EA7 Emporio Armani Milan continues its battle to lock up a Top 16 berth when it hosts Group C co-leader Zalgiris Kaunas in the fashion capital on Friday. Armani has the benefit of playing the last of Group C’s three Game 9 fixtures and will know by tip-off if a win will be enough to secure a spot in the next stage this week. After starting the season 2-0, Milan has dropped five of six and will try to turn things around at home. The Lithuanian champs surely won’t be letting up; Zalgiris hopes to win Group C and can do so Friday if Olympiacos loses in Zagreb on Thursday. Milan big man Ioannis Bourousis has been tough to stop this season, despite his role being limited thanks to a series of injuries. However Bourousis, who comes off back-to-back double-doubles, had his worst game of the season in the loss at Zalgiris last month. Zalgiris won that game 92-87 after trailing early in part due to excellent backcourt play from the duo of Oliver Lafayette and Ibby Jaaber, who were able to match the output of Armani’s top scorer, Keith Langford. In addition to Lafayette and Jaaber, Coach Joan Plaza will throw out Marko Popovic and Rimas Kaukenas as he looks to wear down Langford and point guard Omar Cook. Zalgiris is deep inside too, where the Lavrinovic twins, Darjus and Ksistof, team with Paulius Jankunas to stop Bourousis. The keys for Milan could be at forward, where natural mismatch Antonis Fotsis could create more space for Bourousis by knocking down jumpers and small forward Malik Hairston’s versatile skills could make the difference. One thing for certain is that this game should feature plenty of offense and excitement with guards from both teams pushing the pace. And I want to congratulate my players because we're working and fighting to improve every day. We won four times on the road and the only loss was after double overtime in Zagreb. This shows we have changed our mentality, which is very important. From the first day, we've been atop this group and we're dominating it. This is probably the strongest group in the Euroleague, and if we win the next game we'll finish first. It was a really tough game. They tried to survive. We won three of the four quarters, and we deserved to win the game even though we struggled. But it was very important to us to change our mentality, especially on the road.
