THE TAKE

Two top names in Euroleague history will meet for the first time in more than two decades on Thursday when Real Madrid hosts Lottomatica Roma in a Group C clash. Madrid started hot and finished cold last week in a 72-80 victory over Fenerbahce Ulker. Despite the win, the team lost star guard Louis Bullock, who left with a leg injury in the first period and did not return. He is out this week. Roma displayed a heroic effort and led big at times on the road at Euroleague champion Panathinaikos. The game went to the wire and Roko-Leni Ukic seemed to have tied the game with a big three in the last second, but it was waived off for traveling and head coach Jasmin Repesa's men left with a tough 86-83 defeat. Things won't be any easier for Roma this week as it travels to the Spanish capital and host city of the 2008 Final Four. But if the men from Roma want to attend that event as more than spectators, they'll need to win on the road and there's no time like the present. Roma proved to be a solid side on both sides of the floor last week, with Jon Stefansson and big man Erazem Lorbek shining for 25 and 18 points, respectively, while Ukic dished a career-best 8 assists. Meanwhile it is tough to conclude too much from Madrid's win, simply because the visitors led by 20 after 10 minutes and were able to coast through the middle periods before holding off Fenerbahce's late run. What can be seen is the tremendous shooting potential that this team brings after Charles Smith and Axel Hervelle combined to go 10 for 13 from downtown. Without Bullock, someone will get more minutes in the backcourt, and Madrid has plenty of candidates: Smith, Raul Lopez, Kerem Tunceri and Michalis Pelekanos. Ukic teams with Stefansson, David Hawkins, Allan Ray and Jacopo Giacheti to form a deep backcourt for Roma, too. Inside, Lorbek and Roberto Gabini get help from Gregor Fucka, while Christian Drejer can impact the game from either forward spot. Star center Lazaros Papadopoulos anchors the the Madrid frontline, with Blagot Sekulic and Hervelle helping out. Felipe Reyes is still sidelines with a back injury, while Venson Hamilton is doubtful to contribute much due to nagging injuries. One important matchup to keep an eye on is at center, where Roma may want to use the experience and long arms of Fucka to try and stop Papadopoulos. If Roma can't find the right man to slow down Papadopoulos, it could be a tough night for the visitors. On the other hand, Roma's plethora of scorers on the wings could be tough for Madrid to match up with, especially with Bullock sidelined. The ability of the Roma guards to generate points will be important to that team's chances.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"This is a very important game for us, because we want to validate the victory we got in Istanbul with another in our arena; if we lose, what we did the first week will have been wasted. We know it will be a tough game, because Lottomatica Roma is an experienced team, with good players, many of them with experience in the ACB, which means they'll know our game and our style of basketball. For this game, our first at home in the new Euroleague season, the help of our fans will be really important. In this competition, as in the ACB, if you want to make it far, you have to be strong at home. The only way we'll have to achieve victory against such a tough rival is to come out ready for a tough game, concentrate all 40 minutes and give 100 percent of ourselves, considering that we won't have Reyes or Bullock. Venson Hamilton isn't close to 100 percent, either, because after every injury he gets over, another crops up."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We have just lost against Solsonica Rieti at home (76-86, first match lost at home) and we have some problems. The match in Madrid will be very hard for us. Real plays a very good basketball and is in good condition. All matches are difficult and, even if two important players such as Erik Daniels and Simone Bagnoli are not at our disposal, we'll play to win. We aren't in the best condition, and we respect Real Madrid, but we have to win. We have to play and to fight for 40 minutes - not a second less - to have a chance to win."

MUMBRU, ALEX
Real Madrid
"It's our first Euroleague home game this season, and we are really excited about that. We know that to get a second victory in just our second game would be important and would give us a lot of confidence at a time when we can't count on our entire roster due to injuries. We'll be facing a tough game playing its second road game in the group, and I'm sure they will give everything to get their first victory in our arena, Vistalegre. We know they have talent enough to win on any court if they have a good day, something they almost achieved in opening week against Panathinaikos in Athens, which shows the potential of Lottomatica Roma."

Charles Smith - Real Madrid Real Madrid joined a three-way tie atop the Group C standings by downing Lottomatica Roma 89-83 in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Madrid survived a thriller to improve to 2-0 and tie with Panathinaikos and Partizan Igokea for the first place in Group C. Meanwhile, Lottomatica dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to get back into the Top 16 race. Charles Smith led the winners with 23 points. Alex Mumbru added 17, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Raul Lopez each had 11 while Axel Hervelle barely missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds for Madrid. Roko Ukic added 19 while Jon Stefansson had 14 for the guests, that trailed 25-10 late in the first quarter. Lorbel and Ukic led the Roma comeback, as the guests managed to get a 55-57 edge and tied the game, 81-81, with under 2 minutes to go. Lopez hit a key triple and soon added free throws that sealed the outcome down the stretch.Real Madrid legends Emiliano Rodriguez and Pedro Ferrandiz were honoured by their club in a brief pre-game ceremony. Ukic fed Roberto Gabini for a corner three-pointer but Papadopoulos scored inside and Smith dunked it for a 12-5 Madrid lead. Ukic tried to change things with an easy layup but Smith stroke twice from downtown to boost Madrid's lead to 18-7. An unstoppable Ukic joined the three-point shootout but Smith - who else? - and Mumbru allowed the hosts to make it a 15-point game, 25-10. Stefansson stepped up with a driving layup that Smith erased with free throws. A corner triple by David Hawkins and a fallaway jumper by Ukic brought Lottomatica within 29-17 after 10 minutes.

