The Take

Visiting Efes needs a road win in Greece to guarantee itself second place in Group B, while Olympiacos has already locked up first place. An Efes loss will knock it to third place, which would also set up two more Olympiacos vs EFes meetings in the Top 16. It will be the league’s best defense against its best shooting team. Olympiacos is second in the league in points allowed (67.9 ppg.) and first in opponents true shooting percentage (42.9%). Efes enters Round 10 atop the charts in both three-point shots made (98) and accuracy (46.9%). The Reds bring a seven-game winning streak to the game, which includes an 87-91 overtime victory over Efes in Istanbul last month. Daniel Hackett had perhaps his best game for the Reds to date with 11 points and 8 assists in that game. Hackett could play a key role again for Olympiacos alongside Vangelis Mantzaris, D.J. Strawberry and Ioannis Athinaiou against the core of Efes’s perimeter attack, Thomas Heurtel, Jayson Granger and the league’s leading three-point marksman, Jon Diebler. Those three are among five Efes scorers averaging double-figures in points; forwards Dario Saric and Derrick Brown are the other two and will also create headaches for Georgios Printezis and Ioannis Papapetrou. The Reds may give recent signing Shawn James more time inside against former Olympiacos star Bryant Dunston and the hosts will also take it easy with their recently injured players to have everyone in peak form before the Top 16 begins.

Game Notes

Olympiacos Piraeus

Georgios Printezis has scored in double figures in 12 straight Euroleague games.

Printezis’s best scoring night in the Euroleague came against Efes in Game 1 of the 2013 playoffs when he scored 26 points on 4-of-7 three-point shooting to lead the Reds to a 67-62 victory.

Printezis has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last five Euroleague games.

Vassilis Spanoulis needs 3 more three-pointers to become the 10th player in competition history to make 300 career triples.

Spanoulis is 7 steals shy of becoming the 12th player in competition history with 200 career steals.

Vangelis Mantzaris needs 3 more three-pointers to reach the century mark for his Euroleague career.

Ioannis Athinaiou has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last six games; he is shooting 11 for 21 from downtown (52.4%) in that stretch.

D.J. Strawberry and Efes guard Jon Diebler were teammates last season at Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir. They helped the team win the Turkish League championship.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul

Anadolu Efes leads the league in both three-point shots made (98) and accuracy (46.9%) through Round 9.

Coach Ivkovic coached Olympiacos for a total of five seasons in two different stints. He guided the Reds to the 1997 and 2012 Euroleague titles. In his most recent period with the club, Ivkovic coached current Olympiacos players Vassilis Spanoulis, Georgios Printezis and Vangelos Mantzaris.

Thomas Heurtel leads the Euroleague lead through Round 9 with 8 assists per game.

Heurtel needs just 2 more assists to become the 18th player in competition history to reach 500 career assists.

Jon Diebler leads the league in three-pointers made through Round 9 this season with 28; he has made multiple three-pointers in all but one game this season.

Jayson Granger has made at least 1 three-pointer in 10 of his last 11 Euroleague games.

Dario Saric has made 15 consecutive free throws in Euroleague games.

Saric was a teammate of Olympiacos swingman D.J. Strawberry doe two seasons between 2012 and 2014 at Cibona Zagreb.

Birkan Batuk is averaging 11.3 points on 69.2% three-point shooting (9 of 13) on the road this season compared to 2.8 points on 37.5% from downtown (3 of 8) at home.

Bryant Dunston reached the Euroleague Championship Game last season with Olympiacos. He played a total of two seasons with the Reds, during which he won the 2013 Intercontinental Cup and the 2015 Greek League and was twice named Euroleague Best Defender.

Dunston was a teammate of Olympiacos forward Michalis Tsairelis at Aris Thessaloniki during the 2010-11 season.

