THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas will look to snap a two-game slide when it hosts Cibona Zagreb on Wednesday night at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. L. Rytas was one of the last remaining undefeated teams when it beat Aris TT Bank to take over first place in Group B three weeks ago, but back-to-back defeats since against Efes Pilsen and at Unicaja dropped the team into a three-way tie for second place at 4-2. Meanwhile Cibona has won two of its last three to improve to 3-3 and climb into a tie for fifth place – the last that brings with it automatic passage to the Top 16. However the Croatian champion has yet to win on the road this season. L. Rytas's scoring can be seen as a direct culprit for its last two defeats. After averaging 83.8 points per game in its first four, the team has posted 70 and 69 points over its last two games. A key to jumpstarting the offense is playmaker Hollis Price, who committed 7 turnovers last week. Head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic will likely look to his big guys to lead the scoring charge this week against a Cibona side that has struggled with its interior defense. Accordingly, big men Marijonas Petravicius and Matt Nielsen and forward Chuck Eidson should get plenty of shots against Cibona's Sam Hoskin, Luksa Andric and Vedran Vukusic. Cibona's points are mostly generated on the wings where the athletic combo of Larry Ayuso and Chris Warren can cut to the basket or hit from outside. They'll have to create points this week at the expense of Arturas Jomantas and Mindaugas Lukauskis. The keys to the Cibona attack are shared between the experienced Damir Mulaomerovic and the younger and more athletic Tre Kelley. Those two will need to overcome the fact that their team is last in the league in assists to create more points than usual – Cibona has averaged a mere 69.3 points on the road so far. L. Rytas remains the favorite at home, especially against a team like Cibona that has struggled on the road. However with some experienced and streaky backcourt scorers, Cibona has the potential to challenge and make this game an exciting encounter.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"Cibona has been known in the Euroleague for decades. Even if the coaches and players come and go too often, the club still maintains the quality. Cibona always combines perfectly the freshness of the young and the experience of veterans. They use that formula in each position, or instance a young Kelley and veteran Mulaomerovic as playmakers. In addition, they have two really different scorers. Warren is more of an all-around scorer and Ayuso tends to shoot from outside. Basically, Cibona is a well-built team that almost every year somehow manages to reach the Top 16. We respect them very much for their history but if we play hard and be tough on the court, we will achieve a win on Wednesday."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"When we were talking about our group at the beginning of the season, I pointed out that Lietuvos Rytas is one of the teams that plays the best basketball in it. Although they also have some foreign players, they have kept the famous Lithuanian style of basketball, with lots of running and shooting, and it will be extremely hard to try to surprise them in front of their fans. It is our job to try to repeat some of our games from this year's Euroleague, or to be precise, to take the best parts from the five games that we played well (not counting defeat at Unicaja) and then we might be in a position to do something on their court. As I am always pointing out, with our team offense is not a question, but we must concentrate on defense to be able to compete with the best teams."

Players

LUKAUSKIS, MINDAUGAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We feel we must win after an unlucky game in Malaga. We now lost twice in a row, so we're gonna try hard to bounce back with our fifth win. I've seen a couple of Cibona's games this season. It's a fast team that includes great shooters. They try to land so many triples in a game. It's also athletic, so I think it's gonna be interesting. This team has character, they never give up, even if they're down by 20. They came back hugely in their game against Maccabi. It's gonna be tough because I suppose Cibona doesn't really care where they play, at home or away."
MULAOMEROVIC, DAMIR
Cibona
"This is another really difficult away game against a very talented and home-court oriented team. We are still looking for our first away win and I hope we will be concentrated enough to be in the game for 40 minutes this time. I have a lot of experience playing versus Lithuanian clubs and I know they are always very athletic and play modern-type basketball. They have nucleus of the team made of Lithuanian players and they are the most dangerous thing for us. Basketball is in Lithuania still the number one national sport and it will be a great pleasure to play there."
Marijonas Petravicius - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas shook off a two-game losing streak and returned to the top of Group B by dominating Cibona for a 93-59 home win in Vilnius, Lithuania on Wednesday. The victory gave L. Rytas a 5-2 record, the same as Unicaja after it lost simultaneously at Efes Pilsen. At the halfway mark in the regular season, both will tie for the group lead with either Maccabi or Aris after those teams play Thursday. Cibona, now 3-4, fell to sixth place. L. Rytas took a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to victory. Marijonas Petravicius paced the winners inside the paint, with 17 points, while Chuck Eidson and Hollis Price poured in 13 each from the perimeter. Kenan Bajramovic came off the bench for 13 more, wile Darrel Mitchell, in what is believed to be his last game for L. Rytas, added 10. For Cibona, three players managed to score in double digits: Sam Hoskin with 21 points, Damir Mulaomerovic with 16 and Chris Warren with 10. The rest of the team combined managed only 12 points, however.

