THE TAKE

A critical Group A matchup with long-term implications on the race for Top 16 takes place at the S.Darius & S.Girenas Sports Center in Kaunas, Lithuania, on Thursday in Group A when Zalgiris hosts Virtus VidiVici Bologna. This season’s celebration of 50 Years of European Club Basketball will mark the game with a pregame ceremony, in which Zalgiris stars over the tears, Eurelijus Zukauskas, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Saulius Stombergas, Modestas Paulauskas and team president and former All-Euroleague center Arvydas Sabonis will be honored. Zalgiris is coming off a big win over Tau Ceramica last week, that saw the club climb to 3-4 and a tie for fifth place in the standings – the last spot that brings with it automatic passage to the next stage. The Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer, Marcus Brown, stood tall once again with 27 points, making 6 of 6 from downtown, to lead the Lithuanian champs. Zalgiris is undefeated this season at home, with Brown averaging 27.5 points on 81.2% three-point shooting and 2.5 steals in the last two victories. Brown is also 21 for 21 from the free-throw line this season. Meanwhile Bologna, which beat Zalgiris 81-75 on opening night behind Alan Anderson’s 28 points, enters the game at 2-5 and would overtake Zalgiris due to head-to-head tiebreaker with a win this week. Both teams have undergone changes since that game, with the addition of center Michael Bradley being the biggest change for Zalgiris, while Virtus has added Donnie McGrath and made Fabio DiBella the starting point guard. Zalgiris’s biggest strength this season has been its inside play, as the team leads the Euroleague in rebounding. Meanwhile, despite DeJuan Collins being ranked second in the league in assists, the team attack committee more turnovers than any other. On the other hand, Virtus has become so dependant on the play of its high-scoring wingers ability to create for themselves and to shoot from outside that it is ranked last in assists, second-bottom in two-point shooting and tied for fourth in turnovers. Nevertheless the game will hinge on how the trio of Delonte Holland and Dewarick Spencer, both among the league’s top 10 scorers, and Andersen are able to produce against Brown, Dainius Salenga and Jonas Maciulis. The duel between Collins and DiBella at the point guard spot is also critical, while veteran center Roberto Chiacig, shot-blocker Andrea Crosariol and power forward Guilherme Giovannoni will challenge Bradley, Zukauskas and Paulius Jankunas in the paint. Zalgiris remains the favorite in front of its passionate fans, but if ever there is a team that can see a few guys get hot and carry their squad, it’s Virtus. The defensive of abilities of the Zalgiris perimeter players will be tested, though the hosts could counter attack through Brown and Marko Popovic, in a game that could play out in many different ways, each more exciting than the next.

Quotes Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"Virtus has made some changes since our last meeting and now they play differently. They use a lot of non-standard schemes, also improvise well. I would single out three Americans – Holland, Spencer and Anderson, who are the most dangerous players. They take lots of responsibility on their shoulders, can hit three-pointers. Maybe this team is a little bit weaker in the paint. We are highly motivated to take this win since we play at home and we lost them in Bologna. Not all of our players are healthy at the moment – Salenga has back spasms, Jurak has problems with his knee. But if we manage to win this one, it would be huge motivating factor for our team."
PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
“We feel that if we want to advance, we are forced to win in Kaunas. If we beat Zalgiris, we are 2-0 against them and it’s a big step towards the qualification. That’s a big chance. We don’t want to overlook it and we will try to play in the best way possible. We leave Bologna for five straight days, because we will get to Varese directly from Lithuania. It will be like a short training-camp and that’s what we need now. We are searching for continuity and concentration. For us, the Sunday game is more important that the game against Zalgiris, but this is an appointment we cannot miss. Even though we lost two straight games by 20 points, I don’t think our team is lacking energy. We are working quite well, considering many players are not accustomed to playing twice a week. We are waiting for Travis Best, because he can add experience and charisma to this roster. We need a guy like him.”

"We feel good after a win against Tau, because everytime you win against a team like that, you get a confidence boost. Bologna is a good team, having smart guards and solid big guys. Overall it's a solid team, it's hard to pinpoint just one guy. It's our philosophy not to lose at home, and we will have to win on Thursday to improve our record. As time goes, I feel better and better in Zalgiris. I'm not looking too far in the future, I’m taking it week by week, but we all hope we can advance to Top 16."
CHIACIG, ROBERTO
Virtus VidiVici
“Zalgiris Kaunas is one of the three teams we are fighting against in the race for the fifth place. Our goal is to clinch that, because it is difficult to qualify as the best sixth-place team in such a talented group. This game will be key for us, as will the games against Union Olimpija and Prokom Trefl. We will enter the court with the right concentration, because it is like our last chance to stay in the race. In the opener against Kaunas, we played one of the best games of the season, but many things have changed from that day: Strange situations, with players in and out, added problems. Now we have all the players and we are seeking a big concentration, because we already missed chances. We believe in the qualification and we want to fight until the last week. This game is a test we cannot fail.”
DeJuan Collins - Zalgiris Kaunas Marcus Brown matched his Euroleague career-high with 31 points as Zalgiris Kaunas remained perfect at home this season with a 102-82 victory over Virtus VidiVici Bologna on Thursday at the S. Darius & S. Girenas Sports Center. The Lithuanian champs improved to 4-4 in Group A and join Olympiacos in a tie for fourth place. The evening began with a salute to former Zalgiris greats as part of Euroleague Basketball's season-long 50 Years of European Club Competitions celebration and the current players made the former heroes proud with a fine performance. Brown made 7 of 9 three-pointers and finished with 31 points to match his career high set nearly six years ago. Jonas Maciulis added 13 points, Michael Bradley 12, De Juan Collins scored 11 points and dished 8 assists and Paulius Jankunas finished with 10. Dewarick Spencer led Virtus with 22, Delonte Holland scored 15 and Andrea Crosariol posted 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Maciulis got Zalgiris going with a three-pointer, but Virtus reacted immediately and Alan Anderson drove inside to give the guests their first lead at 3-4. Brown matched him with nice penetration, but Fabio Di Bella silenced the crowd with bomb from downtown. Brown found his way for another basket and tied the score at 9-9. Eurelijus Zukauskas blocked a shot and Maciulis converted it into two-handed dunk at the other end. Virtus turned to Crosariol, who scored in transition, before Di Bela added an acrobatic layup to get within 15-13. Collins stepped up and drove for a basket, but Crosariol matched him with put-back basket. Brown paced Zalgiris with a long jumper before Bradley hit a layup on the offensive boards. Crosariol beat Bradley one-on-one, but he had his revenge in the same situation on the very next possession. Collins’s drive resulted in a three-point play that gave Zalgiris a double-digit lead and Marko Popovic buzzer-beater from near mid-court gave the hosts a 30-17 advantage after 10 minutes.