Quotes Head Coaches

Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We will play against Olympiacos on the road in the last game of the regular season. This is a big challenge for me and for the players. It will be a very competitive game. We had a good game against Laboral Kutxa last week. Olympiacos is one of the best defensive teams in Euroleague. They are in second place among 24 teams in this category. For that reason we need to be very well prepared and must have a good game control. At the moment we have no serious injuries. Definitely I expect a very good game on Friday."

Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It is a very important game for us. The last game before the Top 16... We must build momentum and play one very good basketball game. We know that we are going into a tough atmosphere. We have to be focused and very well concentrated for the game only. Hopefully we can build on a brilliant performance. Our placement depends on how we play this game. Because of this, we will try our best to win."

Anadolu Efes wins in Piraeus to claim second place in Group B

Anadolu Efes Istanbul secured second place in Group B by knocking off Olympiacos Piraeus 68-81 on the road. Dario Saric collected 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Thomas Heurtel had 13 points and 5 assists to lead Efes, which improved to 6-4 for the second spot in the group. Derrick Brown chipped in with 10 points while Alex Tyus had 9 points and 2 blocks in the victory. Olympiacos had already locked up first place in the group, but saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in falling to 8-2 despite 19 points from Daniel Hackett. Georgios Printezis and D.J. Strawberry both scored 10 points in the loss.

First quarter: Anadolu Efes pulls away late with 2-9 run

Olympiacos coach Giannis Sfairopoulos made no change to his starting line-up with Strawberry, Vangelis Mantzaris, Printezis, Ioannis Papapetrou and Nikola Milutinov. Anadolu Efes coach Dusan Ivkovic made three changes to his first five with Jayson Granger, Furkan Kurzmaz and Saric coming on for Heurtel, Birkan Batuk and Brown alongside Jon Diebler and Tyus. Granger scored the first points of the game on a lay-up with Strawberry evening it with two free throws. Saric and Kurkmaz both knocked down three-balls as the guests went up 2-8. Mantzaris nailed Olympiacos’ first basket - a three-pointer to make it 5-8. Two Saric baskets were sandwiched around a Papapetrou dunk after a pass from Othello Hunter. But Bryant Dunston scored two straight baskets inside against his former team as the lead grew to 8-16. Strawberry got a shot to go in off the glass to trim the gap to six points. But Dunston made one free throw, Brown scored a driving layup and Heurtel knocked down a jumper as Anadolu Efes was leading 10-21 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Efes bench scores 13 points

Batuk opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to extend the advantage to 14 points. Hackett scored five straight points for Olympiacos and Shawn James got a tip-in and Mantzaris nailed a three-pointer and one free throw to get the deficit down to 21-28. Brown threw down a nice lefty dunk after a pass from Heurtel but was answered at the other end with a dunk from Milutinov. After Granger got the margin back to double-digits with a three-pointer, Printezis raced out on the break for a lay-up to make it 25-33. Heurtel followed with a jumper and then Brown put back an offensive rebound and set up a big alley-oop drunk for Tyus as the advantage swelled to 25-39. Printezis and Hunter scored for Olympiacos to trim the gap to 29-39 and the score was 29-40 at intermission following Tyus’ free throw.

Third quarter: Olympiacos unable to make run

Hunter started the second half with a massive dunk to get the game into single digits. Kurkmaz followed with a three-pointer but Printezis answered right back with a long ball of his own to make it 34-43. Saric got a lefty hook to fall and Cedi Osman scored a lefty lay-up to push the lead to 35-47. Batuk and Osman added three-pointers as the bulge grew to 38-53 - and an Olympiacos time out. Two Heurtel free throws and a Tyus dunk kept Efes up 15 points until Hackett hit one free throw and Strawberry scored a lay-up to make it 45-57. Heurtel answered with a three-ball but Strawberry scored another layup and then tossed up an alley-oop pass for Hunter to get the gap to 49-60. Tyus put back a miss and Heurtel scored off the glass to push the lead to 51-64. But Ioannis Athinaiou threw up a three-pointer just before the third quarter buzzer to get the hosts within 54-64.

