THE TAKE

A big fight in the upper part in Group A is scheduled in Istanbul, Turkey, for Wednesday when Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Montepaschi Siena. Fenerbahce comes off back-to-back wins to improve to 2-1 and hopes to keep its momentum going. It won't be an easy task, however, as Montepaschi is still undefeated and tied for first place with Regal FC Barcelona. FB Ulker is without Will Solomon, who has been released, and the injured Emir Preldzic. Mirsad Turkan is also a question mark. Head coach Bogdan Tanjevic may use Lynn Greer as his team's fulltime point guard, giving the team an experienced scorer and leader to lead the charge. Damir Mrsic provides deep range and experience off the bench. Greer has the tough mission to guard two-time All-Euroleague point guard Terrell McIntyre in arguably the key matchup in this game. Nikos Zisis is ready to come off the bench to share the playmaker duties with McIntyre. Fenerbahce will have to be ready to stop Week 3 MVP Romain Sato, who has been in outstanding shape recently. Without Preldzic around, sharp shooter Gordan Giricek and hard-nosed defender Rasim Basak will try to stop Sato. David Hawkins and Henry Domercant are ready to help Sato with the scoring duties. Hawkins is more explosive and is always ready to read the passing lines to collect a steal, while Domercant is an all-around scorer able to create his own shot. Domercant has an interesting matchup against Tarence Kinsey, while Hawkins will not have it easy against Omer Onan, who is always intense. The battle in the paint will be quite interesting. Montepaschi’s dynamic frontcourt is led by do-it-all big man Shaun Stonerook since Ksistof Lavrinovic is not expected to play at Abdi Ipecki this week. Benjamin Eze offers strength and athleticism at center, while Tomas Ress and Denis Marconato come off the bench, offering size and team-oriented mentality. Former Montepaschi forward and the Euroleague's all-time top rebounder, Mirsad Turkcan, is questionable for this game. Without him, Omer Asik must be ready for a strong test against Eze. Oguz Savas may have an advantage against Stonerook due to his size and post skills. At the same time, Stonerook can open the court with his shots from downtown. Semih Erden provides strength and rebounds. Fenerbahce must control the boards, get McIntyre into foul trouble and stop Sato. Meanwhile, Montepaschi must be its usual self in offense, with outstanding ball circulation, as well as getting all its stars involved.

GAME NOTES

Fenerbahce Ulker

Gordan Giricek swiped a career-high 5 steals in an 87-79 loss at Montepaschi Siena in the Top 16 last season.

Power forward Mirsad Turkcan played for Montepaschi Siena in the 2002-03 season. He helped the club reach the Final Four in Barcelona and was named the 2002-03 Euroleague Top 16 MVP and to the 2002-03 All-Euroleague Second Team. He was the MVP of the week in six out of the 21 games he played for Montepaschi that season and picked up 11 double-doubles.

Turkcan has scored in double figures in eight consecutive Euroleague games. He has made at least one three-pointer in each of those games.

Turckan, Lynn Greer and Montepaschi big man Ksistof Lavrinovic were teammates at Dynamo Moscow during the 2004-05 season.

Montepaschi Siena

All-Euroleague point guard Terrell McIntyre matched his career high with 6 three-pointers against Fenerbahce Ulker last season. He finished with 24 points and 6 assists in Montepaschi’s 87-79 Top 16 win in February.

McIntyre has drilled at least one three-pointer in 19 consecutive Euroleague games.

Ben Eze scored a career-high16 points on 8-for-11 shooting in Montepaschi’s 87-79 win over Fenerbahce Ulker in the Top 16 last season. He also had 5 rebounds and 4 steals en route to a career-best 21 index.

Eze continues to move up on the Euroleague career shot-blocking charts. He is now in 13th place with 77 career blocks, needing just 3 more to crack the top 10.

