THE TAKE

An already pivotal game in Group D is taking place on Thursday when Armani Jeans Milano hosts Panionios On Telecoms. AJ Milano is looking for its first win and needs to break its four-game losing streak to keep its Top 16 options alive. Meanwhile, Panionios is tied with Real Madrid, Efes Pilsen and Partizan at 2-2 and is on a two-game winning streak. Milano is expected to be without center Pape Sow, who missed the last three Euroleague games. Even with that, power forward Mike Hall stepped up in the last game against Real Madrid, earning Week 4 MVP honors. Hall leads a frontcourt that also features two blue-collar big men in Mason Rocca and Mindaugas Katelynas, as well as defensive center Joey Beard. Hall will test his low post skills against power forward Lonny Baxter, who has been unstoppable lately. Meanwhile, Rocca and Katelynas will hustle at both ends against Giannis Giannoulis, Miroslav Raicevic and Levon Kendall. Panionios counts on forward Goran Nikolic to make a difference due to his experience and deep range. Milano is really deep at point guard, with Massimo Bulleri, up-and-coming playmaker Luca Vitali and Yohann Sangare. Bulleri and Vitali will have the tough mission to guard Aaron Miles, who plays the most minutes at point guard with Vasilios Xanthopoulos backing him up. Panionios could play twin point guards with Miles and Ivan Zoroski sharing playing time on court. The guests, however, must worry about stopping David Hawkins due to his intensity and driving skills. Ioannis Kalampokis seems the right man to do it, while Branko Cvetkovic is set to test his shooting skills against Jobey Thomas and Marco Mordente. Panionios started to be highly competitive when Kalampokis, Miles and Baxter found their rhythm. Meanwhile, Milano has to make the most out of natural miss-matches like Vitali or Hawkins. Expect a defensive battle in which only one team will survive in Milano on Thursday.

GAME NOTES

Armani Jeans Milano

  • Guard Massimo Bulleri enters this week’s game against Real Madrid needing just 1 more point to reach 1,000 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Mike Hall is coming off the best individual performance of his brief Euroleague career. Hall had 21 points and 9 rebounds in Week 4 as he became the second player in three weeks to win the weekly honor despite the fact that his team lost.
  • Armani Jeans remains on record-setting free throw shooting pace as a team. Through four games, the club has made 45 of 50 free throws for an incredible 90%. Mike Hall and Jobey Thomas lead the effort going a combined 20 for 20 thus far. No team has ever shot above 83% from the line in a Euroleague Basketball season.

Panionios On Telecoms

  • Point guard Aaron Miles is the clear leader of his team so far this season. Miles leads Panionios in scoring (12 ppg.), rebounds (4.3 rpg.), assists (4.5 apg.) and steals (1.8 spg.). No other player can make that claim.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"Panionios is a good team, as it showed in the last two victories over Efes Pilsen and Partizan. This is a key game for us, if we want to hope to continue our run in the competition. After four defeats, we want to reach the first success and we want to do this in front of our crowd, to start in the best way our series of four games at home between the Euroleague and Italian League. We are coming off a loss in Avellino, but the guys are working well during practice and I'm sure that they will give everything they have on the floor, also for the fans."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Panionios On Telecoms
"Armani Jeans Milano is a much better team than their place in the standings. In the game against CSKA Moscow, they fought until the end and lost in details. They compete at home and definitely they are going to be hungry for the first Euroleague win in order to keep their hopes for the second round alive. All these things make Armani the favorite team in our match up. Meanwhile, Panionios must focus on its target. During the last two weeks, we have all our players in the practices and that's the most important thing for a coaching stuff. Our philosophy will be the same as against Efes Pilsen. That means concentration during the whole game in order to fight for the win. One other key fact is that Armani has many capable shooters, who we have to stop."

