THE TAKE

A pivotal game in the Group C standings takes place in the Italian capital on Thursday when Lottomatica Roma hosts CSKA Moscow. Lottomatica has seen better days, having dropped three straight Euroleague games and six overall. Head coach Nando Gentile’s men are now in fourth place in Group C with a 3-3 mark, but only one win away from second place. CSKA is tied with Caja Laboral for second place at 4-2. Arguably Roma’s biggest win of the season came back in Week 2 in Moscow when Andre Hutson scored 15 to lead Lottomatica to a 69-74 road win over CSKA. The Russian champs have won their last three Euroleague games and showed with wins at Maroussi and Laboral that they are more than equipped to win on the road. CSKA also has a different look than it did last time against Roma. Sasha Kaun has produced two very nice games as starting center and Viktor Khryapa has become a game-changer as a point forward. When they produce alongside J.R. Holden, Trajan Langdon and Ramunas Siskauskas, CSKA is tough to beat. Dmitry Sokolov could be back to help Kaun in the middle this week against Roma. The hosts have been short-handed since Angelo Gigli went down, leaving reserve Andrea Crosariol as their only true center. Accordingly, CSKA’s pivotmen may find the likes of the smaller Herve Toure or Alessandro Tonolli guarding them. Hutson and Khryapa present a promising matchup at power forward. Both teams feature deep backcourts, with Roma led by Ibby Jaaber in addition to Luca Vitali, Jacopo Giachetti and Ricky Minard plus Kennedy Winston at small forward. Winston will find himself in a crucial duel against former MVP Siskauskas, while Vitali matches up against Zoran Planinic in another guard matchup. With Holden looking to silence Jaaber and Langdon out to top Minard, it’s clear that a number of individual matchups could produce the winner. Ultimately the battle inside could be the determining factor. Unless Crosariol can hang in for 30-plus minutes, Roma must use its smaller, faster lineup to its advantage, trying to run with Kenendy, Toure and Hutson to generate east points. If Holden or Planinic can control the ball and set up more halfcourt sets, CSKA could be tough to stop.

GAME NOTES

Lottomatica Roma

Kennedy Winston has scored in double figures in six consecutive Euroleague appearances.

Ibby Jaaber made his Euroleague debut in Moscow against CSKA in February 2008. He scored 12 points that night, but CSKA won 72-71 on a Trajan Langdon buzzer-beater.

Ricky Minard scored a season-high 15 points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting in last week’s game at Caja Laboral.

Herve Toure scored a season-high 13 points in a Week 2 win over CSKA in Moscow.

Andre Hutson scored a season-high 13 points in a Week 2 win over CSKA in Moscow.

Luca Vitali has made 10 consecutive free throws over his past five Euroleague appearances.

CSKA Moscow

Trajan Langdon needs 5 more three-pointers to become the sixth player in Euroleague Basketball history to make 300 triples in his career.

Langdon has made 18 consecutive free throws over his past six Euroleague games.

Langdon sank a famous buzzer-beating triple to beat Lottomatica 72-71 in the Top 16 opener in February 2008. He led CSKA with 22 points that night.

Zoran Planinic needs 1 more assist to reach Marko Popovic for 25th place on the Euroleague career assists charts. He currently has 265 career assists.

Planinic scored a season-high 22 points in Week 2 against Lottomatica. He made 5 of 6 two pointers, 2 of 4 threes, 6 of 6 free throws and had 7 rebounds in that contest. In the other five games this season, Planinic has scored a total of 20 points on 7 of 15 two-pointers, 0 for 7 threes and 8 rebounds.

Viktor Khryapa needs just 4 more blocked shots to reach the career top 10 in that category. He enters this game in 14th place with 76 blocks from 78 games.

Khryapa has at least 1 steal in each of his last eight Euroleague appearances.

Quotes Head Coaches

GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"We are in a very difficult period. Our greatest enemies are not our competitors, but the lack of confidence, fear and being too nervous. We have to solve this aspect first of all. We already showed we can win against very strong teams in very difficult games. We have to think about that. We must play more serene, focused, trying not to repeat the same mistakes on defense we did in the last game in the Italian League. If we gain more confidence, stay together and play better on defense, we can face every team, as we already showed. A win against CSKA would be very important for that, more than for the ranking."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"This will be one of the most difficult games for us. Lottomatica lost only to Maccabi at home in overtime with big chances to get a win. Their game is built on leaders – Jaaber, Hutson and Winston, who play 30-35 minutes a game each. They also can rely on other players, and if you will not pay enough attention to Minard or Toure, for example, you will pay the price for that. We played some good games, showed a good level of basketball against Caja Laboral and Maroussi, but we weren’t that impressive against Zalgiris on Sunday, especially on offense. Partially I can explain that with some downfall of our leaders’ shape as they have carried a big load from the beginning of the season, so they got a day for rest and recovery upon our return from Kaunas. And we started to prepare for Lottomatica specifically from Tuesday. Besides offense, we will prepare some defensive adjustments, because Lottomatica is a high-scoring team. Despite the loss in the recent Italian League game, they scored 97 points."

