THE TAKE

Two teams with different, decisive goals will battle each other in Poland on Wednesday when Asseco Prokom welcomes Regal FC Barcelona. Barcelona (7-1) leads Group B and will clinch first place if it beats Prokom. Meanwhile, Prokom (2-6) is in a direct fight with SLUC Nancy (2-6) and Zalgiris (1-7) to clinch the only remaining Top 16 spot from this group. Prokom cannot qualify this week, but a win against Barcelona would increase its chances to make it to the next round. Barcelona is in the midst of a five-game winning streak that started against Prokom. Even though Juan Carlos Navarro has been hampered by recent injuries, he should be ready to face Prokom. Meanwhile, Jaka Lakovic sat out in Barcelona's Spanish League home game against Tau Ceramica and may miss the game, too. If Navarro sees limited minutes and Lakovic is sidelined, a whole different rotation will be needed for head coach Xavi Pascual's team. Victor Sada and Andre Barrett are set to share the point guard duties, while Gianluca Basile and Roger Grimau could see more minutes at shooting guard, with Lubos Barton at small forward. Sada will face a big battle against Daniel Ewing, one of the most pleasant surprises in the Euroleague this season. Meanwhile, Basile and Grimau are ready to test their defensive skills against David Logan. Prokom can count on playmaker Aleksej Nesovic and three-point specialist Przemyslaw Zamojski coming off the bench, but Logan and Ewing are set to see most of the minutes in the backcourt. Meanwhile, Barton is set for a key matchup against Koko Archibong. Both teams are deep inside, as Barcelona features October MVP Ersan Ilyasova and former All-Euroleague center David Andersen as its main weapons. Ilyasova will have a big battle against Ronnie Burrell, while Andersen will test his shooting skills and strength against Pat Burke. Barcelona can play in a variety of ways, with center Daniel Santiago dominating in the low post, defensive ace Jordi Trias ready to stop Burrell, opening the court with Ilyasova or Andersen or improving its defense and athleticism with Fran Vazquez. Prokom counts on centers Adam Hrycaniuk and power forward Filip Dylewicz to offer strength, versatility and energy. Prokom must get Ewing and Logan involved and try to slow down the game tempo to grab a crucial win. Meanwhile, Barcelona must be its usual self in defense, with Sada and Basile ready to stop Prokom's superstars, as well as getting its deep frontcourt involved. Even though Barcelona is the favorite, Prokom is also with its back to the wall and will give 100% to get a big win.

GAME NOTES

Asseco Prokom
  • Big man Pat Burke was a teammate of Barcelona point guard Andre Barrett with Phoenix in the NBA during the 2005-06 season.
  • Burke recorded 18 points and 20 rebounds – both career-highs – in his last game before the winter break against Zalgiris.
  • Asseco Prokom leads the Euroleague in rebounding this season with 37.3 boards per game.
Regal FC Barcelona
  • Teammates David Andersen and Gianluca Basile are now the leaders for the most career appearances in the competition this decade with 166. CSKA Moscow guard J.R. Holden trails them by one game.
  • Big man Fran Vazquez has blocked 4 shots in a single game three times in his career. The first time came against Prokom in a February 2007 game. Vazquez recorded 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and the aforementioned 4 blocks in helping Barca to a 92-73 win.
  • Barcelona has never lost in five past meetings against Asseco Prokom and is 11-0 in the last 25 years against Polish clubs. The only time Barca has lost to a club from Poland was when it lost twice to Polonia Warsaw in its debut European season in the Champions’ Cup in 1959-60.