Center Denis Marconato tied Luis Scola for third place on the career offensive rebounding list last week with 276. Marconato needs 13 more to reach Kerem Gonlum for second place with 289. The all-time leader is FB Ulker’s Mirsad Turkcan with 337.

Henry Domercant needs made 2 three-pointers last week to crack the Euroleague career top 20. Domercant has made 168 triples in 90 career Euroleague games.

Domercant has made 30 consecutive free throws over his past 16 Euroleague games.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We will play the toughest game of our season until this moment. Montepaschi Siena is a very good example of a very good combination of talented and experienced players who are playing with each other very well."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"The roster of Fenerbahce is a big roster, a Final Four roster. They have a great coach, a very important club, so I think that this will be a great game for Euroleague fans. Now, we are not in an elimination game situation, but we play to make it through the first round. We arrive with three wins and Fenerbahce with two, so I think that every team now is focused only to improve its system and so I think it will be a really exciting game. We won twice last year in Istanbul, but every game is different and we can't look to the past. Every game is very tough, very close, and it will be the same also Wednesday."

Players

DOMERCANT, HENRY
Montepaschi Siena
"We know that, like every game in Euroleague, this one is going to be a tough match. I think that they'll have extra motivation to win after their tough loss against Efes Pilsen in the Turkish League. But also every game is like a final in the Euroleague, so we expect a very tough match. We know that every game is important, especially on the road, and we also know that this is also the most important match until now to reach first place in this round. I think that our team still has a lot of thing to get better at, but I feel we are starting to have more confidence every day. We still have some injuries, but we can play good basketball if we stay focused."
Terrell McIntyre - Montepaschi SienaIt took most of the night and most of its ingenuity, but Montepaschi Siena remained unbeated in Group A by outlasting Fenerbahce Ulker 83-87 on the road in Istanbul on Wednesday after fighting back for a second straight week from early double-digit deficits. Montepaschi improved to 4-0 going into a break week for all teams, while Fenerbahce fell to 2-2 at home despite a big effort. The hosts led by 11 points early, but by halftime were in a dogfight that Montepaschi settled with a 10-0 run led by Romain Sato midway through the fourth quarter. All-Euroleague point guard Terrell McIntyre paced the winners with 25 points in 22 minutes, including 5 three-pointers in 7 tries. Overall, Montepaschi shooters buried 13 of 26 from downtown, a big difference in the outcome, as Fenerbahce made only 5 of 11. David Hawkins added 15 pints for the winners, Henry Domercant 12 and Sato 10, including 5 in a row in the decisive run. Fenerbahce got 20 points from Tarence Kisney, while Lynn Greer added 17, Oguz Savas 14 and Emir Preldzic 10.

Fenerbahce went to big man Savas for the game's first basket, while Montepaschi waited for a Shaun Stonerook triple to take its first lead, 2-4. Both teams kept busy inside, with Erden finishing a pick-and-roll and an inbounds dunk at 8-6 before Sato's jumper tied it. Omer Onan answered from downtown and Erdin scored inside for a 13-8 Fenerbahce lead. The basket-trading continued between McIntyre and Greer, who exchanged both bank shots in traffic and face-up triples until a score of 18-16 Savas drew another foul and hit both free throws, Terence Kinsey hit a running one-hander and traded foul shots with Domercant, and then Omer Asik arrived with a basket. By the time Preldzic came off the bench for a baseline jumper and a put-back, Fenerbahce was rolling along with a double-digit lead, 30-19.

Oguz Savas - Fenerbahce UlkerDomercant started Montepaschi off right in the second quarter, but Gordan Giricek matched him. When Nikos Zisis drove strong for a basket-plus-free throw, the lead was cut to 32-26 and the Montepaschi defense was closing off the middle to Fenerbahce. Good ball movement left Stonerook open for his second three-pointer, then Zisis went to work again, driving to the basket to make it 32-31 after a 10-0 run by the visitors. After a tiemout, Greer and Kinsey gave Fenerbahce new breathing room, while Savas returned with an inside basket at 38-35. Montepaschi refused to go away, not even when an intentional foul and Serhat Cetin's tip-in made it 42-37. McIntyre answered with a triple, then Sato tied it 42-42 going to the hoop. But now it was Fenerbahce's turn to come up big, as both Cetin and Kinsey launched three-pointers to make it 49-45. McIntyre made the last minute count, however, with free throws and a put-back layup near the buzzer to cut the difference to 50-49 at the half.

