THE TAKE

A crucial Group A encounter will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Thursday when Union Olimpija hosts Prokom Trefl Sopot. Both teams are among four separated by one win for fifth place in the group – the last one that carries with it an automatic berth in the Top 16. Olimpija has been very strong at home this season, knocking off powers CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos earlier this season. On the other hand, Prokom's only win this season has come on the road. The Polish champs enter the game with a different look. Head coach Tomas Pacesas makes his Euroleague debut after taking over for Eugeniusz Kijewsk, while the team's top inside player, Tomas van den Spiegel, is sidelined. Accordingly, Prokom will look to its perimeter players, led by Milan Gurovic, DeJuan Wagner and Donatas Slanina to shoot their way through the Olimpia defense. Meanwhile the hosts, who have lost three is a row, have their biggest strength at the forward spots with former Prokom player Jasmin Hukic and team captain Marko Milic leading the team. The matchup between the explosive Milic and the high-scoring Gurovic could be one that the entire game revolves around. In the paint, Jovo Stanojevic becomes Prokom's prime threat, but he'll have to deal with a number of Olimpija defenders, including Hasan Rizvic, Chris Booker and Miha Zupan. Point guards Goran Dragic and Maurice Bailey plus wing Ronnie Taylor are the key pieces of the home team's backcourt, which will contend with Wagner, Slanina and Mustafa Shakur. After a coaching change and without a key figure like van den Spiegel, the visitors are sure to feel like they have their backs to the wall this week, which could result in a great performance. On the other hand, a win for Olimpija is a huge step forward in the battle for fifth place, as it would create a two-victory lead over Prokom, plus the team hosts its other rivals, Zalgiris and Virtus VidiVici Bologna, later in the season. The keys for Prokom are twofold: To have Stanojevic and perhaps even Tomas Masiulis create enough damage in the paint to open things up on the perimeter and for one of the team's shooting aces to get going. Meanwhile Olimpia, which is second in the league in fouls committed, will play its passionate style, looking to wear down Prokom's limited frontline and ride the energy from its fans to another big home win.

Quotes Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
“I know it is my debut as a coach in the Euroleague, but I'm not feeling something special about it. I don't feel nervous, but I realize, that we have to win this game if we think we can get to get to the Top 16. Olimpia is a real tough opponent at home, so we are expecting a hard game. We won't give up, we will be fighting. Unfortunately, we will go to Ljublana without Tomas van den Spiegel, but Dejuan Wagner will be ready to play.”

Players

Marko Milic - Union Olimpija Union Olimpija kept in touch with all-important fifth place in Group A at the halfway point of the regular season when it shut down visiting Prokom Trefl Sopot 68-49 on Thursday in Ljubljana, Slovenia. An active defense that limited the guests to no more than 15 points in any quarter lifted Olimpija to a 3-4 record, good for a fifth-place tie with Zalgiris Kaunas. Prokom couldn't give new head coach Tomas Pacesas a gift and fell to 1-6, alone in last place. Jasmin Hukic and Marko Milic again led the winners with 16 points each, while young Goran Dragic followed with 15, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Prokom couldn't find the basket all night, shooting under 35% from the field and getting to the foul line only 4 times total. Jovo Stanojevic finished with 13 points and Christos Harissis added 10 for the visitors, who played without injured center Tomas Van den Spiegel.

Christos Harissis hit the game's first triple to give Prokom an early lead, but his team would soon find scoring more difficult as Milic, Hasan Rizvic and Dragic, with a spectacular steal and fullcourt dunk, put Olimpija up 8-3. Stanojevic ended Prokom's drought with a pair of short jumpers, but Chris Booker hit his own and the free throw to keep Olimpija strong at 11-7. Krzysztof Roszyk, making his first Euroleague start ever, buried a corner triple for Prokom, and a minute later, Wagner copied him to tie it up, 13-13. Wagner then capped the quarter with a two-pointer as Prokom took a 13-15 lead after 10 minutes.

Filip Dylewicz - Prokom TreflOlimpija wasted no time reclaiming the lead as Hukic came in and opened the second quarter with back-to-back bombs from downtown. Maurice Bailey copied Hukic for the hosts, and despite Stanojevic's basket for Prokom, Miha Zupan made it 4 triples in succession for Olimpija, which suddenly boasted a 25-17 advantage. Mustafa Shakur of Prokom and Booker traded shots before Dragic downed free throws for the first double-digit lead, 29-19. Sasha Doncic scored 5 points to send Olimpija's margin as high as 12 points, although Donatas Slanina hit a triple for Prokom to trim the difference to 35-26 at halftime.

Prokom seemed poised for a comeback as Filip Dylewicz opened the second-half scoring with a tirple and the visitors' defense locked down Olimpija. Slanina canned a two-pointer next, then Stanojevic dropped in a basket, to make it 35-33. That's where Prokom's 0-7 run and Olimpija's four-minute scoring drought ended, however, as Hukic then blasted his third three-pointer, soon to be followed by a layup from Dragic. After Harissis and Dragic traded baskets, Dylewicz brought Prokom as close as 42-39. But Milic came on with 4 points for the hosts and Dragic buried another triple to make it 49-41 at the end of three quarters.

Hukic and Milic guarded the Olimpija lead with early baskets in the final quarter, and then the hosts did the rest on defense. A pair of early free throws by Slanina stood as Prokom's only points for 6 whole minutes until Stanojevic scored his team's first basket of the quarter. By then, Dragic had hit 2 more shots to put the hosts ahead by 57-43 and end all doubt in the matter. Hukic added a fourth triple to make sure and the only question was whether Prokom would reach 50 points. They didn't, marking the start of the visitors' hunt for a second-leg turnaround while Olimpija looks ahead to a Top 16 race.

PACESAS, TOMAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"Union Olimpija was the best team today and deserved to win the game. We did not that the way we should in the fourth quarter and our loss is bigger than the real difference between both teams. You cannot expect to win a Euroleague game with 19 turnovers."

Players

MOCNIK, JAN
Union Olimpija
"We won the game and this is what counts. We played very bravely and we won the game as a consequence. The winning margin is the real difference between both teams right now."
MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"It was a must-win game for us, and this is exactly what we did. We had a strong start in defense, even when our offense was not working well. Goran Dragic and Jan Mocnik stepped up in the most important moments and they showed how to fight for our club. They got the crowd involved with a couple of brave plays, too."
GUROVIC, MILAN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"Without any kind of doubt, Union Olimpija deserved to win the game. Now that we have no options to make it to the Top 16, we must change some aspects of our game."
DYLEWICZ, FILIP
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It was a close game for three quarters, but we could follow Union Olimpija's game rhythm in the last 10 minutes. Olimpija played very aggressive tonight and our shooters did not have their best night."
