THE TAKE

Virtus VidiVici Bologna marks its long-awaited return to the Euroleague on Wednesday when it hosts Lithuanian champion Zalgiris Kaunas. Virtus, the 1998 and 2001 Euroleague champions, return to the continent's top basketball competition after four seasons away. The host club's fans know Zalgiris well as the team that denied Virtus a repeat of its first Euroleague title when the Lithuanians ran away with the 1999 title game. Zalgiris returns to the courts after a tough week-long trip to North America, where coach Rimantas Grigas prepared for the Euroleague season with three games against NBA opponents. Both teams are geared up for the upcoming season, but went about building their squads in much different ways. Virtus features a relatively young squad with a handful of players making their Euroleague debuts, while Zalgiris went for a veteran approach with experienced players who have been around the block before. One of them, Marcus Brown, could make some headlines with a big scoring night. Brown enters the game in second place on the all-time Euroleague scoring charts with 2,023 points, just 32 points short of regaining the top spot. If Brown is going to make a run at the record, he will need the cooperation of point guards DeJuan Collins and Marko Popovic, both excellent scorers in their own right. They will go up against a Virtus backcourt of Will Conroy, Dewarick Spencer, Fabio DiBella and Brett Blizzard. Delonte Holland and Guilherme Giovannoni make up a nice one-two punch at forward, while Luca Garri, Andrea Crosariol and Roberto Chiacig form the big-man rotation. Zalgiris's frontline is considerably bigger in more ways than one. Center Eureljus Zukauskas, standing 2.16 meters, anchors a group that also includes Tanoka Beard, Paulius Jankunas, Goran Jurak and Jonas Maciulis. Small forward Dainius Salenga also plays a key role on both ends of the floor. The battle between Conroy and Collins over which is able to control the tempo could prove decisive. The ideal style of play for the visitors is to crash the boards, score in transition and when that doesn't work, to use their size advantage to power up inside. However, with only Chiacig and Crosariol capable of matching up with the bigger Zalgiris guys, Virtus may try to shake things up and speed up the pace in order to neutralize the size issue. It will be interesting to see how the Virtus' newcomers react to the pressure that comes with a Euroleague home game and whether the Zalgiris veterans will have any tricks up their sleeves to affect them.

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"The Euroleague is a strong competition for everyone. Paradoxally, our group’s high level makes it even nicer to play for us. We are not afraid of anything, because we consider our Euroleague season as the opportunity to grow up and get experience. I don’t know how we'll react after our home loss in the Italian League, because a lot of players in the team play this competition for the first time. The first thing I said to them is that we are going to face the best teams in Europe, teams that are used to winning games in their national leagues. This winning attitude and mentality makes them even stronger. For us everything will be like a big party. We want to face it with a clear and open mind because it’s easier to play loose. After watching Zalgiris’s games so far, I can say they’re stronger than I expected during summer. They have a lot of experienced players, like Brown, Popovic and Zukauskas, who perfectly fit the system. To win the game we have to jump on them at the beginning, putting our intensity on the court. Intensity will be our key all the season long."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"We had a nice trip to the United States the last week, and showed that we can compete with NBA teams. Maybe those games made our schedule pretty difficult, but we hope that the trip won’t have a negative impact on our game this Wednesday. We came back home only on Sunday, but this was historical opportunity and we couldn’t reject it. We started preparing for the first Euroleague match while still in the U.S., working both on defense and offense. Once we came back to Lithuania, we started analyzing our opponents’ game and we hope we can set up our offense and defense in the right way to get a victory."

"It will be my first experience in the Euroleague and I am very excited. The competition has reached a very high level, a higher level than the Italian League. I don't have much experience outside my country, as I only played for Italy in the last World Championships and EuroBasket. Like me, most of my teammates are debutants in the competition. Our group is tough. You have to clinch the first five places to advance, but four of them look reserved already, by CSKA, Olympiacos, Tau and Siena in the pole positions. For that reason, the game against Zalgiris can already be a decisive one in order to clinch that fifth place. We want to take advantage of our home court and open the season with a win."
JANKUNAS, PAULIUS
Zalgiris
"We still feel a bit tired after long overseas trip, but everything will be normal when the game comes. I think it was a useful trip to the U.S., because we saw how the best competition in the world is organized. It was both a good experience for us as players and for Zalgiris as an organization to see how things are done there. But now the most important games are coming. We watched a few games of Virtus and this team left a good impression, because it has both shooters and slashers. They run the floor well, so it won’t be easy to win there."
Alan Anderson . Vidivici Bologna It was much like the good old times in Bologna, Italy on Wednesday as VidiVici Virtus returned to the Euroleague with an exciting 81-75 comeback home win over visiting Zalgiris Kaunas in the Group A opener for both teams. Virtus took over a tight game midway through the final quarter and made big plays like old pros down the stretch to deny Zalgiris. Alan Anderson made his personal Euroleague debut a memorable one by drilling 28 points while making 6 of 9 two-point shots, 3 of 6 triples and 7 of 8 free throws for the winners. Will Conroy was the other Virtus player scoring in double figures, with 11 points. Zalgirs got 15 points from Paulius Jankunas and 11 each from Jonas Maciulis and Dejuan Collins but got hurt by poor, 6-for-28 three-point accuracy (21%). One triple that fell for Zalgiris, by Dainius Salenga, tied the game 69-69 with 3 minutes left, but Andrea Crosariol's next basket started a 6-0 spurt that put Virtus in front for good.

