will try to use his advantage in experience against Marc-Antoine Pellin and Pierric Poupet. Lakovic has been unstoppable so far, being used a off-guard when pass-first playmaker Pepe Sanchez is on court, and is having his best season in Barcelona. Pellin will try to speed the game tempo, as well as getting scoring ace Brion Rush involved. Rush has proved to have unlimited range and clutch, hitting critical shots against Brose Baskets and Partizan. Gianluca Basile and Ersan Ilyasova will test their scoring skills against Rush and Adam Hess, while Roger Grimau and especially Michel Morandais will have the tough mission to shut down Rush in this game. Barcelona will have more chances to win if it dominates the game tempo with Sanchez and Lakovic sharing minutes and if Trias manages to win his battle against Salyers. At the same time, Chorale needs to speed up its offense to play its usual brand of basketball. Even when Barcelona is the heavy favourite in this game, Roanne will try to get its second road win in its Euroleague return after almost a half-a-century absence.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"Many of the plays run by the French team are made for two players, Rush and Salyers. They are used to playing for both of them and they tend to take almost 15 shots per game. When they don't shoot, those guys can find the open man. Badiane and Nolan are two useful plauyers in the inside game and Hess is a good scorer. They play good defense and make a lot of steals. If we don’t commit too many turnovers, they will be not able to run."

"This is a very important game for both teams. We all know that we need to win in all of our home games in order to make the Top 16. Chorale Roanne is a better team than people think. They played really well in the French championship last year. Their three-pointers are a key point for their game."

Salyers opened the third quarter with a one-handed fast break dunk, as Barcelona struggled to beat the guests' man-to-man defense now. Kasun made free throws but Pellin buried a four-meter shot to get Roanne within 44-38. Barcelona kept running its offense through Kasun but a floating layup by Salyers still kept Roanne close. Kasun kept leading Barcelona with a three-point play while Rush finished a third-chance Roanne offense with a five-meter shot. Roanne had improved its aggressivity in defense, while a dominant Badiane dunked it and Salyers added a power layup to make Barcelona call timeout at 49-46. Barcelona opted to attack the basket and Kasun shined with a put-back jump hook but Salyers fired in a seven-meter bomb to make it a two-point game, 51-49. Lakovic rescued Barcelona with a three-pointer while Sanchez had a no-look, behind-the-back pass that allowed Trias to dunk it for a 56-49 AXA lead. Salyers stayed unstoppable with a second-chance basket but Lakovic answered from downtown for a 59-51 Barcelona lead after three quarters.

Roger Grimau - AXA FC BarcelonaGrimau boosted the hosts' lead to double digits with a driving basket but Roanne was not done. Rush took over with a fast break layup while Salyers added a left-handed tip-in to give Roanne some hope, 70-64.
