THE TAKE

Group D's opening game day features an all-Greek battle between host Panellinios BC and Aris BSA. These two teams met in the first week of the season in mid-October with Aris winning at home 70-64. Head coach Ilias Zouros is in his second season with Panellinios and his club has started very strong in the Greek league. And it advanced to the Eurocup by knocking off Telekom Baskets Bonn and BC Kyiv in the two qualifying rounds. The leader has been guard Anthony Grundy, who is averaging over 16 points, more than 3 rebounds, 3 assists and nearly 2 steals a game. Center Jurica Golemac, who won the 2006 FIBA EuroCup Challenge with Ural Great Perm and reached the 2007 ULEB Cup quarterfinals with Hapoel Jerusalem, has added more than 13 points, 7 rebounds and nearly 4 assists. Forward Brad Newley has chipped in nearly 12 points and 6 rebounds while center Ivan Radenovic has scored in double figures in his second season as a professional. But no other player has averaged eight points for Zouros. Guard Manolis Papamakarios is a three-point threat. Center Djuro Ostojic tallied in double figures in both of the first qualifying round games while guard Georgios Kalatizis helps out with play-making duties and played for Aris in the Euroleague last season and won the Euroleague title with Panathinaikos in 2002 and 2007. If the rest of the bunch can help Grundy, then Panellinios stands a good chance of winning the Greek tussle. Aris, however, has started just as well in the Greek league. Head coach Andrea Mazzon is back at Aris after a short stint last season with Bologna, having led the Greek sides to the ULEB Cup final in 2006. Aris has reached the Last 16 of the Euroleague the past two seasons but hopes for a Eurocup title this time around. Mazzon's main weapon is guard Keydren Clark, who is averaging nearly 12 points as well as nearly 3 assists. Guard Savvas Iliadas plays some great defense and also averages 11 points while forward Sean Marshall is also in double figures in scoring. Center Blagota Sekulic meanwhile nearly averages 10 points and 6 rebounds and forward Spencer Nelson adds 8 points, 9 rebounds, nearly 2 assists and nearly 2 steals. Mazzon's team plays hard-nosed defense and rebounds very well. If players like Clark and Marshall can get hot from long range, Aris could have enough to beat Panellinios again.

Quotes Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios BC
"We face a team that we know very well. Aris has the experience of participating every year in European competitions, so the game will be particularly difficult. For our part, we have an important absence, that of Jurica Golemac, and it will be necessary for us to play together through this game if we want to win."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris BSA 2003
"A premiere in a European competition always hides many difficulties. At this given time period, Panellinios proves to be a better team. They are in excellent condition, and they have set a good pace to their game. They were greatly helped out by the back-to-back qualifying games they had, by which they reached phase of the Eurocup. Our philosophy, however, remains unchanged. We will fight for the victory every time."

Players

OSTOJIC, DJURO
Panellinios BC
‘’This game with Aris will be very difficult. Aris is a very good team and knows us very well. We played already against Aris in Thessaloniki this season, but lost. This, however, is a very different game and we will try to continue our string of good efforts."
ARGYROPOULOS, NIKOS
Aris BSA 2003
"We would like to begin our European run with a positive result, and in order for that to happen, we must be focused from the first minute to the very last one. Panellinios is in very good shape, they are ambitious, and they have many good players. It will be a very difficult game for both teams. If we make it though, we will be able to aim high concerning the rest of the competition."
ILIADIS, SAVVAS
Aris BSA 2003
"Our first game for the Eurocup is especially important. Our opponents are a very good team that has had an amazing beginning. We too, however, are an ambitious team, with many experienced players. Our goal must always be the victory, and we would all like to move on as far as possible in Europe."
Spencer Nelson - Aris BSAKeydren Clark's three-pointer with less than 3 seconds to go led Aris BSA 2003 to a 69-71 road win over Panellinios at Hellinikon Complex at the end of a great and balanced battle. The exciting duel saw many lead changes before Clark hit the game-winning shot. Clark finished with 22 points on 6 triples, while Spencer Nelson posted 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and Dimitris Tsaldaris added 10 points for the guests, who host Bnei Hasharon next week. Ivan Radenovic bagged 18 points and 7 boards and Brad Newley scored 17 in a losing effort for Panellinios, which takes on Turk Telekom next.

Newley started in fashion scoring 7 points in less than five minutes to lead Panellinios to a shiny 9-4 start. Clark nailed a three-pointer to bring Aris as close as 10-9, but the hosts remained in control of the game's tempo for an 18-11 lead before the first quarter ended at 18-14. With the score 20-14, the guests went on a 6-15 tear punctuated by another Clark triple to take the lead for the first time, 26-29. But Panellinios reacted immediately with a 9-point run for a 38-32 advantage as Newly, Radenovic and Georgios Kalaitzis connected. The game remained balanced, though, as Aris trimmed the difference before halftime to 38-36.

Ivan Radenovic - Panellinios BCThe back-and-forth battle continued after the break. Clark chipped-in another three-pointer for a 45-48 Aris lead, but Manolis Papamakarios answered back in the same way for a 50-48 Panellinios edge. Five times the lead changed hands as the hosts managed to grab a slight 58-55 advantage after 30 minutes. Both teams endured some bad decision making in the beginning of the final quarter as the game remained scoreless for about three minutes. Panellinios went up 60-55, but Clark and Blagota Sekulic reacted for a 62-63 Aris lead. Anthony Grundy and Papamakarios helped the hosts to 66-63, but the visitors found solutions again for a 66-68 lead. Radenovic tied it from the line 68-68 with 25 seconds remaining. Clark stepped up for Aris to fire in the deciding three-pointer to make it 68-71 less than 3 seconds before the final buzzer. Newley missed on purpose the second of a pair of free-throws, but no one from Panellinios could get the rebound as Aris celebrated an important road win to start the Eurocup.

Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios BC
"We didn't deserve to win and our defeat is fair. My team played very bad and this is connected with the absence of Golemac, because it changes our way of playing. We didn't succeed in defense, we lacked concentration and look at what happened. Now the whole team has to work hard in order to cover this defeat. The most important thing is to keep our feet on the Earth."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris BSA 2003
"Our target was for Clark to make the last shot, he did it and it was a great shot. I didn't want to go to overtime, because we miss energy. We had some hard time with injuries and didn't practice the way we would like to. My players tried to follow our strategic plan for this match against Panellinios and I am so happy for their effort, that I should thank them even after a defeat. We tried a lot and this is great. We searched the way to win and this proves a positive mentality. The day that we will believe that out team is better than really is, then we will lose. That means that we have to stay humble. In such a competition the most important thing is to protect the home court and try to win outside. So, we have to protect our home court next week against Bnei Hasharon."

Players

KALAITZIDIS, DIMITRIOS
Panellinios BC
"We played without Jurica Golemac and his absence affected a lot our game. We didn't manage to stop Clark, who is a very effective player and this cost us a lot. In general my team didn't play the way we normally do, because we missed concentration and committed many turnovers. Now we have to go forward and see the next games."
BARLOS, NIKOS
Aris BSA 2003
"It is a great win, which proved our potential and character. Panellinios has a great team and it is tough to beat them either at home, or on the road. We had a lot of confidence for this match and managed to drive it as we had planned to. Now we are 1-0, but it is too early to talk about the future. We have to play two games per week, but this is something that Aris has done for many years. The European competitions mean a lot for my club, so we have high expectations and I hope that we will accomplish our target."
