THE TAKE

AXA FC Barcelona looks to slow down red-hot Lottomatica Roma when the two meet at Barcelona’s Palau Blaugrana on Wednesday night in a Group C clash. Barca has dropped its last two games against the top two teams in the group, Panathinaikos and Real Madrid, to slip to 8-4 in the standings. Still the legendary club aims to secure at least a No. 2 seed ahead of the upcoming Top 16 draw. Meanwhile Roma is still trying to secure a berth to the next stage. By winning four of its last five games including a crucial meeting with chief rival Partizan Belgrade last week, Roma is now 5-7 and in control of its own destiny. In fact, Lottomatica Roma can clinch a spot in the Top 16 this week with a victory and with a loss by either Partizan or Cibona Zagreb – If Roma wins and Partizan loses, Roma would clinch at least fifth place in Group C, while if Roma wins and Cibona loses, Roma would secure at least the Top 16 spot that goes to the best sixth-place finisher. Many of the visitors will feel right at home in Barcelona – four members of the current Roma have played for the club. Forward Rodrigo De la Fuente spent nearly a decade in Barcelona, helping it to win the 2003 Euroleague title and four Spanish crowns. Big man Grego Fucka played five seasons, winning the Euroleague and two Spanish titles. Point guard Roko-Leni Ukic and forward Christian Drejer also suited up for Barca in the past. Barcelona blasted Roma 65-74 in the Italian capital when these teams met earlier this season as center Mario Kasun netted 18 points. Kasun is currently sidelined with heart trouble, however with a battery of big men including Denis Marconato, Fran Vazquez, Jordi Trias and even the young Albert Moncasi, head coach Dusko Ivanovic has the manpower to fight in the paint. Roma counters with Erazem Lorbek, Alesandro Tonollia and former Barca star Fucka. Both teams’ biggest assets are in the backcourt, where Ukic, David Hawkins and Allan Ray lead the Romans against Pepe Sanchez, Jaka Lakovic, Gianluca Basile and Alex Acker. The duels pitting the speedy Ukic and defensive ace Hawkins against the passing skills of Sanchez and all-around talent of Lakovic could be where this game is determined. A big game for any of those four gives his team a significant advantage. Kasun’s absence could work as a motivating factor for Barca, whose biggest challenge may be to match the spirit of a Roma team that started the season 1-6, but has now beaten some quality teams to climb back into the Top 16 race. Don’t bet against either team here in a promising game that could go wither way.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"We want to break this series of defeats in the game against Lottomatica. We need to win this game if we want to get the second spot in our group. We want to be again on the path of victories. They need to defeat us in order to get a spot in the Top 16, but playing in Palau Blagrana, in front of our fans, has become a key factor for us. I know this will be a very special match for some of its players, but the game begins is only a question of winning. It's a very important game."

Players

GRIMAU, ROGER
AXA FC Barcelona
"Our main goal is to win. After four defeats in a row, the only thing we have in our minds is to win this one. We're aware that we can't fail again. When we played against Lottomatica in Rome they weren't in a good shape, bur they have improved a lot since then. They are strong in the offensive rebounding, but if we can control this area we'll be able to play the fastbreak. We play this time against some players we know very well. I shared the locker room with some of them for years and a game like this is always something special. After the game we can go to dinner all together, but on the floor the only goal is to get the win."
DE LA FUENTE, RODRIGO
Lottomatica Roma
"For me, the game against Barcelona will be a very special game. I played there for 10 years and for the last four I was the captain. I will be very emotional. It will be my most difficult match. But it will be also important, as it's fundamental for Lottomatica for qualifying to the Top 16. Barca has a great team, with great players, but I am confident. I think we can do well. The qualification to Top 16 is only up to us."
Allan Ray - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica Roma completed a comeback from the nether regions of Group C and advanced to the Top 16 by defeating host AXA F.C. Barcelona 75-77 on Wednesday for its fifth win in the last six games. Roma raised its record to 6-7, and since Cibona lost in Group B, those six victories became the new cutoff for entry into the Top 16. Despite not playing on Wednesday, Fenerbahce Ulker of Group C also advanced for the same reason. Barcelona, meanwhile, dropped to 8-5 and will have a hard time rising above third place now. Roma landed 11 of its first 13 three-pointers in the game, but missed its next 6 before Alan Ray hit the last one his team attempted to re-take the lead for good in the next-to-last minute. David Hawkins, who led the winners with 22 points, finished the job at the foul line. He made 5 of 6 two-pointers, 2 of 2 triples and 6 of 6 free throws on the night. Ray and Roko-Leni Ukic follwed with 12 points each, Roberto Gabini 11 and Rodrigo De la Fuente 10. For Barcelona, Gianluca Basile had 14 points, Fran Vazquez 12 and Alex Acker 11. The evening had started with De la Fuente among nine Barcelona legends honored at mid-court during a 50 Years of European Club Basketball ceremony.

