THE TAKE

Armani Jeans Milano seeks to make a run at a spot in the Top 16 when it hosts Efes Pilsen in a Group B matchup on Wednesday. Milano comes into the game with a 2-6 record, but has yet to win at home this season. However a victory here would give Milano a fighting chance the rest of the way. Meanwhile Efes improved to 5-3 and grabbed fourth place in the group by blasting Cibona 100-74 last week. It was Efes’s seconds straight win and more importantly, the second straight strong showing from playmaker Scoonie Penn. Drew Nicholas scored 16 and grabbed a Euroleague career-best 7 rebounds as Efes was an 80-70 winner when these teams last met in October. However this is not the same Milano squad – three of the team’s top four scorers from that night are no longer with the club, while their replacements, Danilo Gallinari, Melvin Booker and Anthony Giovacchini, have lifted the club. Although Efes has scored at least 90 in each of the last two weeks, this game has the makings of a low-scoring, defensive battle, especially since Milano only reached the 90-point barrier once. Head coach Attilio Caja’s side leans heavily on its starting five, which is one reason that the veteran playmaker Booker looks to maintain a slower tempo. That could be a challenge this week against the more athletic Efes guys. Booker and Giovacchini will go against Penn and Nicholas in the key backcourt matchups that will determine the pace of the game. Efes’s Kenny Gregory and Mustafa Abi will try and tame Milano’s top gun, Gallinari, in the small forward duel, while the duo of Loren Woods and Kerem Gonlum will go against Travis Watson and Casey Shaw in the paint. The starting power forwards are among their respective teams more athletic players, with Milano’s high-flying and deep-shooting Ansu Sesay facing Efes’s Andre Hutson. The team’s respective X-factors off the bench are Milano shooter Dusan Vukcevic, who started five times this season, and Efes big man Ermal Kuqo. If Efes can force a style that will require the teams to go deeper into their reserves, either by playing at a supped up pace or by drawing many fouls, it will have a distinct advantage over the hosts. Although Milano has not won at home yet this season, its four losses have all been by small margins and it knows that to mount a Top 16 charge, it must start winning at home now. That pressure should raise the intensity of this game, where no result is unexpected.

Quotes Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"Playing Efes Pilsen will be a very nice experience, because they have great ambitions for this Euroleague. We are in a good moment, and we want to do whatever we can to win this game. This success would mean a lot in terms of standings, prestige and confidence. We know that they have a pretty good team, with talented perimeter players such as Scoonie Penn, Drew Nicholas, Serkan Erdogan and Rashard Wright, but they are strong, too, in the paint, with tall and powerful players. We have to play a good defense for all the 40 minutes of the game and develop our offensive play searching for open shots for everybody, as we did in the last games. We rely on our fans, because we’ll play in the smaller Palalido, and they will be closer to the floor."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
“Armani Jeans Milano is a much improved team since the time that we met in Istanbul. They have been playing better and better since the addition of Melvin Booker and return of Danilo Gallinari from injury. They have found a particular way of play that has been working well for them. And their good results recently showed this. Personally I look forward to coming to Italy to play. Because it’s a place for me which I enjoyed the basketball and life so much when I was in Treviso with Benetton. And Milano is always a great place to play. Our players are in good shape and playing well, too. And our recent results also showed this. So it should be a very good game.”

"Efes Pilsen is a very strong team led by a coach who knows Italian basketball very well. They come to Milan searching for a victory, so we have to stay focused during all the game and try to avoid their fastbreak. We have win a game in front of our crowd, after our good performances away from home. If we defeat them, we would be back fighting for the Top 16, definitely. And also, last but not least, a victory will boost our confidence for the next key games."
PENN, SCOONIE
Efes Pilsen
“We are improving our game day by day as we are overcoming our mistakes and playing better than before. Our situation in the group is not bad at the moment, but the thing is that we are aiming to go higher. This is one of the key matches on the road that we have to win for our target of reaching the top of the group. Armani is better than the day we played for sure. They found rhythm and are looking more dangerous. Anyway, we are playing good too and I hope we keep on winning.”
James Penn, Efes Pilsen celebrates Efes Pilsen registered its third consecutive win in Group B by edging Armani Jeans 73-76 in Milano, Italy on Wednesday night. Efes improved to 6-3 and will at least tie for the third place in this group at the end of this round. Meanwhile, Milano dropped to 2-7 and needs a major turnaround in 2008 to reach the Top 16. Kenny Gregory paced the winners with 20 points on 5-for-6 three-pointers. Scoonie Penn added 15 and 6 assists, Drew Nicholas had 14 while Andre Hutson got 10 for Efes. Dusan Vukcevic had 16 points for Milano, Travis Watson added 13 and Mindaugas Katelynas 11 for the hosts. Melvin Booker opened the scoring with a mid-range jumper, as Efes needed more than 2 minutes to find the way to the basket. Meanwhile, Travis Watson shined with a power dunk to give Milano a 4-0 lead. Hutson stepped up with free throws that Danilo Gallinari erased with a left-handed layup. Milano had not allowed any easy shots but Nicholas buried a triple coming off a screen. Gregory also stroke from downtown to give the guests their first lead, 6-8. Pietro Aradori made free throws but Gregory fired in another three-pointer and by the time Kerem Gonlum made a free throws, Efes had a 8-12 lead. Casey Shaw shined with a second-chance basket that Booker followed with free throws to tie the game at 12-12. Gallinari capped a 6-0 run with a big basket that put Milano back ahead, 14-12. Efes had started to power the offensive board but Milano had readjusted its defense. Efes missed 5 consecutive shots until Gregory fired in his third three-pointer. Even with that, Nicholas drew a foul and made a free throw that allowed Efes to get a 14-16 edge at the end of the first quarter.

