Azovmash Mariupol scored a key win to increase its chances of advancing to the elimination rounds by topping Anwil Wloclawek 89-83 on Tuesday in Group D. Azovmash improved to 3-3, while Anwil dropped to 1-5 with its hope of competing for a spot in the next round suffering a critical blow. Anwil hung around for much of the game and trailed by only 3 heading into the fourth quarter, but led by Tyus Edney and Kris Lang, the hosts never faltered and outlasted Anwil for a key win. Yegor Mescherakou led the way for Azovmash with 17 points and 5 rebounds, Lang amassed 16 with 7 boards, Panagiotis Liadelis bagged 16, Edney 15 and Tomas Delininkaitis 10. Anwil Wloclawek got 20 points from Gerrod Henderson who hit 6 of 8 from downtown, Zeljko Zagorac nailed 17, Alan Daniels posted 15 with 8 rebounds and Alex Dunn had 15.
Panagiotis Liadelis scored 4 points for Azovmash as it took a 10-8 lead at the midway point of the first quarter, but the guests took their first advantage with Henderson hitting from downtown. Rodney Buford and Henderson exchanged triples as the game remained close. Tomas Delininkaitis scored the last 5 pointsof the period to give Azovmash a 25-21 cushion to after 10 minutes. Meshcharakou increased the difference to 33-27 early in the second quarter with a triple. After three scoreless minutes, Aubrey Reese added to the hosts’ lead. Dunn and Daniels answered for Anwil, but Liadelis re-established a 42-33 cushion. Delininkaitis hit from beyond the arc to give Azovmash its first double-digit margin, but Daniels fixed the score at 47-40 for the hosts at halftime. Daniels again cut the margin to 51-48 early in the third period, but Edney used his speed to score and draw a foul, converting the free throw and then adding a pull-up jumper to make it 60-50. Daniels sounded the charge for Wloclawek, which got within 60-55, and Zelimir Zagorac got the visitors within 65-62 at the third-quarter buzzer. Edney scored to start the fourth quarter and despite the best efforts of Andrzej Pluta, Lang and Liadelis gave Azovmash a comfortable 78-67 advantage, and Liadelis and Henderson swapped threes before Lang sealed the win with a three-point-play as Azovmash swept the season-series from Anwil.