Quotes Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"I am really impressed by Regal Barcelona achievements this season. I can say that they are the strongest team in our group, as they defeated Panathinaikos twice and smashed Montepaschi by 26 points in the last game of the previous year. This is complete team; even their bench players could be stars in any club in Europe, so it is impossible to beat them when only two or three players play very good. Our plan is to fight - as a team - from the first until the last minute of the game."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"In a general way, we're looking to confirm first place in a definitive way. This game against Asseco Prokom presents us with the first opportunity to do so, but they are playing for something, too. It's their key game, and if they lose it, they'll probably have to say goodbye to the Euroleague. Unfortunately, we'll be missing Juan Carlos Navarro for the fourth or fifth time this season, but the team has been able to pull out games without him and I hope we can do so again. From the start, we knew that we couldn't depend solely on any one of our 13 players and the team is above that. Now, at least, we have Jaka Lakovic looking healthy. If he trains as well in Poland as he did in our last practice, he'll be able to play some and give the team things."

Players

DYLEWICZ, FILIP
Asseco Prokom
"If I wanted to point out the most dangerous players of Regal Barcelona, I could enumerate all the names from the roster. This is a legendary club and today they are definitely one of the hottest favorites of the whole competition. Our aim is different. We dream about the Top 16 but after two consecutive defeats our situation is not easy. We must seek a victory in each game, even against one of the strongest teams in Europe. We are playing in our own venue in Sopot and our fans will be - as usual - our sixth player. Beating Barcelona would be a great sensation. We will do our best."
LAKOVIC, JAKA
Regal FC Barcelona
"I am good, feeling better, and on Wednesday I can play and help the team a little. It will help me get my rhythm. Prokom is a solid team that has a high percentage of steals. They have players who are quick and score well, like Daniel Ewing and David Logan. Those two are the main players of the team. We'll try to stop them, and I think that can be the key of the game."
Roger Grimau - Regal FC BarcelonaRegal FC Barcelona became the Group B champion and clinched a top-seeded spot in the upcoming Top 16 Draw by downing Asseco Prokom 64-76 in Sopot, Poland on Wednesday night. Barcelona improved to 7-1 and clinched first place to its tie-break advantage against Montepaschi Siena and Panathinaikos, who face each other tomorrow. Meanwhile, Prokom dropped to 2-7 but keeps its Top 16 chances alive in a direct fight against Zalgiris Kaunas and Sluc Nancy. Roger Grimau and Ersan Ilyasova paced the winners each with 14 points while David Andersen added 12 for Barcelona. Ilyasova added 10 rebounds for a double-double. David Logan had 19 points for Prokom, Pat Burke added 13 and Daniel Ewing got 11. Logan and Ewing helped Prokom to get a 20-12 edge after 10 minutes. A turnaround jumper by Burke gave Prokom its biggest lead, 25-15. Andersen and an outstanding Grimau fueled a mamooth 0-18 run that allowed Barcelona to get a 35-40 halftime margin. A layup by Ronnie Burrell gave Prokom its last lead, 44-40. Fran Vazquez and Gianluca Basile rescued Barcelona while a layup by Andersen made it a double-digit game, 48-58, after 30 minutes. Prokom did not recover in the fourth quarter, allowing Barcelona to win Group B in style.

Regal FCB coach Xavi Pascual shocked everyone by placing little-used forward Jordi Trias in the starting lineup. Ilyasova got the guests going with a corner triple but Ewing answered from downtown for a 3-3 tie. Logan fired in a five-meter jumper, as Barcelona did not manage to adjust its defense. Meanwhile, Trias nailed a three-pointer but a power basket by Koko Archibong restored a 7-6 Prokom edge. Prokom had started to miss open shots but Barcelona lacked ball circulation. Logan took over with a reverse layup coming off the baseline and then followed Archibong's driving layup with a fast break dunk, making Barcelona call timeout at 13-6, after a 8-0 Prokom run. Ilyasova shined with a put-back layup that Logan matched with a long two-pointer. Andersen made free throws but Filip Dylewicz answered with a put-back dunk. A floating layup by Grimau against the hosts' zone defense and a dunk-and-foul by Przemyslaw Zamojski fixed the score at 20-12 after 10 minutes.

