THE TAKE

Lottomatica Roma takes aim at the Euroleage’s only unbeaten team this season when it welcomes Panathinaikos to the Italian capital for a Group C clash on Thursday. Roma has had a hard-luck first half to the season, opening with three straight road games, losing three games by 6 or less and going just 1-6. However head coach Jasmin Repesa’s side has five of its remaining seven games at home and still has a chance at making a run for Top 16 qualification. Meanwhile the Greens have been in top form, though last week they needed a late charge to top Real Madrid. Head coach Zeljko Obradovic’s squad is arguably the deepest in club history, with at least two star caliber players at every spot. Rome nearly got the best of the defending champs on opening night, as Roko-Leni Ukic’s game-tying three-pointer was waived off for traveling in the final seconds, allowing Panathinaikos an 86-83 win. Roma is deepest in the backcourt, where David Hawkins, Jon Stefansson, Allan Ray and Jacopo Giachetti join Ukic in challenging the Greens’s guard rotation of Final Four MVP Dimitrios Diamantidis, former Final Four MVP Sarunas Jasikevicius, Vassilis Spanoulis Nikos Hatzvirettas and Sani Becirovic. Furthermore, the athletic Kennedy Winston could try and shake things up for Panathinaikos at small forward. The visitors boasts superior depth inside, with Mike Batiste leading the charge alongside Demos Dikoudis, Kostas Tsartsaris and Andrija Zizic, to name a few. Veteran Gregor Fucka, Erazem Lorbek and Alessandro Tonolli will all need to step up for Roma inside. This season Panathinaikos has become an offensive juggernaut, ranking second in the league in scoring and third in assists. Roma has also shaken its reputation as a defensive side, topping the 80-point barrier five times so far. Still defense could play a role in this game, as guys like Hawkins and Fucka will look to sabotage the Greens’ attack. If they are successful in keeping Panathinaikos’s scoring down, Roma, fueled by its home court and the must-win feel that comes with a 1-6 start, has the talent to trump the Greek champs and turn their own season around, in what will surely be a hotly contested game in Roma.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We still believe in the chance of reaching the Top 16, even if until now we obtained less than we expected in the previuos mathces. We still have some chances but we are aware that it's not easy. The European Champions are very strong, well trained and it's right they still haven't lost. But Rome wants to win and we will try to use our technical qualities but we must even be strong in mind. We have some problems as Drejer, Daniels and Tonolli will be out of the game and Gabini, Stefansson and Ukic are in doubt. But I know that everybody in the field will give their 110%. It is a real challenge for us and to win we need our supporters."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"Lottomatica Roma is a very good team that we do respect like all the other Euroleague teams. They had an excellent game in our home court on the opening night and I believe that their performance in Athens was their best in the Euroleague so far. They have many quality players and definitely we expect a difficult game. We have to be concentrated and face them with high seriousness trying to show balance defensively and offensively. Our team is in good shape, we continue to work hard in practices and we have to keep on fighting to fulfill our goals."

Players

GABINI, ROBERTO
Lottomatica Roma
"The only thing I know is that we must win. Math doesn't condemn us yet. We have to trust that until we can. In Athens we played a great match, we lost only at the end. We were aggressive and focused on defense and we stayed on balance until the end of the game. Panathinaikos is a great team. Players are all of high level. We have to try to stop their pick and roll and play on defense at our best. OK, they always won, but even Panathinaikos could lose. Why not here in Rome? We will need the help of our supporters, because, as I repeat, we don't surrender until math doesn't tell us to stop."
WINSTON, KENNEDY
Panathinaikos
"This game is totally different than the Euroleague opening game in Athens. I remember we won that battle almost at the end. It was awesome, since it was the first game of the season in front of our crowd. I also remember that crazy shooter Stefansson, who was nothing but net during the whole night. We know that Lottomatica Roma is not in perfect shape, but we do know that our opponents have extra motivation when they compete against the current Euroleague champs. There is no doubt that the game is expected to be really tough."
Allan Ray - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica Roma handed defending Euroleague champion Panathinaikos its first loss of the season, 85-67, in the Italian capital on Thursday night. The hosts went on a decisive 17-0 run at the start of the third quarter to take a 65-50 lead, which they never relinquished. The win saw Roma improve to 2-6 and keeps its hopes of reaching the Top 16 alive, while Panathinaikos still has a one-victory lead over Real Madrid atop the Group C standings. Allan Ray was outstanding for the hosts, striking often from long range on his way to a game-high 18 points. Roko-Leni Ukic added 13 points, Gregor Fucka 11 and Erazem Lorbek 10 for the winners. Roma shot 22 for 32 (68.8%) inside the arc, while Panathinaikos was 14 of 31 (45.2%). Sarunas Jasikevicius finished with a team-high 13 points for Panathinaikos and Mike Batiste added 10.