Players

VITALI, LUCA
Lottomatica Roma
"We arrive at the game with CSKA having lost six in a row. A success against CSKA would mean first of all renewed confidence. In fact, at this moment, our confidence is our greatest problem. Obviously, a win would also be very important for our future in the Euroleague and the qualification for the Top 16. We hope our fans will stay close and help us in this difficult moment."
LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"The game has nothing to do with revenge. We are coming off a tough loss against Zalgiris in the VTB League, so we have to think about improving our game first. We know that Lottomatica is playing up-and-down right now, but we respect them, we know that they have some very good players, are a very good team overall and they need this win as much as we do."
Sasha Kaun - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow advanced to the Top 16 and joined a three-way tie atop the Group C standings by downing Lottomatica Roma 57-72 in the Italian capital on Thursday night. CSKA improved to 5-2 and registered its fourth consecutive win to tie atop the Group C table with Maccabi Electra and Caja Laboral. Lottomatica dropped to 3-4 by registering its fourth consecutive loss and faces a do-or-die battle for fourth place against Maroussi BC, fifth at 2-5, in Rome next week. Lottomatica will advance to the Top 16 if it beats Maroussi. Trajan Langdon and Sasha Kaun led the winners each with 13 points. Langdon hit 4-of-5 three-pointers while Kaun added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Zoran Planinic added 12 points and J.R. Holden had 11 for CSKA. Andre Hutson had 18 points for Lottomatica while Herve Toure added 14. Langdon and Ramunas Siskauskas struck from downtown in a 0-13 opening run that allowed CSKA to keep a 16-24 margin after 10 minutes. Langdon stayed on fire and got some help from Holden and Kaun to make it a 19-point game, 22-41, at halftime. Three-point accuracy and a dominant Kaun allowed CSKA to break the game open, 34-61, late in the third quarter. Nothing changed from that moment, as Roma only rallied once the outcome was clear.

Kaun got CSKA going with a two-handed dunk - and the free throw that came with it. Langdon soon added a three-pointer and Viktor Khryapa made free throws for a 0-8 lead. Lottomatica had been scoreless for more than 2 minutes and an open jumper by Siskauskas made the hosts call timeout at 0-10. Roma failed to get Hutson and Ibby Jaaber involved and Siskauskas downed a triple that capped a 0-13 CSKA run. Hutson tried to change things with free throws but Langdon answered from downtown for a 2-16 score. Rodrigo De La Fuente hit foul shots and Kennedy Winston found his first points on a driving layup, as Lottomatica improved its defense with its second unit on court. Planinic sank a jumper that kept CSKA way ahead, 7-20. Winston scored again in penetration and free throws by Ricky Minard gave the hosts some hope at 11-21. CSKA struggled to score now and a three-pointer by Toure brought Roma back to life, 14-21. Kaun silenced the crowd with a jump hook and a free throw by Andrei Vorontsevich allowed CSKA to keep a 16-24 lead after 10 minutes.

Roma opted to rest its main players early in the second quarter. Meanwhile, CSKA tried to play more aggressive down low with Nikita Kurbanov and Kaun together on court. Holden found its first points on a driving layup that Langdon followed with a rainbow triple to make it a 13-point game, 16-29. Roma had been scoreless for more then 3 minutes until Toure struck from downtown. Langdon answered in the same way and Holden added a fast break layup for a 19-34 score. Lottomatica brought Jaaber, Hutson and Winston back in the game but struggled to find open shots. CSKA had started to use long possessions and powered the offensive board through Kaun. Both teams went scoreless for more than 2 minutes, however, until Hutson downed a six-meter jumper. Planinic sank a mid-range shot and soon scored in penetration to boost the guests' lead to 21-38. A foul shot by Hutson and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Holden fixed the halftime score at 22-41.

Andre Hutson - Lottomatica RomaWinston scored in penetration soon after the break but an open three-pointer by Planinic gave CSKA a 24-44 margin. Lottomatica tried to use quick possessions but kept struggling to find good shots and could not find Hutson due to Khryapa's outstanding defense. Kaun shined with a big dunk to break the game open, 24-46. Hutson stepped up with a baseline jumper and Minard added a running jumper for a 28-46 Roma deficit. Kaun found room for another uncontested dunk and a three-pointer by Siskauskas made the hosts call timeout at 28-51. Planinic beat the shot clock with a corner triple and Andrea Crosariol fouled out soon after that. Kurbanov added a baseline jumper to make it a 26-point game, 30-56. Hutson sank consecutive jumpers but Kurbanov struck from downtown and Kaun added a layup for a 34-61 score. Back-to-back baskets by De La Fuente got Lottomatica within 38-63 after 30 minutes.

The outcome was clear already but Lottomatica tried to return to the game early in the fourth quarter. Alessandro Tonolli sank free throws and Toure added a layup-plus-foul to bring the hosts within 43-63. Jaaber scored in penetration to cap a 7-0 Roma run. CSKA struggled to score and tried to use twin point guards with Holden and Anton Ponkrashov together on court, also given playing time to Dimitriy Sokolov, back in the team after an injury. CSKA had troubles against the hosts' zone defense while three-pointers by Luca Vitali and Toure brought Roma within 51-65 with under 6 minutes left. Holden and Ponkrashov sank free throws to make CSKA put the victory on ice, 53-68, with less than 3 minutes to go. Everything was said and done already, as CSKA left Rome with a good-as-gold road win and a Top 16 berth while Lottomatica must break its losing streak right away to make it to the next round.

“The key for this game was our defense. In fact, we took Jaaber and Winston, who had done a lot of damage in Moscow, out of the game. We took the right conclusions from that loss and defended very focused against Lottomatica’s pick-n-rolls, which they use to create mismatches for their leaders. On offense we used our perimeter where Holden, Langdon, Planinic and Siskauskas dominated.”
