The Take

Looking to turn its last win into another positive streak, CSKA Moscow (13-4) welcomes Brose Bamberg (7-10) to the Russian capital on Thursday. This will be the 14th time that these teams meet in EuroLeague play, with CSKA ahead in their head-to-head by a landslide (12-1). The last time they met was in December, when CSKA barely survived in Bamberg, 88-90, thanks to a Vitaly Fridzon jumper on the buzzer. Milos Teodosic had his best scoring night of the season with 31 points for the winners, while December MVP Nicolo Melli had 26 for Bamberg. EuroLeague MVP Nando De Colo is the main man for CSKA (19.3 ppg., 3.4 apg.) and gets big help from Teodosic (16.9 ppg., 7.6 apg. to lead the overall assists ranking) and Cory Higgins (9.7 ppg.). For Bamberg, Darius Miller leads the attack (13.2 ppg.) followed by Melli (12.6 ppg., 8.4 rpg. to lead the overall rebounds ranking) and Janis Strelnieks (11.9 ppg., 3.4 apg.). CSKA boasts the best offense in the league (89.1 ppg.), while Bamberg ranks a bit lower with almost 9 points less per game. The German champs are one of eight in the competition that allows less than 80 points per game (79.0) and CSKA receives a basket more on average (81.7). The hosts just came out of a bump on the road in which they dropped three straight games and plan to continue rolling like they did before that happened. With more than 20 assists per game (second overall), CSKA showcases its versatility on offense, always looking for different options that can win a game, especially from the three-point line, as the team leads the league in that category (41.9%). Bamberg snapped a winning streak last week at Kazan, and now will try to bounce back again in Russia. The German champion tops the rankings in two-point shooting (55.1%) just over CSKA, and if the first game between both teams serves as a reference, the hosts will have to stay focused until the final buzzer to stop a hungry opponent that punishes relaxation like no other. CSKA starts it all from its duo of superstar guards in the backcourt, and stopping them will be the job of veteran Nikos Zisis and Strelnieks. On the other hand, CSKA will have to step up in the paint to stop a force like Melli and his teammates Daniel Theis and Miller, a job that will fall on the shoulders of Kyle Hines and team captain Victor Khryapa mainly. Expect a game that is more than meets the eye.