Players

HAWKINS, DAVID
AJ Milano
"The next game is very important for us. After the first four defeats, we still want to continue in our adventure in this Euroleague, and try to qualify to the next level of the competition, the Top 16. That's why we have to start defeating Panionios. We are all focused on this, and we are ready to prove it on the floor."
GIANNOULIS, YANNIS
Panionios On Telecoms
"The game against AJ Milano is the final road game that we must give within a week. We managed to beat Aris on the road in the Greek Cup and we edged Maroussi in the Greek League, so our desire to win in Milano is at the highest level. Milano is a historical club and despite their zero wins in the Euroleague so far, they are very dangerous and capable of beating any opponents that will underestimate them. We have to show character like we did in the two previous road games in order to accomplish the third straight win in the competition. Armani plays a team game and since they compete at home our goal is not to allow them control the rhythm. I believe we are ready enough to take the third win in a row."
David Hawkins - Lottomatica RomaArmani Jeans Milano registered its first win in Group D by edging Panionios On Telecoms 77-73 at home on Thursday night. AJ Milano broke its four-game losing streak and improved to 1-4 in the Group D standings. Meanwhile, Panionios ties with Efes Pilsen and Partizan for third place at 2-3. David Hawkins led the winners with 18 points on 5-for-7 two-pointers and 8-for-8 free throws. Mason Rocca posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, as well as being the key player down the stretch, while Mike Hall had 14 points - all in the second half - on 4-for-6 three-pointers for Milano. Aaron Miles led Panionios with 16 points. Lonny Baxter added 15 and 12 rebounds for another double-double, Miroslav Raicevic had 14 points while Branko Cvetkovic got 10 for the guests. The game saw as many as 18 lead changes before Ioannis Kalampokis sank free throws to give Panionios its final lead, 72-73, with a minute to go. Rocca took over with a put-back layup and added a three-point play to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Raicevic got Panionios going with a long jumper while Baxter added a free throw for a 0-3 lead, as the guests tried to get its big men involved. Yohann Sangare sank a six-meter shot with the left corner that Rocca followed with his trademark layup to put Milano ahead, 4-3. Miles fed Baxter for a dunk but Hawkins copied him in the other end. Cvetkovic made free throws but another basket by Rocca provided another lead change, 8-7. Baxter and an unstoppable Rocca traded layups, but consecutive triples by Jobey Thomas allowed Milano to get a five-point lead, 16-11. Cvetkovic kept pacing Panionios with 4 unanswered points to get Panionios as close as 16-15. Armani Jeans kept missing open shots now until Rocca found an fast break layup off a steal. Baxter beat the buzzer with a put-back layup to bring Panionios within 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Loni Baxter - Panionios On TelecomsBoth teams struggled to score early in the second quarter, trading turnovers until Raicevic stepped up with free throws. Miles beat the shot clock buzzer with a triple, good for a 18-22 Panionios lead. AJ Milano had been scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Massimo Bulleri found an easy basket but Ivan Zoroski and Raicevic answered from downtown to boost the guests' margin to 20-28. Cvetkovic capped a 0-8 Panionios run with an acrobatic driving layup, as Luca Vitali tried to change things for Milano. Raicevic took over with a big dunk coming off the baseline that Hawkins improved with a three-point play. Rocca made free throws to make Panionios call timeout at 27-32. Hawkins sank 4-for-4 foul shots, Panionios struggled against the hosts' zone defense. Baxter tried to change things with foul shots that Bulleri matched with an outstanding basket. Baxter scored again but a triple by Vitali tied it at 36-36. Miles had the last word in this quarter, as his final basket gave Panionios a 36-38 halftime edge.