Fourth quarter: Reds never get closer than 8 points

Diebler started the fourth quarter by setting up a Tyus alley-oop and Hackett scored Olympiacos’ first points in the quarter. A Hackett three-point play trimmed the lead to single digits - 59-68. But Diebler nailed a corner jumper and then a three-pointer to increase the margin to 59-73. Olympiacos had one more push as Hackett converted another three-point play and Papapetrou nailed a three-pointer to cut it to 65-73 with four minutes to play. Olympiacos however failed to convert on its next three possessions and it was 65-77 after a Saric put back and two Saric free throws with three minutes left. Two Printezis free throws and one from Hackett trimmed it to 68-77 inside the 2-minute mark. But Mantzaris, Papapetrou and Hackett missed their next shots and the hosts had to settle for the loss.

Head Coaches

Olympiacos Piraeus
“Congratulations to Anadolu Efes, because they dominated the game from the beginning and got a fair win. We didn’t have concentration and allowed them to grab seven offensive boards in the first quarter. We knew that Efes is a team that runs the court, but we didn’t manage to react. I think that we weren’t mentally ready to play that game and although we cut the margin to eight points, we didn’t manage to go closer and win it. Olympiacos has to fight in every game and this performance doesn’t correspond to what we have done so far. Some players have to understand that when you play for Olympiacos, you have to try hard and give everything you can in every game. This is a warning message for them. Now we are entering to the Top 16 and must change our mentality, otherwise we will not succeed in our goal. The whole team has to fight in every game and try to win. If the opponent is better, let’s lose, but I don’t accept not trying. Sorry to say that, but with such a performance, we can’t go on. Our group in the Top 16 is very tough and extremely challenging. We have to keep our concentration, play our usual game and if it happens, there is no reason for us to be afraid.”
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"I am very happy to be back in Piraeus where I feel like at home. I think we played better and got a fair victory. We played good defense and controlled the game for 40 minutes. Olympiacos tried to come back with their defense and I have to say that they are a totally different team with Spanoulis and Lojeski. I wish them the best and I believe that they will have good results in both the Greek League and the Euroleague. Regarding our team, the target is to get better results than we had last season. The problem is that we have long and difficult trips in the Top 16. I think my team is ready for the Top 16. We will have to fight in each game."

Olympiacos Piraeus
"It has been tough from the beginning to the end. We tried to come back, but it didn't work out. Now we have to forget about what happened tonight and try to play the best we can in the Top 16, which will be very tough. I think that every team can beat anybody there and this is a big challenge for all of us"
Olympiacos Piraeus
"It is not a good night for us. Unfortunately we were not focused and missed lots of offensive boards. Anadolu Efes is a very good team and they have improved their game recently. The Top 16 is expected to be an extremely tough competition and our group has some of the top-level teams. We have to work harder and be ready to play against them. I am not worried because I trust my team, coach and teammates"
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We played bad and we are all sad not for the loss, but because we didn't follow our plan and allowed Anadolu Efes to play their game and dominate. I think that our basic problem tonight was mental and has to do with the lack of concentration. They netted 81 points which is too much for our defense. Coach Sfairopoulos was very upset and he is right. We are looking forward and I am sure that we will have a much better performance during the Top 16."
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We needed this win to get the best possible position, which is the second place, and I am very happy to have it. Olympiacos missed very important players like Spanoulis, Lojeski and Agravanis, but we played a very solid game and deserved to win. I have to share the playing time with Derrick Brown and I have no problem in that. The most important thing is to win and advance."
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We are playing pretty well recently, and the victory here is a clear proof of that. I like our team and I am optimistic that we can reach the goal we set for the Top 16, which is a new and extremely tough competition. I feels good to be back [in Piraeus] and there is no doubt that Olympiacos, where I spent two seasons, will be forever in my heart"
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"Olympiacos is a very tough team. We knew we have to come out and play one of our best games and head into the Top 16. We wanted to get some momentum going for us. "
