THE STAKES

The aristocracy of the competition face off in Novo Mesto. Krka, the 2003 runner-up, returned to the Eurocup in 2011 by winning the Eurochallenge, while Lietuvos Rytas, which failed to survive the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, won the Eurocup in 2005 and 2009, and was 2007 runner-up. The teams are coached by Nenad Trajkovic, for Krka Novo Mesto, and Aleksandar Dzikic, for Lietuvos Rytas. For Dzikic this game will be special as he had coached Novo Mesto during the last two seasons, twice winning the Slovenian national championship as well as the Eurochallenge.

THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas is an extremely strong team in the paint, with Lawrence Roberts, Jonas Valanciunas and Predrag Samardzski all boasting size and offensive talent. The defensive efforts against them by Jure Blazic, Jerome Jordan and Smilijan Pavic for Krka will be crucial to the outcome. Curtis Stinson against Tyrese Rice is another must-see matchup. Each team has a big plus that could be decisive: Krka’s teamwork and Rytas’s deep bench.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRAJKOVIC, NENAD
KRKA Novo Mesto
"We are going into a hard week for us with two big games. It's a shame that we lost to Union Olimpija in the Adriatic League, because with that win we would be much more self-confident now. My assistants already did some scouting of Lietuvos Rytas and we will have a tough job preparing this game. We know that they have some excellent players. Unfortunately, we are still without injured Curtis Stinson, who is undergoing surgery in the United States."
DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"Krka is different from last year because they have a new coach and added several new players. The Novo Mesto club is very strong, although they lost two straight games. First, we must control our rival energy. Krka is a very energic team, so it will be very important to deal with it. If not, we will have problems. The opponents are playing very fast, aggressive. Young and experienced players are often a mixture that gives a positive result. In addition, four or five players have been on the same team playing together for 5 years and it is an advantage over other teams."

Players

MURIC, EDO
KRKA Novo Mesto
"Lietuvos Rytas is a great team. They played in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds and only lost in the end of the final game against Galatasaray. They have some very good players, both young and experienced, and of course, a great coach. We all know Aleksandar Dzikic very well. He was our teacher and he knows us as well. We will all be very motivated to play against him."
SEIBUTIS, RENALDAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"The morale level is high on our team, everything seems good so far. We do not know Krka very much but we know they are a strong, capable team. Even though they have lost a few games lately, they didn't play bad in those so we cannot underestimate our opponents. We are facing a strong rival and it will be a difficult game for us, so we must stay focused for the 40 minutes."
Tyrese Rice - Lietuvos Rytas (photo bc.lrytas)_34136Lietuvos Rytas celebrated its Eurocup return with an impressive come-from-behind 65-73 road win at Krka Novo Mesto on Tuesday. Down 6 entering the fourth quarter, Tyrese Rice keyed a 0-14 blitz that put Rytas in charge en route to the win. Rice finished with 19 points and 4 assists in his competiton debut. Mindaugas Katelynas added a very efficient 15 points and Renaldas Seibutis netted 12 for the winners. Jerome Jordan scored 20 and grabbed 8 rebounds and new signing Allan Ray debuted with 14 points for Krka, which finished the game without a three-pointer despite 5 tries.

Rytas jumped ahead early as Lawrence Roberts and Arturas Jomantas connected from downtown on the team’s first two possessions. Marko Djurkovic scored on the offensive glass to cut the gap to 5-6. Four straight points from Smiljan Pavic gave Krka its first lead, 9-8. The score remained tight with the teams trading scores until Jure Balazic’s free throw made it 21-18 at the end of the first quarter. The theme continued into the second quarter when Katelynas twice brought Rytas within 1. Jordan and Zoran Dragic pumped the lead up to 28-22, but Seibutis led Rytas to tie things up and then Katelynas capped a 1-10 spurt with a pretty move to make it 29-32. Krka scored the next 8 points – all on free throws – to go back on top. Predrag Samardziski cut the lead to 2 before Jordan gave the hosts a 39-35 halftime cushion.

Dragic padded the lead to start the second half, but Rtyas refused to quit as Katelynas drilled a triple. Rice and Aleksandar Rasic further cut away at the Krka lead before Seibutis evened things at 45-45. Jordan, Pavic and Dragic all scored to put Novo Mesto back ahead by 6. And Allen kept it that way with a jumper for 59-53 heading into the fourth quarter. Rice took over the Rytas offense in the fourth quarter and scored 7 points on the team’s first three possessions to get within 61-60. Jomantas scored the go-ahead bucket, Seibutis followed and Rice nailed a three. When the dust settled, Rytas had reeled off 14 straight points to take a 61-69 lead. Allan made it a 4-point game Rice free throws paired with 2 Krka turnovers in the final minute allowed the visitors to celebrate their return to the Eurocup with a victory.

Head Coaches

TRAJKOVIC, NENAD
KRKA Novo Mesto
"I congratulate my colleague Dzikic for the win. Like in games before, we again played more than 30 minutes quite well but we could not win the game. We played good in defense until final minutes. We also lost concentration in offense and we didn’t have options against their zone. Baxter could have been the option but he injured his thumb in the first half."
DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"I would like to congratulate Krka. They made this match very hard for us and we had to show everything that we knew. They prepared real well for the game but I expected that. Krka has a very good coach, he made me what I am today. I should not be satisfied with how we played, but I’m surely satisfied with the score."

Players

PAVIC, SMILJAN
KRKA Novo Mesto
"We played good three quarters but after that we lost concentration and power. We had 22 turnovers and that is too many if you want to beat any team. We should try to improve that as soon is possible.”