The way the visitors began the contest, everything looked as if it would go according to plan for them. Demos Dikoudis gave scored on a drive and then buried a three-pointer, but Roma hit right back with 7 straight points to claim the lead. Roberto Gabini connected from behind the arc and then Ray scored twice on drives to the basket. It was a first quarter of runs, with the Greens then scoring 9 straight points. Batiste twice scored down low on strong moves, and Panathinaikos appeared to grab the momentum when Jacopo Giachetti lost control of the ball and was hit with an unsportsmanlike foul on Jasikevicius, who made his 2 free throws. Saras then drilled a three-pointer for a 14-7 advantage. Trailing 18-11 after a dunk by Kennedy Winston, Roma battled back as Ray hit from behind the arc and David Hawkins came up with a steal and layup with two minutes to go in the quarter. Dikoudis put his powerful game on display, catching a pass at the free throw line and driving in for a one-handed jam. Fouled on the play, he made the free throw to take the lead back to 23-18, but Ukic spotted Lorbek down low and he scored right before the buzzer as Roma trailed 23-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Demos Dikoudis - PanathinaikosRay was sensational in the early going and his three-ball tied the game at the start of the second quarter. Vassilis Spanoulis and Ukic scored with layups for their respective sides and another Ray triple would give Roma a 28-26 lead. Sani Becirovic replied with a three-point play after getting bumped by Fucka, but Roma got wind in its sails after Kostas Tsartsaris was called for an unsportsmanlike foul for wrapping his arm around Jon Stefansson as the Icelandic star was going in for a layup. Stefansson made both free throws and then struck with a three-pointer for a 37-31 lead. Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic called a timeout and when play resumed, Becirovic immediately hit a three-pointer to spark a 0-7 run. There would soon be a flurry of threes from both sides. Another Becirovic three gave the Greens a 41-38 lead, and not long after a Giachetti hit from long range to give Roma a 45-43 edge. Tsartsaris connected from the left corner to make it 46-45, but Fucka pulled up and nailed a long one. In the final minute, Roma increased its defensive pressure, but Andrija Zizic scored in traffic aa the game went to halftime knotted at 48-48.

The second half started well for Panathinaikos, with Batiste going up strong for a 50-48 lead, but Roma then hit the visitors with a 17-0 run. After field goals from Hawkins and Giachetti, Fucka scored 6 straight points on moves down low, the last after grabbing an offensive rebound off a miss by Ray. The run continued with Giachetti hitting a three before Hawkins capped it with another basket after a steal by Lorbek. As he always does, Jasikevicius gave his team hope. He made a pair of three-pointers to stop the rot, but an Ukic layup gave the hosts a 68-57 lead heading to the last quarter.

Roberto Gabini scored and Ray added another three-pointer to start the fourth as Roma went back in front by 16. The Greens looked vulnerable and Obradovic called a timeout. Roma missed on its next possession, but chased down the loose ball in the backcourt and rushed it back up the floor where Ray hit a baseline jumper. Zizic scored to end the 7-0 run and Dimitrios Diamantidis added a three, but Gabini answered with a finger roll. Spanoulis nailed a three from the left corner to make it 77-65, but Ukic drove untouched through the lane and restored the 14-point lead. An unsportsmanlike foul on Gabini when Becirovic flopped over after failing to take the ball away from Gabini led to 2 made free throws by Nikos Hatzivrettas, but Panathinaikos wasn’t able to make any inroads into the deficit and the last of the unbeatens fell to a surprise defeat.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"I have to compliment my team. They gave their heart and soul tonight. Teamwork was the key to our win. At the start of the game, we struggled with the pick-and-roll, but we managed to resolve that problem. We resolved our pick-and-roll. This is a merited victory, but now we must think about the future. I'm saddened that there weren't that many fans at the arena tonight, this team deserves much more supporters."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was our worst second-half performance this season. We made too many mistakes. We lost our concentration when it mattered. We must make sure we analyze this game, to see where we went wrong, learn from our mistakes and make sure we don't do this again."

Players

RAY, ALLAN
Lottomatica Roma
"It's a great feeling to beat the defending Euroleague champions. We executed our game really well, on offense and defense. We knew that if we wanted to still have a chance to play in the Top 16 we needed to win this game. We played great tonight. The whole team believed it was possible to beat Panathinaikos. I think this win will give us a boost in confidence for our next games."
DIKOUDIS, DIMOS
Panathinaikos
"It was our worst game of the season. We were not ourselves tonight and Roma was the better team. Roma played as we expected, but the problem was our game and if we play as we did tonight you lose. We will watch this game, learn from our mistakes and improve. I don't think this defeat will affect us even though it is our first slip in the Euroleague."
