THE TAKE

Two top names in Euroleague history will meet for the first time in more than two decades on Thursday when Real Madrid hosts Lottomatica Roma in a Group C clash. Madrid started hot and finished cold last week in a 72-80 victory over Fenerbahce Ulker. Despite the win, the team lost star guard Louis Bullock, who left with a leg injury in the first period and did not return. He is out this week. Roma displayed a heroic effort and led big at times on the road at Euroleague champion Panathinaikos. The game went to the wire and Roko-Leni Ukic seemed to have tied the game with a big three in the last second, but it was waived off for traveling and head coach Jasmin Repesa's men left with a tough 86-83 defeat. Things won't be any easier for Roma this week as it travels to the Spanish capital and host city of the 2008 Final Four. But if the men from Roma want to attend that event as more than spectators, they'll need to win on the road and there's no time like the present. Roma proved to be a solid side on both sides of the floor last week, with Jon Stefansson and big man Erazem Lorbek shining for 25 and 18 points, respectively, while Ukic dished a career-best 8 assists. Meanwhile it is tough to conclude too much from Madrid's win, simply because the visitors led by 20 after 10 minutes and were able to coast through the middle periods before holding off Fenerbahce's late run. What can be seen is the tremendous shooting potential that this team brings after Charles Smith and Axel Hervelle combined to go 10 for 13 from downtown. Without Bullock, someone will get more minutes in the backcourt, and Madrid has plenty of candidates: Smith, Raul Lopez, Kerem Tunceri and Michalis Pelekanos. Ukic teams with Stefansson, David Hawkins, Allan Ray and Jacopo Giacheti to form a deep backcourt for Roma, too. Inside, Lorbek and Roberto Gabini get help from Gregor Fucka, while Christian Drejer can impact the game from either forward spot. Star center Lazaros Papadopoulos anchors the the Madrid frontline, with Blagot Sekulic and Hervelle helping out. Felipe Reyes is still sidelines with a back injury, while Venson Hamilton is doubtful to contribute much due to nagging injuries. One important matchup to keep an eye on is at center, where Roma may want to use the experience and long arms of Fucka to try and stop Papadopoulos. Madrid survived a thriller to improve to 2-0 and tie with Panathinaikos and Partizan Igokea for the first place in Group C. Meanwhile, Lottomatica dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to get back into the Top 16 race. Charles Smith led the winners with 23 points. Alex Mumbru added 17, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Raul Lopez each had 11 while Axel Hervelle barely missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds for Madrid. Erazem Lorbek led Lottomatica with 24 points on 8-of-11 two-pointers and 2-of-2 from downtown.
