THE TAKE

A pivotal game in Group C takes place in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday, when Maroussi BC welcomes Caja Laboral for a Group C clash. Maroussi has already registered two home losses to drop to 1-2 and cannot afford a third one if the team wants to be in a position to fight for a Top 16 spot. Meanwhile, Laboral comes off a road win at Union Olimpia to improve to 2-1 and wants to lock a Top 16 berth as soon as possible and then focus on winning Group C. Laboral faces some injury problems, as playmaker Marcelo Huertas is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks while sharpshooter Chris Lofton is questionable, too. With Huertas sidelined, head coach Dusko Ivanovic only has Pau Ribas available at point guard. Fernando San Emeterio and Brad Oleson will try to share the playmaker duties when Ribas needs a rest. Maroussi is deeper at point guard with Billy Keys as its floor general and Igor Milosevic coming off the bench. There is good news for Maroussi as Michalis Pelekanos and Kostas Kaimakoglou are fully recovered from the H1N1 flu and ready to share playing time at the wings. Jamon Lucas brings great scoring skills at shooting guard, while Marios Batis is set to see extended playing time, with Georgios Diamantopoulos questionable against Laboral. Pelekanos faces a key matchup against Carl English, an outstanding scorer looking to prove his value. Batis and Kaimakoglou will test their shooting skills against San Emeterio and Oleson. Meanwhile, Laboral will be concerned with stopping Kaimakoglou and Vladimir Micov may be a good option for coach Ivanovic. Laboral runs its offense through center Tiago Splitter and versatile forward Mirza Teletovic, a terrific three-point shooter who helps the team in many ways. Splitter has a critical matchup against Dimitrios Mavroeidis, an old-school center with nice post skills. Teletovic faces blue-collar big guys Jared Homan and Levon Kendall. Laboral counts on Lior Eliyahu to make the difference with his transition game off the bench, with Stanko Barac offering shooting range and size off the bench. With Stephen Arigbabu sidelined, Pat Calathes will see more minutes at power forward. Laboral must play up-tempo and find low post options for Splitter and pick-and-pop opportunities for Teletovic. Maroussi must use strong defense and play under control all 40 minutes in a key game for the hosts.

Quotes Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"Now they have a new name, but this is a great team, with a lot of successes and a big basketball tradition. I appreciate their roster and their coach and I think that we have to play at the highest level to beat them, especially to put them in our rhythm and not allow them to run. We have already lost two home games to CSKA Moscow and Lottomatica Roma, but we keep our enthusiasm and we are still learning a lot from every match. Now we can count on two more players, Pelekanos and Diamantopoulos and we can improve our rotation."

