THE TAKE

Unics Kazan is among the top contenders for the ULEB Cup as it makes its their appearance in the ULEB Cup. After reaching the eighthfinals in their debut, coach Antanas Sireika guided Kazan to the semis last season before bowing out to eventual champions Real Madrid. Unis also reached the Russian league finals but were beaten by CSKA Moscow. Sireika's team has started well domestically and leading the charge are Dusko Savanovic, Jerry McCullough, Joseph Forte and Darjus Lavrinovic. Kazan start their Group I campaign at home against Zadar, who returns to the ULEB Cup after a two-year hiatus. Zadar has hit an early rough patch this season and coach Aleksandar Petrovic has made it clear that he expects more production of Shammell Stallworth. Todor Gecevski is the team's leading scorer with Corey Brewer doing the job at the point position. One advantage the Zadar players have is the wealth of big game experience from their coach, who along with his star brother Drazen won back-to-back Euroleague titles with Cibona in 1985 and 1986 and the 1987 Saporta Cup.

Head Coaches

SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Unics Kazan
"It is a pleasure to start the ULEB Cup with a victory. At the beginning everything was OK but we let the opponent get the freedom and they started to score. We missed the open shots."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Zadar
"It was a strange game. Our goal was not to let Kazan get the initiative, not to let Kazan make the big gap in score. In the second half we shot better. We played with character. I congratulate Unics."