Vedran Vukuric scored to get Cibona on the scoreboard first, and then L. Rytas had really bad news as Hoolis Price fell hard and left the game. His substitute, Mindaugas Lukauskis, arrived more than ready, scoring off an offensive rebound and forcing a technical foul on Marin Rozic to put the hosts ahead 5-2. Cibona was shook but not broken, as Vukusic, Damir Mulaoemrovic and Warren fueled a 0-6 run to put the visitors ahead, 5-8. Matt Nielsen and Eidson answered for L. Rytas to make it 12-8, after which Cibona went cold for 3 minutes against the hosts' defense Hoskin finally scored a difficult jumper to which Rozic added a free throw at 14-11. Bajramovic penetrated for a basket as soon as he entered for L. Rytas, and after Eidson landed his second triple, Mitchell added free throws for the game's first double-digit advantage on the way to a 23-14 lead after 10 minutes.

Sam Hoskin - CibonaPrice came back on court to start the second quarter by assisting Arturas Jomantas for a three-pointer. Cibona looked confused on offense, while Petravicius pushed the hosts way ahead at 30-14. Shooting ace Larry Ayuso stepped on court for Cibona, but perhaps it was too late already as L. Rytas followed Eidson's scoring to a huge 34-14 lead after just 13 minutes. Cibona still had no points in the quarter while L. Rytas had made 11 of 13 two-point shots in the game so far. Warren broke the silece for the visitors and Luksa Andric added a free throw at 36-17, but Bajramovic matched them with a triple. With Ayuso completely shut down, Cibona had to find other ways to score which it did but not enough to start reducing the deficit, which hit 44-23 after free throws by hot Bajramovic. Mitchell widened the lead even more, converting a triple before L. Rytas headed to the lockers in total command, 47-25 at halftime.

Both teams were silent for the first minute after the break, until Hoskins found his way to the basket, 47-27. Hoskins scored again as L. Rytas looked sluggish on offense until the energetic Price stepped up with a three-point play, his first points all game, and Lukauskis flew to the hoop to make it 54-29. Mulaomerovic tried to spark Cibona with 5 points in a minute but was matched by Nielsen and Petravicius as the game and the intrigue eased. L. Rytas got the better of the ensuing exchang of baskets unitl a three by Eidson gave the hosts an enormous 65-38 lead. Ayuso scored his first points for Cibona, but L. Rytas was already too far ahead 70-42 after 30 minutes.

Bajramovic detonated a massive dunk off a dish by Price to keep the fans pumped in the fourth quarter. He and Mitchell, who was due to be released following this game, didn't let Cibona even think about getting just a little closer. After a timeout, Ayuso left with an injury while L. Rytas brought in fan favorite Andrius Slezas, an original L. Rytas player, to an explosion of joy at Siemens Arena. The losing streak was over, L. Rytas was back in first place in Group B, and all was right with basketball fans in Vilnius again.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"It's a well deserved win. We simply caught Cibona in their worst moment. After a loss to Efes Pilsen and a tough game in Malaga, we felt a bit disappointed in our hearts. We knew this game was so important, we had to win it to boost ourselves psychologically. Logically, we were really focused before and throughout the game. Stats doesn't even matter, only the final score. It tells everything. Today is the second birthday of my little son so personally I wanted to win it for him. He even didn't go to sleep at his usual time and was allowed to watch the game."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"We had the worst day here in Vilnius. We didn't rebound well in the first half, besides, we couldn't stop the Lietuvos Rytas fastbreaks. Of course, you have to have in mind that it's difficult for any team here in Vilnius. Besides, we had problems with playmakers because Tre Kelley couldn't play. Obviously, I don't feel good after such a loss but I think I'm prepared for this job."

Players

PRICE, HOLLIS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We had a great game tonight. We not only scored almost perfectly, but also defended very tough. I guess it's really hard to stop a team if it plays just like that great. Maybe we expected more from Cibona, but actually, I think they broke down psychologically after we started to play that good. And we started it in the first half, which is good. Yeah, I fell hard in the first quarter, but it hurt just a bit and I came back soon. It's nothing serious."
WARREN, CHRIS
Cibona
"They got it going right from the beginning and came out aggressive after two lost road games. So they came out with a lot of energy to which we didn't respond well. It was our fourth lost game away: we usually do much better at home. The problem is we still don't know what happens when we're not at home. We should try to stick to the same level in every game but for some reason, we're not playing good on the road. I really don't know what to say. Basically, we're a shooting team but Lietuvos Rytas played such tough defense tonight that we couldn't do anything. Their energy on defense killed us. That's what we need in our defense but we still don't have it. Lietuvos Rytas is definitely one of the toughest teams in our group. They have great balance, play hard and are definintely going to get to the Top 16 round."
