THE TAKE

Montepaschi Siena will look to return to its winning ways when it hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday in Group A. The clash between the Italian champion and the Lithuanian champion sees a pair of teams that have won at home and lost on the road. Montepaschi opened the season with a 28-point blasting of Union Olimpija, but succumbed to mighty CSKA Moscow last week in Russia to fall to 1-1. Through two games, Montepaschi has been led by big man Ksistof Lavrinovic and guard Rimas Kaukenas. Ironically, the two are Lithuanian natives, and though neither has ever played for Zalgiris, they do know many of the players well. Zalgiris began its season with a loss at Virtus VidiVici Bologna before using a second-half explosion to blow by Prokom Trefl Sopot last week. Zalgiris's main force has been point guard De Juan Collins, while forwards Paulius Jankunas and Jonas Maciulis have been a fine tandem upfront. Zalgiris's depth is at the big man positions and accordingly the team leads the league in offensive rebounds and is second in total rebounds. However the team will be without one of its top inside forces, big man Tanoka Beard, who is not expected to travel to Siena after missing Lithuanian League and Barltic League games over the weekend. Montepaschi is tied for second in the Euroleague in defensive rebounding and is among the most efficient teams in terms of steals-to-turnover ratio. Several potential matchups could have big impacts on the game. One that stands out is with Zalgiris center Eureljus Zukauskas, who will have a distinct size advantage in the low post over Ben Eze, Lavrinovic and Tomas Ress, all of whom could see time guarding him. Another is on the wings, where Siena's Kaukenas, Romain Sato and Bootsy Thornton will challenge Marcus Brown, Mantas Kalnietis and Dainius Salenga. Montepaschi Siena turned in another spectacular home performance Wednesday to beat Zalgiris Kaunas 89-64.Tomas Ress came off the bench to lead five Montepaschi scorers in double figures with 16 points as the hosts improved to 2-1 before visiting Tau Ceramica next week for a big Group A clash. Zalgiris dropped to 1-2 and next week hosts Union Olimpija. Terrell McIntyre sparked a 16-0 run in the first quarter as the hosts took control and looked to coast to an easy win. Montepaschi led 43-29 at halftime, but Goran Jurak and De Juan Collins helped Zalgiris cut into the deficit early in the third period. The visitors fought their way back to within 55-51 and seemed to have a chance of doing even more damage, but Ramunas Kaukenas took over and Montepaschi started to pull away again. The hosts scored the first four baskets of the fourth quarter to essentially wrap up the game. Ress continued to our it on as the lead grew to 29 points and Siena celebrated the win. McIntyre scored 13 points and dished 5 assists for the Italian champs, Kaukenas added 12 points, Ksistof Lavrinovic and Romain Sato scored 10 each and Shaun Stonerook posted 9 points and 6 steals. Jurak led Zalgiris with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Marko Popovic scored 11. Zalgiris dominted the boards 26-45, but was undone by its 26 turnovers.