To start the second half, a McIntyre layup gave Montepaschi its first lead since the game's opening minutes, and when Greer answered quickly, the visitors' All-Euroleague point guard has his own, a big triple from the top at 52-54. Soon enough, however, Savas was ripping an offensive rebound and putting it back for a new Fenerbahce advantage, 55-54. Kinsey found Savas for another layup, which meant that a triple by Montepaschi sub Tomas Ress was good for another tie, 57-57. Neither team was giving an inch now. More than a minute after a tiemout, Kinsey dropped a turnaround in the lane, but Domercant bettered it from the arc to put Siena back up, 59-60. Back and for they went, with Preldzic putting the hosts ahead on a nice cut, only to see Ress strike again from the arc and Sato from the baseline to make it 61-65 Montepaschi.

Domercan't tried to complete a momentum switch with a big triple to open the final quarter. After a timeout, the hosts went right back to Savas for a back-in jump-hook. It took a couple minutes of trying against the Montepaschi defense before Greer got to the line to make it 65-68 with 6 minutes left. Next, a Giricek-to-Savas-to-Asik sequence ended with a layup to make it 67-68, but seconds later Sato drilled a corner triple. He then stole and got fouled posting up, hitting both free throws at 67-73, which amounted to the biggest lead of the night for Montepaschi. After a timeout, the visitors stuck the knife in with a triple by Hawkins and his layup after a steal to make it 67-78 after a 0-10 run. Kinsey answered from downtown, then made an amazing drive left for a swooping basket and the free throw that came with it. Like that, it was 73-78 with 2 minutes left. Hawkins added a free throw to the lead before a pair by McIntyre and his patented pick-and-roll assist for a dunk by Ben Eze settled the matter in the final minute. Montpaschi was still undefeated after four weeks in Group A.

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Montepaschi Siena maybe had its best shooting percentage this season tonight. They are playing great this season and no one has beat them yet. They made a great number of shots from behind the arc. I'm already satisfied with the way we played against a team which is winning their games by mostly 25-point margin. We lost the game due to small mistakes. If we had been able to get 5 or 6 more rebounds or if we could have brought 2 or 3 thousand more fans into the gym, then we could have won the game. It was really sad that we are still missing our fans to come and support us in the Abdi Ipekci Arena."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"We didn't start the game well on defense. We feel the absence of Ksistof Lavrinovic especially in those moments. We were not able to play our regular rotation that we use to play in the paint because of his absence. But, when we recovered our offense, then we found the rhythm on defense. Our offense helped us to strengthen our resistance on defence. We conceded 22 points in the last quarter. But when you take away the points we conceded after we snatched the win late in the game, then you can consider that we did a great job. We are playing really good on the road. That's a good point and the key to our increased self confidence."

Players

ASIK, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We are all very sorry for the loss because I think we played a great game. But the small mistakes cost us a lot. We had a great start, but we knew that they would comeback. We tried to challenge as well as we can and pushed the game until the last five minutes. We made some easy turnovers, and they shot very well from the three-point line, which we couldn't balance tonight."
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Montepaschi Siena
"First of all, it was great once again to come back to Istanbul and to Turkey to play. We had a bad start, but it was the same scene last week against ASVEL Villeurbanne. We started bad in this game also, but we managed to come back. The key to the win is that we never gave up even when we got 10 points or more down just like tonight against Fenerbache Ulker. We made great shots behind the line, and I think this was the key to our win."
