The Take

Efes has a 5-5 record at Mediolanum Forum, where it lifted the Korac Cup trophy in 1996. Efes ranks third in scoring (87 ppg.), is first in assists (20.8 apg.) and three-point shots made (11.7 per game, with a league-best 47.6%) this season. Efes, however, is last in free throw shooting percentage (63.1%). Milan is last in two-point shooting percentage (44.2%) and 22nd in three-point accuracy (31.6%), so better shot selection will be needed to turn its situation around. Alessandro Gentile (20 ppg.) is the Euroleague's top scorer, but without Milan Macvan, Milan needs Stanko Barac and Jamel McLean to step up in the paint against two very good defenders, Bryant Dunston and Alex Tyus. Efes has an advantage at power forward with top talents like Dario Daric and Derrick Brown, so Robbie Hummel and McLean must live up to that challenge at both ends. Jayson Granger is doubtful, so Thomas Heurtel will see extended playing time at point guard and Dogus Balbay must also be ready to slow Andrea Cinciarini and Oliver Lafayette. Krunoslav Simon may be the X-factor for Milan, but Efes expects another good shooting night for Jon Diebler, who has been deadly from downtown (56.4% 3GH, hitting 3.67 per game) until now. Playing at the right rhythm will be critical for both teams.

Game Notes

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan

Alessandro Gentile is the top scorer in the Euroleague with an average of 20 points through five games.

Gentile has scored in double figures in 16 straight Euroleague appearances.

Charles Jenkins has made at least 1 three-pointer in six straight and 11 of his last 12 Euroleague games.

Stanko Barac played three seasons for Anadolu Efes between 2011 and 2014. He was a teammate there of current Efes players Dogus Balbay, Birkan Batuk, Cedi Osman and Emircan Kosut.

Oliver Lafayette signed with Anadolu Efes in January 2012 and finished the season there. Only Dogus Balbay remains from Lafayette’s time there.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul

Efes defeated Olimpia Milano in the two-game 1996 Korac Cup finals to win its first and only continental title on the strength of Petar Naumoski and Conrad McRae.

Jon Diebler leads the league in three-pointers made through six games this season with 22; he has made multiple three-pointers in every game this season.

Jayson Granger has made at least 1 three-pointer in eight straight Euroleague games.

Dario Saric was a teammate of Milan guard Krunoslav Simon during the 2011-12 season at KK Zagreb. They have also played together on the Croatian national team over the past three summers. Milan guard Oliver Lafayette was with them too at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Derrick Brown was a teammate of Simon’s at Lokomotiv Kuban during the previous two seasons.

Bryant Dunston tied his Euroleague career high with 4 blocked shots against Milan in a March 2014 Top 16 game.

Cedi Osman set his Euroleague career high in rebounding with 8 in a Top 16 clash against Milan last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"We prepared the game like all the other games but we know this is definitely more important. We play against a strong team, they play well but we need to win and there's only way to achieve our goal. This is to play hard all together."
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It is an honor for us to play the Game of The Week in Euroleague for the second time this season. It is a big challenge for everybody in Anadolu Efes. We absolutely know that EA7 Milan is a very good team. For such a good and talented team five losses in a row is not logical for me. We have to stop their leader Gentile on one on one games. We also have to stop them on offensive transition games by which they scored 25 points in the game played in Istanbul between our two teams. Every game on the road needs good game control, good game reading and good selection of sets. Both teams in Euroleague have lots of injury problems. I hope Jayson Granger will be able to help the team for this important game. Ahmet Duverioglu is not ready due to injury and will not be on the roster for this game."

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"To regret the past and our shortcomings would be pointless now. The only goal is to win this game and move on, stay focus and win one to stay alive. We need to play hard and fight through the end."
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"In Euroleague every game is important. We have to be ready for this game especially defensively. We respect EA7 Milan, regardless their situation in the group. They really are a very good team. We have high goals as the team. We have to be very well prepared for Thursday’s game."

EA7 Milan defends home, ends losing streak

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan snapped a five-game losing streak without its captain by defeating Anadolu Efes Istanbul 88-84 at home to keep its Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 hopes alive. Jamel McLean collected 26 points while Krunoslav Simon had 17, 5 rebounds and 6 assists as Milan was playing without the league's leading scorer, injured Alessandro Gentile. Oliver Lafayette added 15 points and Stanko Barac chipped in 12 as Milan improved to 2-5 in Group B. Anadolu Efes suffered its fourth loss in the last five games to drop to 3-4 in the group. Birkan Batuk paced Efes with 17 points while Dario Saric scored 15. Jon Diebler had 13 more on 4 three-pointers and Bryant Dunston collected 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists before fouling out. Efes playmaker Thomas Heurtel did not finish the game as he got injured after picking up 12 points and 9 assists.

