THE TAKE

Spirou Basket hosts Spartak Saint Petersburg in what promises to be one of the most closely fought contests between two teams with such different records. Spartak enters at 2-1 in second place in Group E while Spirou is in fourth place at 0-3. And if you also consider that last week in Saint Petersburg Spirou fell 80-69 to Spartak, it might seem like a stretch to claim that Spirou has much of a chance to get back in the race for the elimination rounds on Tuesday. But three factors indicate that Spartak may not have such an easy time in Belgium as it did at home: first, Spirou has its backs to the fall and should play loose and with nothing to lose; second, Spirou can count on the support of its home fans; and third, in its loss last week, Spirou missed a whopping 12 free throws, which, if they had made them, the game would have probably been a nail-biter instead of a comfortable win for Spartak. The main individual match up to watch will be at the forward spots between Spirou’s Dwayne Broyles and Nick Jacobson and Spartak’s Milovan Rakovic and Yahor Meshcharakou. Broyles was unstoppable last week, scoring a game-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and 4 assists, and Jacobson proved to be a reliable sidekick with 11 points and 3 assists more. Rakovic and Meshcharakou combined for nearly 30 points to pace Spartak to the win. There also promises to be an interesting rematch of a great battle between backup centers. Last week, Spartak’s Goran Suton had a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards while Andre Riddick scored 13 points and pulled in 8 rebounds for Spirou. And in the backcourt, Spirou’s Justin Hamilton will try and handle Spartak’s Zahkar Pashutin and Aleksey Zozulin. In their previous meeting, Spirou lost the game despite winning the battle of the boards, 38-32. If Spirou can shoot better from the line and continue to outrebound Spartak, it may very well finally get in the win column and revive its chances for advancing.

RAKOVIC, MILOVAN
Spartak SPB
"It will be an important game for us. We want to go to the next round of the competition, that is why we want to win in Charleroi. It won't be an easy thing for us. Though Spirou lost all 3 games, they are not weak. They will be stronger at home than in St.Petersburg. If their players who didn't come to Russia due to injuries are recovered now, they will also help their team very much. Besides this a lot of fans will support Charleroi and they'll try to do all their best to win. But it doesn't mean that we won't fight. We prepared for this game very hard and now are ready to fight."
James White - Spartak St. PetersburgSpartak St. Petersburg took a huge 50-68 away win over Spirou Charleroi on Tuesday in Group E to make a big step toward booking a spot in the Last 16. Spartak is now in second place in the group with 3-1 record, while Spirou remains last with a winless record. Spartak heads to Turkey to face Turk Telekom after the break knowing that it can advance with a win. A 4-17 run for Spartak bridging the second and third quarters gave the guests a big margin that Spirou was unable to recover. James White led all scorers with 20 points, Yahor Meshcharakou added 13 and Milovan Rakovic had 12 fort he winners. Nick Jacobson and Justin Hamilton netetd 10 apiece for Charleroi.

Dwayne Brolyes capped a 7-0 run for Spirou to start the game, but after five minutes Meshcharakou converted an offensive board to keep Sartak close at 9-6 and later he finished a break to tie the score at 10-10. A three-point-play by White gave Spartak its first lead, 13-15, before Jacobson from mid range made it 15-16 at the end of the first quarter. Spartka climbed to 15-21 early in the second quarter thanks to Meshcharakou. Broyles boosted Spirou from beyond the arc for the 21-23, but White, assisted by Aleksandr Dedushkin, threw down a slam for a 22-27 advantage to the guests. A 0-7 run highlighted by a three pointer and a assist from veteran guard Zakhar Pashutin gave Spartak a double-digit margin, 26-36 as the second quarter finished.

A shining start for Spartak back from the lockers gave to the guests a 27-41 lead. Levance Fields scored his first 2 points of the night as the margin reached 30-46 before Jonathan Tabu tried to sound the charge for Spirou from downtown. Spartak rushed to close the contest and Evgeny Kolesnikov scored from mid range to make it 35-58 before Jure Lalic fixed the score at 37-58 when the third quarter finished. Spirou made a big defensive effort in the last quarter and got as close as 45-58 with four minutes left till the final buzzer, but Spartak rejected their comeback attempt with baskets from beyond the arc by Kolesnikov and Fields to put the win on ice.

Head Coaches

BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Spirou Basket
"We are very disappointed tonight, because I hoped for a reaction from my guys after three defeats. Some players must score in my team, but they missed their mission. I don’t know if it's a question of confidence, like our percentage on free throws in the first half, finishing 10 points behind. We were short of enthusiasm in the second half and Spartak controlled the rebounds. It's difficult to retain anything positive, except 20 good minutes for Tabu, who came back from an injury. At the present time, we don't have the level of this competition."
SHERF, ZVI
Spartak SPB
"This victory is very important for us, maybe the key for qualification. At the same time, Bilbao won, so that’s another satisfaction. We played well in offense in the second and the third quarters. It was enough, but I can't explain what happened in the last one. We must improve in the next games, even if our defense was good tonight with only 50 points allowed to our opponent."