Players

MAVROEIDIS, DIMITRIOS
Maroussi BC
" I have a lot of appreciation and respect for Caja Laboral, which gives my team another motivation in order to try hard to beat them. Sure, we have to pay attention to our transition game in order to stop their fast break game. Personally, I am looking forward to meeting and playing against Tiago Spliter, who is one of the best center in the world."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Caja Laboral
“I think it’s going to be a tough, difficult game, like every road game in the Euroleague. It’s very important because after beating Olimpija last week we face a great opportunity to stay atop in our group and get closer to the Top 16, which is our target. I think that beating them in Greece would be a big blow for them, as they have already lost two home games. It’s still early, though, but looking at how tough is winning a road game in this competition, we could set a large distance between them and we. We knew that the beginning of the season was going to be tough for us, because of the injuries. We had a lot of injured players, even some of them got hurt again right after joining back the team, like Marcelo, but we are trying to overcome this and we managed to win most of the games so far. When you play in a big arena as OAKA but there are no many fans there, it’s a strange feeling, but this is something we cannot think of a lot. We must focus only on what will happen on court."
Carl English - Caja laboralFor the second week in a row, this time with more fireworks, Caja Laboral took its show on the road and registered a Group C road win by pulling away from host Maroussi BC 86-103 on Wednesday in Athens. Caja Laboral raised its record to 3-1, which will be good enough to either own second place or tie for first when the week ends in Group C. Maroussi fell to 1-3 and fifth place heading into a one-week break in the regular season. The visitors led early, the hosts fought back before halftime, but the experience of Caja Laboral served to take the game back shortly after the break and not let the outcome be threatened after that. Five different Caja Laboral shooters made 2 or more three-point shots as the team blasted 14 of its 22 attempts from the arc to decide the game. Carl English led the winners with 17 points, including 3 three-pointers. Mirsa Teletovic had 4 of those triples among his 16 points, the same total as Fernando San Emeterio. Lior Eliyahu added 12 points and Pau Ribas 10 for the winners. Maroussi got 23 points off the bench from Kostas Kaimakoglou, 14 each from Jared Homan and Jamon Lucas, and 10 more from Dimitrios Mavroeidis. Levon Kendall sank a three-pointer and made a block on defense to start the game right for the hosts, who took an early 7-4 lead. Caja Laboral reacted immediately with a huge 0-11 run highlighted by 5 points from Tiago Splitter and a triple by Ribas. Worse for Maroussi, Kendall went down then with an injury to his leg which will keep him sidelined for at least two months, the team said afterward. Meanwhile San Emeterio climbed off the visitors bench and soon proved to be on fire with 9 consecutive points based on 2 three pointers and a traditional three-point basket-plus-free throw. As a result of his explosion, Caja Laboral soared ahead by 16-27 at the end of the first quarter.

Maroussi head coach Giorgos Bartzokas tried to improve his team's perimeter defense and ball-handling by trying a scheme with three point guards - Billy Keys, Marios Batis and Igor Milosevic - which worked enough to cut the margin to 26-32. San Emeterio came up big again for the visitors, however, scoring again from behind the arc to extend the gap to 26-35. As Caja Laboral built a tremendous percentage in three-point shots, the visitors had an answer every time that Maroussi tried to come back. When Keys also drained a three-pointer at 33-41, Caja Laboral kept on rolling despite Splitter and San Eeterio committing third personal fouls already. English hit another big triple for an 11-point lead, 37-48, but Maroussi didn't surrender. With Homan and Kaimakoglou sharing the scoring, the hosts drew within 43-49. With off-setting triples for either side by Teletovic and Michailis Pelekanos, the end of the first half found Caja Laboral still 6 points ahead, 46-52.

Jared Homan - Maroussi BCCaja Laboral started the third quarter at full speed, with Brad Oleson and Ribas continuing its amazing shooting performance from downtown. Maroussi grabbed offensive boards and had second chances shots, but couldn't find the bottom of the basket and missed a lot of free throws. That quickly, the visitors had a 3-10 and had opened up a 49-62 advantage. Maroussi switched its defense from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone to try to stay competitive, but Caja Laboral had a lot of alternatives, especially from the perimeter, and with Teletovic hitting more shots and Stanko Barac helping at the foul line, the visitors finished the third quarter with a 14-point gap, 65-79.

With Caja Laboral transforming the night into a shooting display, Maroussi didn't have much of chance to react. Early in the fourth quarter, English sank another big three to make push the difference above 20 points, to 67-88. Thanks to a succession of three-pointers and fastbreaks after that, Caja Laboral offered a lot of basketball highlights and registered an easy and spectacular win on the road, 86-103.

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"This is the worst game we have played so far, but we have to realize where we are and who we play against. I have no complaints against my players, but it is clear that trying hard is not enough. We allowed our opponents to find some open and easy shots that killed us. The score got high, and we are not able to follow this kind of game. In any case, we got a lesson which might be very useful in the future. We are also very sad because Levon Kendall suffered a serious injury and we will miss him for at least two months."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We played against a good and tough team, and this is a very important road win for us on the way to the Top-16. Usually I prefer to get the wins through our defense, but today it was all about offense. We had some great shots from outside, and when we took a lead, we kept on going."