First quarter: Cinciarini helps Milan get off to good start

Milan coach Jasmin Repesa replaced Gentile in the starting five with Simon alongside Andrea Cinciarini, Charles Jenkins, McLean and Barac. Andadolu Efes coach Dusan Ivkovic made two changes to his starting line-up with Furkan Korkmaz playing for Batuk and Saric coming on for Derrick Brown. The other three starters were Heurtel, Diebler and Dunston. McLean started the scoring for the hosts with 2 free throws. Dunston converted a pass from Heurtel for Efes's first basket at 2-2. Simon stepped up with an assist on a basket by Barac and a three-pointer for a 7-2 advantage. After Diebler nailed his first three-pointer, Cinciarini scored the next 4 points to push the Milan lead to 11-5. Korkmaz answered with a three-pointer and Heurtel's score got Efes closer, 11-10. Cinciarini scored again but the guests knotted the game 14-14 after jumpers from Saric and Heurtel. Simon knocked down a three-pointer to re-establish a three-point lead before a Brown layup and Diebler triplefrom the right corner gave Efes its first lead at 17-19. Simon's free throws started a 6-0 Milan run which also had Robbie Hummel and Jenkins score on layups for a 23-19 advantage. It was 23-21 after 10 minutes following Batuk's foul shots.

Second quarter: Efes erase 17-point deficit with 3-22 run

McLean started the second quarter with a tip-in and then hit a tough layup for a three-point play. Lafayette followed with a three-pointer from the right wing and McLean converted another three-point play as Milan scored the first 13 points of the quarter. Alex Tyus finally got Efes on the board with a free throw but McLean knocked down a jumper and Lafayette nailed another long ball as the lead grew to 17 points, 39-22. Heurtel's jumper with 6:20 minutes left was the guests' first basket of the quarter. Lafayette's floater made it 41-24, but Heurtel's next basket - a trey from the left wing - started a frantic Efes comeback. Huertel drained another three-pointer and Diebler followed with a three-ball of his own as the deficit was quickly down to 43-35. After Milan missed a three-pointer, Saric got out on the break and threw down a dunk before adding 2 free throws as Efes was to within 43-39. Lafayette's free throw snapped a 3:45 minute scoreless stretch for Milan and Dunston sandwiched 2 free throws and a basket around Batuk's right corner three-pointer as Efes led 44-46 at intermission. The guests out-scored Milan 3-22 in the final 5 minutes of the half.

Third quarter: McLean, Simon keep Milan ahead despite Efes three-pointers

Bruno Cerella’s steal and layup started the second half to even the game but Batuk buried a three-pointer to give Efes a new lead, 46-49. Barac got a hook shot to fall and Simon knotted the game with a reverse layup and bonus free throw to make it 51-51. Simon and McLean continued to dominate for Milan as the guard found Barac for a layup and McLean made 2 foul shots. But Batuk nailed 2 three-pointers to keep Efes ahead and Jayson Granger's free throws made the guests up 55-59. Simon free throws trimmed the deficit but Saric hit a three-ball from the right wing and the Efes cushion was 57-62. However, McLean converted a three-point play and then hit a layup on the break to even the score at 62-62. Granger answered with a three-ball before a Barac sank a hook and Simon fed Lafayette for a layup as Milan was ahead 66-65 after 30 minutes.

Fourth quarter: McLean takes over game

Barac's turnaround fadeaway to start the fourth was followed by Jenkins driving for a layup and Simon scoring along the baseline for a 72-65 Milan lead. Diebler responded by somehow hitting a three-pointer on the left side and converted the bonus free throw for a four-point play. Then, 3 free throws by Batuk had Efes again knocking at the door, 74-72. Lafayette knocked down a jumper but Granger answered that and Dunston somehow scored as he was falling down: the game was now even at 76-76. McLean began taking overwith some fancy footwork and scored as well on an inside basket and a big dunk off a pass from Lafayette for an 84-81 lead. Lafayette followed with 2 important foul shots for a five-point lead with 1:14 left. Granger scored for Efes to trim it to 86-83 with 29 seconds left but Efes could not take advantage of both Cinciarini and Hummel splitting their foul shots for an 88-83 lead as the hosts got a victory that kept them alive to fight another day.

Head Coaches

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"We really played a good game expect for the last five minutes of the first half. Congratulations to my players, because we believed for 40 minuts. Congratulations to our fans, who came here in a big number to help us and support us while we are still alive in the competition. Honestly, we don't have a big chance to qualify but we believe in ourselves and will play until the end."
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"The Game of the Week was an exciting, tough one. I think that Milan had a higher desire and was willing to fight more and deserved this win. In the second quarter we were down by 17 and managed to reach hafltime up by 2. It means that my team cannot play so up and down during the game. Our defense is not what we expected - we allowed 88 points, which was too much. McLean scored 9 of 10 shots and Barac hit 6 of 9, probably their best game of the season. We made some stupid fouls which were a matter of concentration and little mistakes did not allow us to win the game. I told my players that if Milan played without their best player (Gentile), don't let ourselves be without pressure, relaxed and without playing defense, which is what happened. I have experience and coaches many, many games but it was impossible to win this one."

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"Like I said at halftime, we just had to trust in ourselves and get out rotation good. We rotated well towards the end and with only three big guys, it is really hard. It was just Stanko (Barac), me and Robbie (Hummel), and then our guards play phenomenal. I can't say we did too good on defense, they scored 84 points, but we also scored the ball. It is just a good win that gives us a little breath. We have to go to Greece next week, try to get a win and try to get to the next round."