David Logan - Asseco ProkomJaka Lakovic buried a seven-meter bomb right at the start of the second quarter but Burke copied him in the other end and added a turnaround jumper to give Prokom its first double-digit lead, 25-15. Barcelona found a go-to guy in Andersen, who followed a jumper with a three-pointer to make Prokom call timeout at 25-20. Prokom lost control in offense, while free throws by Andre Barrett and consecutive layups by Grimau put Barcelona back ahead, 25-26. Ilyasova shined with a high-flying tip-in while Grimau added a three-point play, as Prokom kept struggling to score. Lubos Barton provided a highlight with a monster put-back dunk that capped a 0-18 Barcelona run. Prokom missed 5 shots and committed 5 turnovers until Zamojski buried a corner triple. Grimau made free throws and scored in penetration for a 30-37 score. Logan struck from downtown but Ilyasova answered with his second three-pointer. A driving layup by Logan got Prokom within 35-40 at halftime.

Logan came off a screen to bury a wild jumper right after the break. He followed it with free throws while Ewing added a triple to put the hosts back ahead, 42-40. Burrell capped a 9-0 run with a layup but Barcelona improved its defense while back-to-back dunks by Vazquez tied it at 44-44. Prokom called timeout to adjust its offense but a corner triple by Basile put Barcelona back ahead, 44-47. The guests had improved their intensity at both ends with Vazquez and Andersen together on court. Andersen nailed his trademark turnaround jumper to beat Prokom's zone defense, capping a 0-9 Barcelona run. Prokom could not find the way to the basket while Basile struck again from downtown to make it a seven-point game, 45-52. Victor Sada fed Barton for a fast break layup but Ewing answered with a three-pointer to give Prokom some hope at 48-54. Daniel Santiago shined with a jump hook while a layup by Andersen gave Barcelona a double-digit lead, 48-58, after 30 minutes.

Prokom needed a quick comeback to return to the game and Burke tried to ignite it with a three-point play early in the fourth quarter. Prokom was more aggressive in defense now but Ilyasova silenced the crowd with a triple that hit the rim, went up and fell down. Andersen soon gave Barcelona a 51-62 lead with under 7 minutes remaining. Burrell sank free throws while Ewing fed Burke behind-the-back for a layup. Basile, however, fired in another three-pointer to restore a double-digit Barcelona lead, 55-65. Time was running out of Prokom and Zamojski stepped up with a wild driving layup that Barrett bettered with one from downtown. Barcelona had already to use long possessions once the outcome was clear. By the time Barrett nailed another triple, Barcelona was already celebrating a key win, as the Spanish powerhouse will enter the Top 16 Draw as a regular season champion.

Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Regal FC Barcelona has for me the best European players nowadays. We had an excellent first quarter and start to the third quarter, but if you want to beat Barcelona, you must play almost perfectly from the first until the last minute of the game. In the fourth quarter my best players - David Logan and Daniel Ewing - were very tired, while Barcelona, having 12 excellent players, could rotate the roster and control the rhythm of the game. Nevertheless I am satisfied with my team and I still believe that we will play in the Top 16."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"I did not expect an easy game and I was right. In my opinion, Asseco Prokom is a very good team. I said before the game that they deserve to play in the Top 16 and now I can confirm that. We didn't play well in the first quarter. Our defense was very poor. We missed many open shots and committed 5 turnovers. Happily, my team improved its game at both ends little by little. This win is very important for us, as we clinched first place in Group B."

Players

SZCZOTKA, PIOTR
Asseco Prokom
"We lost the game because we lost patience and consistency in offense. After our good start, Barcelona scored 15 points in a row and in the second half and they controlled the game. I am very sorry after this game because I think that playing consistently we could have beaten one of the most famous teams in Europe."
BARRETT, ANDRE
Regal FC Barcelona
"Asseco Prokom had the crowd behind them and they started the game perfectly leading by 11 points. We came back by playing good defense for the rest of the game. It was the key to win."
