THE STAKES

Avery experienced Ukrainian squad and the former ULEB Cup champions from Israel meet for the first time in this Group A showdown. The coaches of the two teams – Sasa Obradovic for Donetsk and Oded Katash for Jerusalem – are former point guards who will add an interesting strategic dimension to the game. It’s a special night for Ramel Curry, who played with Hapoel during the 2007-08 season, and averaged 8.8 points per game in 12 Eurocup games.

THE TAKE

The game features a face-to-face battle of scoring aces: DeMarcus Nelson, a versatile swingman, and Luke Jackson, an outstanding shooter making his debut in the competition. The point guard matchup between the more experienced Vule Avdalvovic against the young and talented Naimy Yuval will also be crucial. There is also an interesting contrast between big men: Donetsk’s Ivan Radenovic and Michael Lee are mobile and can play outside the paint, while Hapoel’s Johns Thomas and Jarvis Varnado have more size and solidity.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"There are no favorites in the opening game. The most important thing in such games is psychology. The winner will be the team that is mentally prepared for it. We had enough time to prepare the game, we had enough videos. I think if my players follow the game plan we laid out, we will win. I’m glad that Ivan Radenovic, who didn’t take part in the last game against Azovmash because of the illness, is ready to play. He already had two practices with the main group. At the same time the club decided to terminate the contract with DeMarcus Nelson because we want to give a chance to Oleksandr Lypovyy who is one of the most talented Ukrainian players."
KATTASH, ODED
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We are all very excited to start, the Eurocup is a great and tough competition. The first game is always a hard task for everybody to adapt to the new competition. Donetsk is a very good team, talented players with great skills for sure. Although the game is on the road and we knoe their gym will be a tough place to win in, we are here believing in our strength and talent. We wil do our best."

"We have been working hard to get ready for the start of the Eurocup season. Coach gave us all the necessary information about Hapoel Jerusalem. We know their strengths and their weaknesses and we analyzed all their systems. If tomorrow we manage to build up our game on defense, we will be ready to beat Hapoel."
KOKIA, URI
Hapoel Jerusalem
"This is my third year in the Eurocup and I know how hard it is to win the road games. We are playing a tough opponent in Donetsk, but we are all focused and we are here with the goal of the win in our minds."
Vule Avdalovic - BC Donetsk (photo Olexiy Naumov)BC Donetsk started the Eurocup season in style by beating Hapoel Jerusalem 80-71 in their Group A contest. Dmytro Gliebov scored 15, Vule Avdalovic 14 and Michael Lee grabbed 13 rebounds to help lead the winners. The game was tied at 43-43 midway through the third quarter, but Gliebov and Avdalovic heated up and put the game away. Donetsk was strong underneath – it outrebounded Hapoel 46-35 and got 5 blocked shots from Viacheslav Kravtsov – and benefitted from Jerusalem’s awful outside shooting (3 of 16 for three-points; 18.8%). Ramel Curry added 11 for the winners. D.J. Strawberry paced Jerusalem with 22 points and Yuval Naimy scored 17.

Darryl Strawberry - Hapoel Jerusalem (photo Olexiy Naumov)After a scoreless opening minute during which Kravtsov missed twice from the line, Curry found Kravtsov inside for a slam. Strawberry scored and assisted to Brian Randle to keep things even. The teams traded baskets and Hapoel grabbed its first lead at 11-13 on a Naimy three-pointer. The seesaw battle continued as Curry and Strawberry swapped triples until Darnell Jackson’s tip-in at the buzzer made it 23-20 after 10 minutes. Ivan Radenovic free throws, an Oleksandr Lypovyy layup and a Jacskon free throw gave Donetsk an 8-point cushion early in the second quarter, but Strawberry and co. responded with 8 straight points to even the score at 28-28. But a Avdalovic triple put the hosts ahead and 6 points by Maksym Pustozvonov in the last minutes of the half left Donetsk with a 40-34 halftime advantage.

A pair of baskets-plus-foul converted by Strawberry and Luke Jackson brough Hapoel within 41-40 early in the third quarter. A third three-point play by Naimy evened the score at 43-43. Gliebov connected from downtown to keep the hosts ahead. Avdalovic also got involved to help extend to lead to 54-47. Strawberry kept scoring the ball, but was no match for Avdalovic, who stretched the lead to 10 before settling for 63-54 heading into the fourth quarter. Gliebov saw Donetsk’s lead rise to 70-59 midway through the fourth quarter. Jerusalem tried to battle back through Strawberry and Guny Izraely and managed to trim the deficit to 5. However Kravtsov free throws and a Michael Lee basket on the offensive glass kept the hosts in control en route to the season-opening win.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"First of all I want to congratulate my team. It's very important to start the Eurocup season with a win. Today we did a good job on defense and it was the key for success. Still we must to work on our offense, because sometimes we are not making good decisions."
KATTASH, ODED
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We knew that Donetsk would try to play aggressive defense. The main thing in the Donetsk win was its domination in the paint. They have won by fighting on the boards. It's impossible to win when your team shoots 19% from the three-point line and makes just 57% of free throws attempts. "
