THE TAKE

Either ASCO Slask Wroclaw or Asvel Basket will remain atop Group G after the 2-1 teams meet for a showdown in Poland. Coach David Dedek's Slask team scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to put away Ludwigsburg for its second victory. The Polish side shot 67% and forced 19 turnovers. Slask did allow the Germans to shoot 67% (14-of-21) from long range, which made the game close after three quarters. But Dedek got a great boost from his reserves, which out-scored the starters 61-46. Small forwards Oliver Stevic (16 points) and Radoslaw Hyzy (13), point guard Rashid Atkins (13) and shooting guard Bartosz Diduszko (10) all scored in double figures off the bench. Playmaker Dawan Robinson led the starting unit with 18 points, six assists and three steals. If Dedek again gets that kind of offensive output, a 3-1 record would not be a surprise. Asvel improved to 2-1 by beating Panionios in overtime on the road. Coach Yves Baratet's team was out-shot 55%-49% from the floor but dominated the glass for a 36-22 rebounding advantage. Leading the way was power forward Chevon Troutman, who came off the bench for 18 points and 10 rebounds, including eight of the team's 16 offensive rebounds. All told, five Asvel players scored in double figures with small forward Laurent Foirest hitting for a team-high 19 points while center Uchenna Nsomwu collected 16 points and nine rebounds. Baratet may be a bit concerned about his bench though. Besides Troutman's stellar performance, the Asvel reserves only contributed seven points. That could be a problem against Slask.

Asco Slask Wroclaw beat Asvel Basket 78-65 in a battle of first place teams in Group G on Tuesday night. Asco Slask Wroclaw is now tied for first place with a 3-1 record, joining a three-way tie BC Kalev/Cramo and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas, that won their respective games against Ludwigsburg and Panionios On Telecoms. Meanwhile, Asvel fell to 2-2 and is fourth in the Group G standings. Rashid Atkins led the way for Slask with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, Torrell Martin added 13 and Dominik Tomczyk 12 on 4-for-4 two-pointers. Chevon Troutman posted 19 on 8-for-11 two-pointers for Asvel, Lawayne Wilson posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while Uchenna Nsomwu added 10 points and also 10 rebounds for another double-double. Slask opened the game with a 12-0 run and boosted its margin to 22-7 after 6 minutes. Asvel trailed all the way from that moment but managed to get within 58-56. Martin stepped up right when his team needed him to make Slask add its third win in Group G.

Atkins scored the first 5 points for Slask to open a 12-0 run early in the game, but after Wilson scored three minutes in for Asvel, the hosts remained in charge and held a 22-7 lead after six minutes with Atkins already with 13 points. Wilson seemed to be the only player focused for Asvel and scored 8 consecutive points to keep his side alive at 29-15. Troutman tried to push Asvel from downtown, but the answer was one more time Atkins, who put Slask ahead 38-21. Troutman helped get Asvel within 42-31 by halftime. Aymeric Jeanneau put Asvel back on track 48-42 early in the third quarter and then Laurent Foirest reduced the deficit to 3 from the foul line before Radoslav Hyzy extended again the difference to 58-50. Wilson opened the final quarter by getting Asvel closer, 58-56, but from the midway point, Slask kept on running fueled by Martin to take again a double-figure cushion at 74-64 with three minutes left in the game. Gai Deng fixed the final 78-65 for a deserved win of Wroclaw.
