THE TAKE

Azovmash Mariupol has the chance to pull into a tie for third place in Group D as it entertains Anwil Wloclawek. Azovmash won a see-saw affair at home against Deutsche Bank Skyliners to improve to 2-3 - one game behind third placed SLUC Nancy. Coach Rimas Girskis's Ukrainian team committed just 11 turnovers and out-rebounded Skyliners 39-22 to remain alive for the elimination round. Center Robert Archibald paced Azovmash with 13 points and 10 rebounds while power forward Yahor Meshcharakou added 17 points as seven players scored at least eight points. But the team clearly still misses big man Serhiy Lishchuk, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds in Azovash's victory over Anwil in Week One. Lishchuk hasn't played since for Girskis's team. But Mariupol is beginning to find ways to win. Wloclawek will be hungry to beat Azovmash on the road after falling to 1-4 with a road loss at SLUC Nancy. Coach Ales Pipan's Polish team struggled to just 40% shooting from the floor and 64% from the foul stripe while getting out-rebounded 35-26 and allowing the French team to shoot 53% from the field. Power forward Zelimir Zagorac had 14 points while point guard Gerrod Henderson added 13 and guard Andrzej Pluta chipped in 12 points. Pipan's team will have to play better defense against Azovmash while also improving on the 35% it shot against Mariupol in Week One.

Yahor Meshcharakou - Azovmash Mariupol Azovmash Mariupol scored a key win to increase its chances of advancing to the elimination rounds by topping Anwil Wloclawek 89-83 on Tuesday in Group D. Azovmash improved to 3-3, while Anwil dropped to 1-5 with its hope of competing for a spot in the next round suffering a critical blow. Anwil hung around for much of the game and trailed by only 3 heading into the fourth quarter, but led by Tyus Edney and Kris Lang, the hosts never faltered and outlasted Anwil for a key win. Yegor Mescherakou led the way for Azovmash with 17 points and 5 rebounds, Lang amassed 16 with 7 boards, Panagiotis Liadelis bagged 16, Edney 15 and Tomas Delininkaitis 10. Anwil Wloclawek got 20 points from Gerrod Henderson who hit 6 of 8 from downtown, Zeljko Zagorac nailed 17, Alan Daniels posted 15 with 8 rebounds and Alex Dunn had 15.

Rodney Buford and Henderson exchanged triples as the game remained close. Tomas Delininkaitis scored the last 5 pointsof the period to give Azovmash a 25-21 cushion to after 10 minutes. Meshcharakou increased the difference to 33-27 early in the second quarter with a triple. After three scoreless minutes, Aubrey Reese added to the hosts’ lead. Dunn and Daniels answered for Anwil, but Liadelis re-established a 42-33 cushion. Delininkaitis hit from beyond the arc to give Azovmash its first double-digit margin, but Daniels fixed the score at 47-40 for the hosts at halftime. Daniels again cut the margin to 51-48 early in the third period, but Edney used his speed to score and draw a foul, converting the free throw and then adding a pull-up jumper to make it 60-50. Daniels sounded the charge for Wloclawek, which got within 60-55, and Zelimir Zagorac got the visitors within 65-62 at the third-quarter buzzer. Edney scored to start the fourth quarter and despite the best efforts of Andrzej Pluta, Lang and Liadelis gave Azovmash a comfortable 78-67 advantage, and Liadelis and Henderson swapped threes before Lang sealed the win with a three-point-play as Azovmash swept the season-series from Anwil.

We still have very many mistakes in defense, but I can say that today guys tried hard. And their wish for the game prevailed today. There were many failures on which we should work, but there was a wish to play. Concerning Chris Lang, I told him to be more aggressive and to be faster to make decisions. And you saw the results."

"First of all I have to congratulate the home team and its coach for the victory. We played a little bit better than the last two or three games. It is always hard to catch, to reach the home team. But three times we were very close and after we got closer one, two or three points, received easy three-pointers. We came here without two players, the first didn't receive a visa from the Ukrainian embassy, and the second is injured. Anyway, we have to forget immediately this game and start to be thinking about the next game. We’ll not give up till the end of this competition."