Dusan Vukcevic - AJ MilanoAnsu Sesay provided a highlight with a step-back jumper and the free throw that came with it. Kuqo took revenge with a seven-meter triple to make Efes regain the lead, 17-19. Vukcevic immediately answered from downtown but Arslan hit a running jumper and Gregory added free throws to keep the guests ahead at 20-23. Vukcevic fired in another three-pointer while Watson beat Loren Woods with a power layup, good for a 25-25 tie. Milano had switched to a 2-3 zone defense that Woods beat with an easy layup. Arslan took over with a big triple from the left wing but a red hot Vukcevic copied him for a 28-30 Milano deficit. Woods finished a long three-chance Efes offense with an easy basket, making Milano call timeout at 28-32. Katelynas shined with a jump hook that Hutson erased with a five-meter jumper. Katelynas insisted with a power layup that Kuqo matched with yet another easy basket in the other end. Gallinari fed Aradori for a layup to get Milano within 34-36 at halftime.

Watson tied the game with an easy basket right after the break while Katelynas fired in a triple from the top of the key to make the hosts regain a 39-36 lead. Hutson hit his trademark baseline jumper, as Efes had improved its aggressiveness early in the third quarter. Hutson shined with a big basket in the low post for a 39-40 Efes edge. Gallinari stepped up with an acrobatic basket, as Milano kept shining in defense. Meanwhile, Booker fed Katelynas for a layup in transition that made Efes coach David Blatt call a much-needed timeout. Scoonie Penn stepped up with a three-point play while Gregory buried yet another three-pointer to put Efes back ahead, 43-46. Milano struggled to find good options in offense, while Nicholas capped a 0-9 run with a step-back triple, making Milano call timeout. Sesay tried to bring Milano back to life while Vukcevic added a driving layup to get the hosts within 47-50. Penn made free throws but Vukcevic answered from downtown to keep Milano as close as 50-52. Nicholas scored again while Shaw stepped up with 4 quick points to get the hosts within 54-56. Penn shined with a driving basket while Nicholas beat the buzzer with a wild triple for a 54-61 Efes margin after 30 minutes.

Mindaugas Katelynas and Loren Woods - AJ Milano - Efes PilsenMilano tried to speed up the game tempo early in the fourth quarter but kept missing open shots. Both teams went scoreless for more than 2 minutes, however, until Sesay stepped up with a driving layup. Penn shined with a mid-range jumper while Gregory hit his fifth triple in as many attempts to give Efes its first double-digit lead, 56-66, with 7 minutes to go. Milano switched back to zone defense and Aradori scored coming off the baseline, as Efes started to make too many mistakes right when it mattered. Milano kept struggling to score while Hutson hit free throws to keep Efes out of trouble, 58-68. Watson shined with an uncontested dunk and soon added a power layup to give Milano some hope, 62-68. Nicholas stepped up with a long two-pointer and soon added a fast break layup that sealed the outcome, 62-72, with less than 3 minutes to go. Watson dunked it again and soon added a free throw but it happened to be too little, too late for the hosts. Penn shined with a driving layup and Efes returned home with a valuable road win.

Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"We have to talk about a lost game, but I don't feel defeated tonight. I think we did a great job tonight. We had some great efforts from everybody, the team fought very well for the whole game against Efes Pilsen, which is a very talented and deep team. I am very satisfied because we continue in our good period. Efes Pilsen is a better team than us, so we have to look at things other than the result of this game. Every player did a great job, both on defense and offense. Our bad three-points percentage was the key of the game for us, because we missed some open shots."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"We needed to play 40 minutes of good basketball to win here. Milano is a team that is improving and was much better in the last games. We found the way to win a tough game, which was so important for us. We had a contribution from all the players that we put on the floor, but the most important thing was that everybody understood the moment of the game, and I think that we deserved our success. I think overall we've done a pretty good job right now this season, but I also think we're getting better and that's the most important thing, because our first goal is to be qualified number one of our group but also to get better as a team."

Players

BOOKER, MELVIN
AJ Milano
"I think that we had a great game tonight, but we just missed too many open shots. We did a pretty good job in the first half and we started very well the third quarter, but then we had a lot of problems facing Loren Woods in the paint. But I am satisfied about my team, because we played with great energy and we are working good every day. We are becoming more competitive in both competitions, the Italian League and the Euroleague, and we have to be focused only about winning games and see what happens at the end."
GREGORY, KENNY
Efes Pilsen
"This is a big win for us. Everytime you win a game away is very important in the Euroleague. I think we started very slow this season because we have a lot of new players with a new coach, but we are getting better. Now we play every game with a great mentality and see what happens. Gallinari? He is an unbelievable player; he's got size, talent and I think he's going to be a great player. This is my second year in the Euroleague and I feel pretty good, because in this team I have a chance to win."
