THE TAKE

Lottomatica Roma will look to bounce back from its second loss of the season last week when it hosts Union Olimpija on Thursday in the Italian capital. Roma enters the week tied with Tau Ceramica for first place in Group C at 5-2 and would clinch a Top 16 berth with a victory. Roma lost 97-93 at DKV Joventut last week in its first game with interim head coach Nando Gentile on the sidelines. Now with another week to adjust to Gentile, the Romans will look to stay perfect at home. Meanwhile Olimpija has also undergone a recent coaching change and will take the floor Thursday for the first time under Jure Zdovc. But at 1-6, Zdovc will need to shake things up radically to keep his team in Top 16 contention. Former Olimpija guard Sani Becirovic turned in a masterful performance to lead Lottomatica to a 67-78 road win at Olimpija with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in just 25 minutes when they met last month. Becirovic remains the leader of Roma’s balanced squad. He teams with Ibby Jaaber, Brandon Jennings and Luigi Datome in a balanced backcourt that can also call upon veteran Jacopo Giachetti when needed. They will face a far younger set of guards – especially if veteran and former Roma playmaker Vlado Ilevski misses the game through injury. Saso Ozbolt and Jaka Klobucar started at guard last week with promising teenager Mirza Sarajlija seeing big minutes off the bench. Olimpija leans on Jasmin Hukic, Frank Robinson, Danjan Rudez and Miha Zupan at forward and Mirza Begic and Vladimir Golubovic in the middle. Among them, only Hukic has more than one season of Euroleague experience. Roma counters with Rodrigo De la Fuente, Andre Hutson and Roberto Gabini at forward and Primoz Brezec and Angelo Gigli at center. On paper, the history and numbers all favor Roma. Its team has not lost yet at home, while Olimpija is winless on the road. Roma has far more experience that Olimpija. And the hosts shoot better from every range, average nearly 3 more assists and 2 fewer turnovers per game than Olimpija. However with new coaches on both teams’ benches and Olimpja’s young and hungry team, no result would be a surprise.

GAME QUOTES

Lottomatica Roma
  • Interim head coach Nando Gentile and his Union Olimpija counterpart Jure Zdovc squared off a number of times in their playing careers, including in the final of the 1991 European championships, where Zdovc’s Yugoslavia bested Gentile’s Italy 73-88.
  • Guard Sani Becirovic began his Euroleague career with his Week 8 opponent, Union Olimpija. Becirovic played for Olimpija between 1999 and 2001, helping the club win one Slovenian championship and two Slovenian Cups.
  • Center Primoz Brezec played for Olimpija between 1998 and 2001, helping the club win two Slovenian championships and three Slovenian Cups. Brezec and Becirovic were teammates for two of those seasons.
  • Small forward Rodrigo de la Fuente was a teammate of current Union Olimpija point guard Vlado Ilievski for two seasons in Barcelona. They won the 2004 Spanish League championship together.
Union Olimpija
  • New coach head coach Jure Zdovc will coach at the Euroleague level for the first time against Lottomatica Roma.
  • Guard Bootsy Thornton is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague career. Thornton enters his team’s Week 8 game with 986 points in 92 career games.
  • Rookie Mirza Sarajlija leads all Euroleague guards in steals per minute over the past three games. Sarajlija has averaged 2.3 steals over 18.5 minutes per game in that time.
  • Center Vladimir Golubovic is coming off his best individual performance this season in the Euroleague with 12 points and 9 rebounds in 20 minutes against Tau Ceramica last week. He followed that up with 20 points and 8 boards in the Adriatic League over the weekend.
  • Swingman Frank Robinson has found his niche, averaging 13.5 points in the last two games after totaling 9 points in the three previous games.

Quotes Head Coaches

GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"It will not be a simple game. We had a reaction after Jasmin Repesa left but we must be careful. This is a fundamental game for us to reach the Top 16, we must be confident and try to play as a team. Union Olimpija is a physically strong team, strong in the paint. They just changed the coach and some players so this will not be the same team we met in Ljubljana. We must stay focused and be careful."
ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"The game against Lottomatica Roma is not our first priority as I have many things to worry about now. I have my head full of different thoughts and feelings. I have to get to know my players better and start working on the new philosophy I want to bring here. But that doesn't mean we will not prepare for this game. As I said many times before, I only want my players to think about the win. I am aware that Lottomatica Roma features ten excellent players who are having some problems in the Italian League, but not in the Euroleague, where they work perfectly, and it will be hard to surprise them in their own court. We will do everything in our hands to leave Rome with a good result for us."

Players

GIGLI, ANGELO
Lottomatica Roma
"They like to run on the court and they play not with the typical roles. We need to control the rhythm from the very beginning and we must not allow them to play their game."
GOLUBOVIC, VLADIMIR
Union Olimpija
"A difficult game is awaiting us, and a difficult rival who already showed its quality at Tivoli arena in the first leg. Nobody is thinking about a loss though, and we are travelling to Rome willing to fight for the win. We have enough motivation and I promise we will give our best efforts to try to beat Lottomatica in Italy."
