The Take

Wednesday opens with another Istanbul derby with Anadolu Efes looking to close the gap from Darussafaka Dogus. Efes owns the all-time series in EuroLeague games between them 3-0 after an 79-84 victory in Round 4 in which DeShaun Thomas scored 17 points off the bench. Efes has sputtered recently as its only wins in the last seven rounds have come against bottom-placed Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul and it has fallen to 8-10. Darussafaka has won two in a row and five of seven to improve to 10-8. Among the key matchups will be a point guard, as both teams feature twin playmakers: Thomas Heurtel (13.0 ppg., 5.2 apg.) and Jayson Granger (3.8 apg.) fuel the Efes attack, while Brad Wanamaker (14.4 ppg., 4.2 apg.) and Scottie Wilbekin (11.7 ppg., 3.5 apg.) do the same for Darussafaka. Two-time EuroLeague Best Defender Bryant Dunston (10.1 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) teams with Derrick Brown (12.8 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) and Tyler Honeycutt (9 ppg., 8.0 rpg.) on the Efes frontline, which the visitors will counter with Ante Zizic, Adrien Moerman and Furkan Aldemir. Brandon Paul (11.8 ppg.) for Efes and Will Clyburn (13.3 ppg.) could engage in a crucial battle on the wings. Acritical area to keep an eye on will be perimeter defense; while Darussafaka has kept opponents to just 35.7% three-point shooting this season. Efes has allowed 41.0% success from downtown, which is the second-highest in the league. With Efes already in the bottom half of the league (35.6%) in three-point accuracy and Darussafaka (39.0%) in the top third, that could be a deciding factor.