Dewarick Spencer - Virtus VidiViciZalgiris started the second quarter with sticky defense and Goran Jurak hit a layup before Mantas Kalnietis slammed home a spectacular dunk off his own steal. Virtus continued to stumble against the Zalgiris defense, while on the other side Zalgiris’s showtime attack flourished as Jurak hit a jump hook and Dainius Salenga made one of two free throws that extended the gap as wide as 39-18. Virtus continued to play individually on offense and couldn’t score from the field until Donnie Mc Grath drilled a three-pointer. However Bradley answered immediately and Popovic added 2 free throws. Maciulis showed that he can play every position, scoring 4 points playing as center in the paint before Popovic penetrated through the Virtus defense for a layup. Virtus tried to run its offense through Spencer, who launched a triple. Holland tried to step up and drive inside, but found nothing but an offensive foul, but Zalgiris didn’t convert it into the points and left the court with solid lead halftime lead, 51-32.

Zalgiris opened the second half behind 4 points by Jankunas, but he collected 2 fouls in less than minute and headed to the bench as Roberto Chiacig made both free throws. Zalgiris, however, didn’t slowed down its offense as Brown nailed a three and fed Zukauskas for a dunk. Collins penetrated for a layup before Virtus answered with back-to-back baskets, but Brown remained hot and connected from downtown. Brown exchanged a few words with the referee and received a technical foul, but Virtus converted it to only 1 point. The visitors tried to stop Brown by double teaming, but it didn’t stop Zalgiris’ best offensive weapon as he drilled another difficult three that pushed Zalgiris ahead 69-43. Collins nailed a fade-away jumper from the left wing, but it was Brown who charged the crowd with yet another triple. Crosariol broke the dry spell with a difficult layup, but the Brown show continued over and over as he launched another incredible bomb from the downtown and the hosts led 83-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

Luca Garri scored and Spencer added a jumper, but Virtus could not compete against Brown, who hit two more triples before heading to the bench. Spencer seemed to be the only player who refused to quit and he drilled a triple that reduced the margin to 89-59. Kalnietis dished to Bradley for a layup and even a 0-10 Virtus run, featuring a nice two-handed dunk by Crosariol, a basket by Spencer in transition and a basket Federico Lestini, wasn’t enough to threaten Zalgiris. Salenga struck back with three that cooled off Virtus and allowed the hosts to celebrate another home win.

Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"It was one of those games that everything just goes right. At the end of the game we let off a little bit, but a win is a win. We are not very hyped about this victory because it’s not the last game of the tournament. We have to think and prepare for the next game. However victory was very important for us. Now we see in our future more opportunities. My players showed that they can play and they can play very strong. Our offense ran well because our defense was working out right tonight. I was not surprised by Brown’s performance because we knew he’s a terrific shooter."
PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"It was an easy walk for Zalgiris. After such a game, all I can say that we weren't prepared to play on such a level. We looked like a rookie team. We have a lot of players that lack experience and there were moments that they just didn't know what to do. It's the first season in the Euroleague for many of them. We lost this game in the first half. Especially demoralizing were those incredible shots by Brown and Popovic. We played a bit better in the final quarter, but it was much too late for a comeback."

Players

ZUKAUSKAS, EURELIJUS
Zalgiris
"It was great game. We had some emotional boost because of all ceremonies here in Kaunas. It was little bit hard to start the game because we were a little off rhythm. But it's easy to win the game when you have Marcus Brown in your lineup. He was amazing tonight and hit almost every single shot. If he will continue play like that, I'd rather stay on defense all the time because there is nothing to do on the offense when he plays like that. He was a real factor tonight."
BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"We came in really focused. Guys were very focused and I think we played really well tonight. We were really aggressive offensively and defensively. I think our big guys played absolutely phenomenal. I am proud of them. We rebounded the ball extremely well. The good thing is that we still have room to improve. Today the second unit played very well in the second quarter. We just had to be more focused in the fourth quarter."
HOLLAND, DELONTE
Virtus VidiVici
"We came in aggressive, but things didn't go our way. They had some great individual performances, hitting some difficult shots. We lack composure and staying together when the crowd gets into the game, when the situation gets difficult. We have to stand focused and in the system. I don't want to take anything away from Zalgiris, but I think we played really bad today. They were really patient on offense. They found open shots. They looked really relaxed and that's very important when you play in the Euroleague. Even when they were up by 20 points they still stayed relaxed. Marcus is an incredible player and he played fantastically tonight."