Ray got Lottomatica on the board first with a fastbreak layup, while Barcelona struggled to hit even open shots in the early going. Gabini's layup meant a 0-4 Roma lead, and even when Basile answered from downtown, Hawkins scored to keep Roma ahead 2-6. Acker buried a triple from the top for Barcelona, but Ukic joined the three-point shootout for a 6-9 Roma edge. Trias provided a highlight with a power dunk but Erazem Lorbek stroked from downtown and Hawkins soon slammed to force a Barcelona timeout at 8-14. Vazquez sank a jumper and free throws. De la Fuente was awarded another big ovation when he stepped on court, but it was Lorbek's second triple that kept Roma ahead 12-17. Sanchez and De La Fuente traded points before Vazquez sank jumper to get Barcelona within 17-19. Ukic nailed a triple but so did Acker at the other end. Ukic insisted from downtown while a final basket by Acker fixed the score at 22-25 after 10 minutes.

Gianluca Basile - AXA FC BarcelonaUkic stayed on fire and buried his third consecutive three-pointer right at the start of the second quarter. Vazquez tried to change the game momentum with a jump hook while Grimau scored in penetration to make Lottomatica call timeout at 26-28. Roma improved its defense right away but Barcelona was fully focused now. Lottomatica coach Jasmin Repesa tried to rotate players often to keep its up-tempo offense going. Ersan Ilyasova made free throws and soon added a power tip-in to make Barcelona regain the lead, 30-28. De La Fuente immediately answered in the other end, as Roma opted for a smaller lineup now. Hawkins sank foul shots and soon added a running jumper to put Roma back ahead, 30-35, after a 0-7 run. Denis Marconato sank his trademark mid-range jumper while Lakovic buried a shot off the dribble for a 34-35 Barcelona deficit. Ilyasova soon added a fast break layup to make Lottomatica call timeout at 36-35. Barcelona kept dominating the game with good defense, while Marconato followed a free throw with a basket in the paint to cap a 9-0 run that gave Barcelona a 39-35 halftime edge.

Acker blasted a three-pointer to open the second half. After Hawkins answered with a driving layup, Sanchez stole and hit his own basket, but Gabini came back down and drilled a triple for Rome. When he raised up again at the arc, Gabini's next shot from downtown made it 44-43 Hawkins was the next Roma player to launch from deep, and when that fell, the guests were ahead 44-46. Vazquez tied it at the free throw line, but here came Gabini again, alone up top, to blast his third triple of the quarter already. Vazquez fed Acker inside, but Ray's consecutive spinning layups, the second of which came with a free throw, boosted Roma in front by 48-54. Barcelona struck right back with free throws by Basile and a big triple from Lakovic. De la Fuente's jumper let Roma breathe and Fucka added his own from the baseline. De la Fuente ended the quarter with a hustling put-back as Roma staked a 56-60 lead afer 30 minutes.

Roberto Gabini - Lottomatica RomaAfter a quiet first minute, Basile's extra deep triple to start the final quarter set up Barcelona's go-ahead basket, a Jordi Trias layup at 61-60. Hawkins returned after a Roma timeout to re-take the lead with a running jumper, but Roger Grimau did the same on the break for Barcelona. Trias soon added free throws to make it 65-62, and though Hawkins got a jumper back, Lakovic missed both free throws on a technical foul called against Fucka. A slow couple minmutes ended with Hawkins at the line making 2 of 2 free throws for a new Roma lead, 65-66, with just over 4 minutes left. After a timeout, Basile took it back for Barcelona with another rainbow triple, and Grimau drove the lane for another basket that made it 70-66. Roma took timeout this time, and Lorbek hit a baseline jumper for the guests, who then stole and saw Ukic's go-ahead triple try rim out. A minute-long Barcelona possession ended without points, however, and Ray made the hosts pay with his go-ahead triple on a cross-court pass from Ukic with 1 minute, 12 seconds left. Next, with 16 seconds left, Ray took a huge offensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws to make it 70-73. Lakovic and De la Fuente traded free throws first, as did Basile and Hawkins, making it 74-77 when Lakovic went to the line with 3 seconds left. He made the first, missed the second, but Basile's turnaround jumper missed, as did Grimau's tip attempt on the buzzer.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"First of all, I want to congratulate Roma for winning the game, a game that we also could have won. We have recently lost three games in the final minutes, but earlier in the season we were winning. The talent level of the team neither is as good as it was at the start of the season, nor as bad as the recent losing streak suggests. We need a little more control in the important moments. Every defeat hurts, it doesn't hurt less just because we have already qualified for the Top 16."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"I am very satisfied with my players, who have beaten a historic team in a historic court and mathematically qualified for the Top 16. Despite having lots of injuries and playing with little strength and lack of energy, we have done what we needed. Everything about our team is team-oriented. We play like a team, we have team spirit and all of this must stay as our reference point for the future."

Players

VAZQUEZ, FRAN
AXA FC Barcelona
"We started the game well, defending their important players. Later in the game they started hitting three-pointers and we had a couple of poor possessions, turning the ball over and taking quick shots, which allowed Lottomatica to win the game. The two players that we had identified as important were Allan Ray and Erazem Lorbek. As a result, David Hawkins stepped up and we didn't react very well. We need to maintain an advantage when we are winning the game and keep cool heads to have longer possessions and win close games."
HAWKINS, DAVID
Lottomatica Roma
"It was a very intense game. We knew we were coming to play a great team. Our goal was to make them beat us five versus five with no silly turnovers or giving up offensive rebounds. In the first half we didn't do it. If you have a great shooting night, it is a burden off your back, which gives you strength for future games."
