THE TAKE

Cedevita hosts KK Hemofarm on Tuesday in a crucial Last 16 matchup in Group I. Cedevita (2-2) could clinch a quarterfinals berth with a win over Hemofarm (1-3), which has lost three straight games after opening the Last 16 with a home win over Cedevita. The teams are familiar foes who have also met twice this season in the Adriatic League. Hemofarm recorded a win in its only visit to Cedevita, 89-97 in October behind 21 points from Boris Savovic, so head coach Zeljko Lukajic has reasons to be confident. Cedevita has rebounded from a poor start to the Last 16 with back-to-back wins over Gran Canaria 2014. The team set a Eurocup record with 35 three-pointers in its last two games. The stars of the last two wins have been forward Damjan Rudez and Bracey Wright. The duo shared Last 16 Week 4 MVP honors after Rudez also notched the award in Week 3. If Hemofarm can keep at least one of them under control like it did in Week 1, the sky could open up for the visitors. Center Jerome Jordan was the anchor of Hemofarm’s attack last time around and could be the focal point in this one, going against powerful Corsley Edwards in the paint. Edwards should also get help from forward Vedran Vukusic and Rudez on the boards, and has the competition’s assists leader in point guard Dontaye Draper, who can also fill it up on any given night. Defensive stalwart Mustafa Abdul-Hamid will probably draw the assignment on Draper, while Miljan Pavkovic will again hold the keys to Hemofarm’s offense, in an effort to get forwards Savovic, Milos Borisov and Mladen Jeremic some quality looks. With center Ivan Maras and forward Milivoje Bozovic beefing up the trenches, the visitors can more than hold their own against the likes of Edwards and multi-skilled forward Vedran Vukusic. The battle between veteran guards Marino Bazdaric and Bojan Krstovic should also be interesting, as both are long in the tooth and could emerge as key contributors in this high-pressure matchup. Cedevita has been lighting it up from beyond the arc lately, especially with Wright and Rudez, and Marko Sutalo can also score from the perimeter, so Hemofarm will have to adjust to its pick-and-roll game in order to challenge one of the hottest teams in Europe right now in its own building.

Quotes Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"We are in front of a historical moment because a victory will push us among eight best teams in the Eurocup and this is our first season in this competition. Hemofarm is a very strong team who beat us twice this year, but we won the last game in the Adriatic League in Vrsac, so we know how to make our dream real. They have a fast team with lots of three-point shooters, and we need to play strong defense. I hope that the gym will be full and crowd and with that extra player we can make move to next level."

"At the start of the season nobody beleived that we could make it this far, because we are a young club and we made it to the game that can earn us a berth among the best eight teams. We have a chance to accomplish a historical feat for the club and we are ready. Hemofarm is a good team, but we must present strong defense, lots of running and good shooting which is our best weapon. I hope that fans will come to support us, not only our fans. I hope Cibona and Zagreb fans will come too because this is important not only for us but also for Croatian basketball."
Corsley Edwards - Cedevita (photo kkcedevita.hr)Cedevita hung on for a tough 73-71 victory over Hemofarm Stada that sends the team through to the Eurocup Quarterfinals in the club’s debut season in the competition. Corsley Edwards scored 17 and grabbed 7 rebounds and Dontaye Draper added 15 points and 7 assists to pace the winners, who improved to 3-2 in Group I. Cedevita started strong with the game’s first 9 points, but Hemofarm fought back and head coach Aleksander Petrovic’s side trailed by 7 midway through the second quarter. Hemofamr led 42-44 at the half, but a 17-5 third-quarter blitz gave Cedevita the lead for good. Hemofarm crept within 1 in the final minute of the game, but Cedevita held on for the victory. Vedran Princ added 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting, while Damjan Rudez, the Eurocup Last 16 Week 3 and Week 4 MVP, cooled down a bit, but still offered 7 points and 5 assists for the winners. Mladen Jeremic scored 15 to lead Hemofarm, which dropped to 1-4 and hosts Gran Canaria 2014 next week hoping to avoid finish last in the group. Miljan Pavkovic added 14 points, Milos Borisov had 10 and Milivoje Bozovic tallied 9 points and 13 rebounds in defeat.

Cedevita got just the start it wanted, with Draper leading the charge on both ends and Bracey Wright teaming up in the backcourt to get the ball to Edwards inside for a 9-0 start. Hemofarm made a quick substitution to get Bozovic in and Pavkovic soon found him for the visitors’ first points. Jeremic got involved as Hemofarm trimmed the gap to 13-11. Rudez tallied his first points from a pair of free throws midway through the opening quarter and soon Draper with a dish to Edwards and a three of his own had the hosts up 21-12. However the trio of Jeremic, Bozovic and Pavkovic brought Hemofarm right back. A Pavkovic triple made it 25-24 after 10 minutes. Bozovic gave the visitors their first lead at the start of the second quarter and son Bojan Krstovic and Pavkovic drained threes in a 0-8 push that made it 27-34. A three from Vedran Vukusic and good work inside from Edwards kept Cedevita close, but Hemofarm continued to generate points. Rudez’s first three of the night only brought the hosts within 42-44 at halftime.

Both teams came out for the second half bearing down on defense, which is why a Pavkovic free throw was the only point of the first three-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter. A Bozovic slam lifted Hemofarm to 43-47, but Cedevita responded quickly. Edwards capitalized on Draper’s missed free throw for a basket and Princ sank a second-chance three as the hosts took the lead. Ivan Maras kept Hemofarm close, but a three-point play by Edwards kept the momentum with Cedevita and Draper capped a 17-5 blitz with a triple before Borisov scored from the line to make it 60-54 heading into the fourth quarter. Princ continued his hot shooting with a three to open the final stanza, but Borisov matched him for Hemofarm. Jeremic and Pavkovic further trimmed the deficit before Boris Savovic scored his first points on the offensive glass to make it 66-63 midway through the fourth quarter. Wright stepped up with a pair of important scores for Cedevita, but Jeremic came up huge to keep Hemofarm in the fight. Mustafa Abdul-Hamid made it a 1-point game in the final minute. Marino Bazdaric put the hosts up 73-71 and Abdul-Hamid was unable to convert in the last second a shot that would have forced overtime, instead ceding victory to Cedevita, which marches on to the Quarterfinals.

Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"We could not win this game by playing like we played during this whole season, as was demonstrated during the first half, when we had big problems. Corsley Edwards turned the thumb of his right hand in the second offensive possession and he got two finger jams. We were too nervous during first half and wanted to solve everything on offense. I have to commend the night of Marino Bazdaric, who gave us a great contribution both on defense and rebounds."
LUKAJIC, ZELJKO
Hemofarm Stada
"Congratulation to Cedevita. We have a young team and I do not object to my players. We have big problems with the ball in the post and we miss the type of player we used to have with Milan Macvan. We could also use a good playmaker like Dontaye Draper in Cedevita."

Players

BAZDARIC, MARINO
Cedevita Zagreb
"After a good start and leading 9-0, we let them to get back into the game by our mistakes. However, in the second half, a completely new team went out on the court. I congratulate my teammates and our coach on this historical success."
JEREMIC, MLADEN
Hemofarm Stada
"Cedevita was the great favorite. We came to try to surprise them. I regret that we weren't able to win, but we can be proud of our game during this 40 minutes."