Roberto Gabini - Lottomatica RomaSergi Llull stepped on court and managed to shut down Ukic while sharing the point guard duties with Kerem Tunceri. Lorbek tried to ignit the Lottomatica comeback with a layup but Llull bettered that with a three-point play. Hawkins stepped up with a layup-plus-foul while Lorbek added a layup to give Lottomatica some hope at 33-24. Roma switched to a 2-3 zone defense, while back-to-back layups by Lorbek ignited a 0-8 run in which a floating jumper by Jiacopo Giachetti got the guests within 35-32. Mumbru stepped up with a tip-in, as Madrid improved its defense. Lopez beat the shot clock buzzer with a triple from the top of the key but Hawkins answered from downtown to keep Roma close. Gregor Fucka and Giachetti added back-to-back layups and even when Lopez stroke from downtown, Lorbek beat the buzzer with another triple to get Roma within 45-42 at halftime.

Both teams struggled to score early in the second half, Hervelle was the only one to score for 2 minutes, giving Madrid a 47-42 edge. Madrid found a go-to guy in Reyes, who followed a put-back layup with an acrobatic basket to extend the hosts' lead to 51-44. Mumbru scored off an inbound steal by Lopez but Ukic took over with a triple to keep Lottomatica close, 53-47. Lorbek stayed unstoppable down low and soon hit a one from downtown for a 53-52 Roma deficit. Mumbru made free throws but a corner triple by Stefansson and a driving layup by Giachetti completed the Lottomatica comeback, 55-57. Mumbru hit more foul shots and Papadopoulos added a left-handed jump hook to make Lottomatica call timeout at 59-57. Smith banked in a shot but another triple by Stefansson tied the game again, 62-62. Smith scored twice coming off the baseline to give Madrid a 66-64 edge after 30 minutes.

Alex Mumbru - Real MadridPapadopoulos scored Fucka eraly in the fourth quarter while Smith added a power layup to give Madrid some fresh air at 70-64. Madrid kept its momentum going, as Tunceri buried a three-pointer and even Stefansson answered with a long two-pointer, Smith nailed another bomb from downtown to make the hosts restore a double-digit lead, 76-66, with 7 minutes to go. Ukic tried to get Roma back in the game with a three-pointer, but Papadopoulos fed Hervelle for a reverse dunk. Lorbek stepped up with a tip-in while Fucka and Ukic took over with consecutive layups to get Roma within 78-75. Mumbru fired in a three-pointer but free throws by Stefansson and Lorbek got Roma even closer, 81-79, with 2 minutes remaining. Papadopoulos picked up an offensive foul while Ukic's driving layup tied it at 81-81. Lopez nailed a key triple, Hawkins missed in the other end while Reyes made a foul shot for a 85-81 Madrid edge with 31.1 seconds to go. Ukic committed a turnover while Tunceri sealed the outcome with more free throws, allowing Madrid to stay unbeaten in the competition.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Lottomatica Roma isnot a very conventional team, as it has can with all five players outside the zone. The fact that we have big man that play inside, added to that fact, caused us some problems during the game. I am happy because we were able to overcome their pressure and that Lottomatica did not manage to get a considerable lead at any time. We won out second consecutive game and that give us some extra energy to keep working hard."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"My team played a good game, and it's a shame we didn't win. Real Madrid got a big lead, we tried to cut it back with some defensive changes and some more intensity, and we got to the end with a chance to win. Again, little mistakes kept us from completing our mission. That's our second loss in a row away from home by a few points against very strong teams. We'll just have to keep working until we win one."

Players

TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"We had it tough when Lottomatica switched to zone defense in the second quarter. It was not our best game but we keep improving. It is important to win at home and improve to 2-0 in the standings. We cannot allow to have a 15-point lead and see it disappear in our own court."
LOPEZ, RAUL
Real Madrid
"Lottomatica Roma was a very tough opponent, we knew it wouldn't be an easy game even when people could thought so. They only lost by three points against Panathinaikos in Athens. It was tough for us to lose our first-quarter lead and we struggled against their zone defense, but we managed to play well down the stretch and win the game."
UKIC, ROKO
Lottomatica Roma
"We lost again by a narrow margin, just like in Athens. We have to go one step higher, from playing well to actually win games. We managed to rally from a 15-point deficit with our zone defense, but we did not manage to step up in the final minutes. Raul Lopez hit a couple of critical shots, so we go back to Rome knowing that we could have won this game."