Hall sank a mid-range jumper right after the break but Hawkins scored off a steal to get Milano going. Cvetkovic took over with a power layup to tie the game again, 40-40. It didn't last long, however, as Raicevic nailed a triple while a free throw by Miles put the guests back ahead, 40-44. Sangare and Raicevic traded layups while Rocca and Kalampokis sank foul shots for a 43-47 score. Baxter was next on the line and did not miss for a 43-49 Panionios lead. Hawkins stepped up with a big three-point play but Miles soon answered with a layup that Kalampokis followed with a jumper to make the hosts call timeout at 48-53. Hall stepped up with a three-pointer and even when Miles matched it with a three-point play, Milano soon got back in track. Free throws by Hawkins ignited a 9-0 run in which a floating layup by Marco Mordente and another bomb from downtown by Hall gave Milano a six-point lead, 62-56, after 30 minutes.

Panionios improved its defense right at the start of the fourth quarter, forcing Milano to committ three early turnovers in this period. Meanwhile, Miles made free throws while Zoroski followed a layup with three-pointer to make the hosts call timeout at 62-63. Miles capped a 0-10 Panionios run with his own shot from downtown but Hall buried a critical triple to keep Milano within 65-66. Hawkins added a put-back basket to provide another lead change, 67-66. Panionios called timeout while Levon Kendall and Baxter stepped up with foul shots to put the guests back ahead, 67-69, with 4 minutes to go. Hall - who else? - nailed an incredible three-pointer but Kendall fired in a turnaround jumper for a 70-71 Panionios edge. Thomas buried a four-meter jumper but Kalampokis put Panionios back ahead, 72-73. Rocca rescued Milano with a put-back layup, Baxter missed in the other end while Vitali fed Rocca for a three-point play that gave the hosts a 77-73 edge with 42.5 seconds remaining. Cvetkovic and Miles missed key shots, allowing all Milano fans to celebrate their team's first Euroleague win this season!

Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"It was a very important game because of the standings, and this victory allows us the chance to still believe in the Top 16. We did a very good job during practice, we had some good runs on offense, and we managed well the last minute. We are searching for the right rotation between our point guards, and a good balace between Sangaré, Bulleri and Vitali. We didn't have a lot of crowd tonight, but we had a great feeling in the arena."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Panionios On Telecoms
"Milano was more lucky than us in the final minutes. Some details decided this game, and we were not able to catch the win in the final seconds. Raicevic sat out in the last quarter because of his early four fouls and also because it was a technical choice. It was my responsibility."

Players

SANGARE, YOHANN
AJ Milano
"I was back in the starting five tonight, but I knew it would be difficult to play a lot of minutes every game. Tonight the coach asked me for defensive work on Aaron Miles, who I know very well since I played against him in the French League when I was in Villeurbanne and he was playing for Pau. We finished the first leg of the competition with a 1-4 record, but I think we deserve more when you look at the games we played in Belgrade and Madrid. But you have to consider that we played three games away and it's very difficult to win anywhere in the Euroleague."
BEARD, JOEY
AJ Milano
"The most important thing tonight is the victory, and most of all that we finally won a close game in the final minutes, after our bad losses in Belgrade and Madrid. This success made us happy in the locker room. We really needed a victory to become more confident and continue to believe in the Top 16. We are working hard to improve our game, and I'm happy that players like Mike Hall are growing up after a complicated start in this competition. But he's young and talented, he needs a little more time to be better and better."
HALL, MIKE
AJ Milano
"We had our backs against the wall and this win shows a lot about the basketball team we are. We have to play as a team for the rest of the year, whether it is in the Euroleague or in the Italian League. We have talented players and it goes down who wants it more. This is what we have to go all year long. I never lose confidence and I am ready to step up, make big shots, play defense or just do anything that help us win games. CSKA Moscow is our next opponent. If you want to be a great team, you have to beat great teams. We must now practice hard and be ready for that game."
MILES, AARON
Panionios On Telecoms
"I think it was a good game tonight, a good battle between our teams. We lost in the last minute. I think the offensive rebound and the layup of Mason Rocca to make Milano lead again was the decisive play of the game tonight. A victory would have been very important for our run in the competition, but this is basketball. We were up by 10 in the second quarter and then we started very well the final one, but every game is hard and basketball is a game of runs: they had the good one at the end."