Zalgiris Kaunas opened its Euroleague season in the right way as Paulius Jankunas grabbed an offensive rebounds scored and made an additional foul shot, too. After Giovannoni opened scoring for Virtus, Jankunas again had an easy layup to put Zalgiris up 2-5 after 2 minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers by Conroy tied the game at 7-7 and 10-10 for Virtus, but the guests kept leading the game as Dejuan Collins hit foul shots and Marcus Brown nailed his second straight triple to put Kaunas in front, 10-15, midway through the quarter. Running on turnovers by Virtus, Zalgiris maintained a five-point lead thanks to fastbreak baskets by Salenga and Collins that put the score at 14-19 after 8 minutes. The hosts responded before the quarter ended, however, as a put-back by Crosariol and a free throw by Alan Anderson trimmed the Zalgiris advantage to 19-21 after 10 minutes.

Paulius Jankunas - Kalgiris KaunasThe Virtus defense pumped up the volume to begin the second quarter as Luca Garri and Anderson exploited steals to put the hosts in front, 23-21, for the first time. After Anderson and Marko Popovic traded triples, Zalgiris took the lead again with an offensive rebound put back by Goran Jurak and another three-point shot by Popovic at 26-31. Fabio Di Bella's defensive efforts helped Virtus to block that Zalgiris run, but the hosts' offense could not take advantage as Zalgiris resumed scoring for its highest lead yet, 28-35, thanks to another offensive board from Jurak. Again, Virtus gave its best in the closing minutes of the quarter as Anderson scored diving for a loose ball and Guillerme Giovannoni hit a buzzer-beating triple to pull the hosts within 37-39 at halftime.

Anderson got Virtus going in the secondl half with a three-pointer that made it a one-point game at 40-41. Later, a layup by Roberto Chiacig put Virtus in front while Anderson, with a pull-up shot, lifted the hosts ahead by 46-43. Zalgiris resumed feeding the ball inside to Eurelijus Zukauskas and the big man made big plays on the way to a 49-49 tie midway through the quarter. Anderson's eighth point in the quarter and a dunk by Chiacig gave Virtus its highest lead so far, 54-50, before Zukauskas again took Zalgiris on his shoulders to keep the guests as close as 54-53. Zalgiris was inspired then to keep the rally going, using defense to take steals and rattle off back-to-back fastbreaks by Jankunas and Tanoka Beard. By the time Jurak downed more free throws, Zalgiris had a four-point lead, 57-61, after three quarters.

Will Conroy - VidiVici BolognaA high-altitude hook from Crosariol opened final quarter for Virtus, just before Anderson tied the game with a reverse layup, 61-61. Maciulis got a inside bucket and Collins hit a floater as Zalgiris took a new four-point lead, 61-65. Virtus, however, survived as Zalgiris missed a couple of open shots to tie it up 65-65 on Giovannoni's fastbreak dunk. Anderson added hit a pair of free throws before the Virtus double-teamed Beard to provoke a steal that Di Bella converted as another fastbreak, 69-65. After a timeout, Zalgiris posted a 0-4 run to tie again at 69-69 with a three-pointer by Salenga, but Virtus soon replied as Crosariol, Spencer and Anderson scored 6 unanswered points to fix a 75-69 scoreboard with 2 minutes on the clock. Zalgiris could not give up, however, and an amazing three-pointer by Popovic froze the Bologna crowd, while a free throw by Beard made it a two-point game again, 75-73 with 50 seconds to play. In the key possession, the best man of the night for the hosts, Anderson, took over the scene. His great assist to Spencer and 4 straight foul shots iced the outcome and let the Virtus crowd enjoy the best possible return to Euroleague Basketball.

Head Coaches

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"We played with a big desire to win, with heart and with team spirit. That helped us to stay close in the first half and to break the game in the end. We have had better intensity than Zalgiris, which remains a really strong team. Only playing team basketball could we beat them. Anderson had a big game. I don't remember a first-time in Euroleague guy playing like him tonight. It wasn't a spectacular game, but we played smart all night long."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"We lost because we took too many three-pointers in the crucial time. We took open shots, too, but we missed them. Maybe it was only the wrong night. The other thing I didn't like was our transition defense. We were ready for their rhythm and their game plan, but we didn't do what we prepared. It's our fault. We played too much run-and-gun style, and Virtus could play its basketball. We were a bit tired after the trip to the U.S., but it's not an excuse."

Players

ANDERSON, ALAN
Virtus VidiVici
"We felt the positive pressure of playing at home the opener in the Euroleague and we achieve our goal. In the first half, we allowed too many layups and that's why we trailed so much. Euroleague basketball is tougher and more physical than the Italian League, but I felt good. I am happy for the win and this will make us work to get tougher and tougher. Without Holland, all the players have stepped up to play better. That's why we did it."
BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"We lost the game on defense tonight. Our defensive transition was really bad and let them to score easy basket when we tried to run away. When you lose you have keep positive things and focus on negatives. One of them is our defense in the last seconds of the possession. We keep strong for 20 seconds but then we let them score easy shots."
