THE STAKES

This unprecedented matchup features Serbian point guards – Aleksandar Rasic and Vule Avdalovic – both of whom played for Partizan Belgrade. Lawrence Roberts played for Partizan in the Euroleague Final Four and faces off against Ivan Radenovic, another ex-Partizan player from Serbia. To complete the Serbian subplot, Rytas coach Aleksandar Dzikic is a former Partizan assistant coach, and Sasa Obradovic, is a former Crvena Zvezda player and Serbian National team member. Rytas has only lost two games so far, both against Lokomotiv Kuban, and never scored less than 78 points at home. Donetsk has also lost only twice, but is unbeaten at home.

THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas is the leading team in rebounding (38.3 rpg), but Donetsk ranks third (36.6). The duel at point guard between Tyrese Rice and Vule Avdalovic will be critical, as both will try to dictate the game tempo and can light up the scoreboard from downtown. The hosts can also turn to Rasic for firepower off the bench. At center Jonas Valanciunas and Viacheslav Kravstov will put their size and skills to the test in a tough duel under the glass, as will Ivan Radenovic and Lawrence Roberts, both very experienced players. Both sides are adept at a team-oriented game, so details will make the difference.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"I cannot name it the most important match of the season, because we played a number of important matches so far, it is also necessary to remember that it is not the end of the season. Yes, it's an important match, but not the most important. Donetsk is a very experienced team, which is represented by six foreigners, as well as good players from Ukraine. We will be ready for their pressure defense systems. Surprises may be forthcoming from all Donetsk players, it depends on different things."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"First of all, I want to say that I have full confidence in my players, who will give their best in the next two games against Lietuvos Rytas. Everyone understands what these games mean for the club and their careers and everyone has his own way to prepare for such important games. We need to be focused and patient in Game 1. We have to be patient on offense to avoid mistakes and find good shots - it would be the perfect tactic for this game. Coach Dzikic is very experienced and I am familiar with him, we have met many times. I know what kind of games he likes. His teams are always tough on defense, especially in frontcourt positions. They will be tough and aggressive at both ends and we will have to control that."

Players

SEIBUTIS, RENALDAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We already had practice against their defense and attack systems. Our coach Dzikic said that Donetsk is very strong with high-level basketball players and a good coach. Donetsk defends and fights hard, and will not be easy. The game result will lead to many factors. We will start from defense, all of 40 minutes we will be focused and strive for a positive result. The main thing - winning, and only then - points difference."
RADENOVIC, IVAN
BC Donetsk
"It will be a tough game, but we have our chances to advance and will do everything we can to go to the Finals. Of course, the matchup against Jonas Valanciunas will be interesting. He is a very talented big man - obviously. We will have to pay a lot of attention to him and try to stop him. He is doing really well in a small amount of minutes, putting out good numbers. We will have to do whatever we can to stop him or limit him. I know some of their players really well. I don't think there will be a lot of surprises."
Arturas Jomantas - Lietuvos Rytas (photo bc.lrytas.lt)Lietuvos Rytas opened its drive for the Eurocup Finals on the right track by defeating BC Donetsk 76-65 at home on Tuesday in the first game of their two-game, total-points quarterfinals series. Steponas Babrauskas scored 15 points, making 3 of 6 shots from downtown, and Jonas Valanciunas produced a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Rytas will advance to the next stage with a win in next week’s deciding fixture – or a loss by fewer than 11 points. Trailing the entire game, Donetsk pulled to within 22-20 in the second quarter and 63-59 in the fourth, but Rytas always had the answer. The hosts tallied more rebounds, two-point attempts and assists, adding up to overall dominance. Ivan Radenovic led Donetsk with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ramel Currey, Vojdan Stojanovski and Vule Avdalovic contributed 10 points apiece.

Scoring opened slowly as Arturas Jomantas gave Lietuvos Rytas a 6-4 margin at the first quarter's midpoint. After the Lawrence Roberts of Rytas and Vojdan Stojanovski of Donetsk exchanged baskets, Jomantas buried a triple to increase the lead to 11-7. The hosts stayed in control, reeling off a 7-2 run, featuring a three-pointer by Renaldas Seibutis, to the end the first quarter with an 18-9 lead. Mindaugas Katelynas hit a running one-hander along the baseline for Rytas early in the second quarter. But then the Avdalovic scored 5 points on a triple and layup for the visitors, Radenvoic hit 2 straight two-pointers as the visitors cut the deficit to 22-18. Avdalovic added 2 free throws, but the hosts scored on a put-back by Roberts and a mid-range jumper by Babrauskas at 26-21. After Darnell Jackson scored in low, Babrauskas finished off a steal with a layup and Lawrence added foul shots, pushing the Rytas lead to 32-23. Stojanovksi knocked in a two-pointer and Michael Lee foul shots for Donetsk, but Valanciunas hustled for a basket on offensive glass to keep the hosts out front 36-27. The teams exchanged points in the remaining 2 minutes as Rytas maintained a double digit lead, 41-31, at the half

Seibutis and Valanciunas opened the third quarter with consecutive layups for Rytas while Dmytro Gliebov downed a layup and Stojanovski drilled a three-pointer for Donetsk, moving the score to 45-36. Jomantas nailed a baseline jumper then Tyrese Rice went coast to coast as Rytas boosted the difference to 49-38. After Igor Boyarkin finished off a fastbreak dunk, Babrauskas buried back-to-back three-pointers to give Rytas its biggest margin of the game, 55-40. Viacheslav Kravtsov and Lee scored layups, trying to spark a Donetsk comeback, but Babrauskas hit a mid-range jumper to maintain a comfortable 57-44 lead. Ramel Curry found the range from downtown and Avdalovic added free throws for Donetsk, but Katelynas answered with a baseline jumper as the third quarter ended with Rytas still up big, 61-49. Foul shots and a six-point burst by Radenovic, including a three-pointer, opened the final quarter, cutting the difference to single digits 61-54. After an exchange of points, Curry drained a triple to bring Donetsk even closer 63-59. Rytas got its answer from Jomantas, who knocked down a basket in the paint, and from Roberts, whose deep two-pointer helped Rytas run away again, 69-59. Donetsk continued to push closer, however, as Curry's mid-range bank shot and free throws from Radenovic again cut the deficit to 69-63, however Seibutis and Katelynas answered with consecutive two-pointers for a new double-digit lead, 73-63. The game ended with back-and-forth scoring as Rytas made sure of a sizeable margin, 11 points, heading into next week's rematch.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"It was just the first half of the series. We know Donetsk is very strong at home, in Ukraine, so the tough part is still waiting for us. This was the kind of game we expected, really. It was tough because you need to stay focused for all 40 minutes. Yes, 11 points is a solid advantage, but we still have to play a very good game in Ukraine. Our goal should be not to defend the advantange we have, but to simply win the game."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"The final score was decided by a couple of turnovers on the defensive end. We couldn't switch to their guys in time which allowed Lietuvos Rytas to convert enough easy baskets. For example, we, of course, knew Babrauskas to be a good shooter but we still let him shoot. Eleven points is a solid margin, but we have already cut it once this season, against Khimki in the Last 16. Let's just wait and see, but for now Lietuvos Rytas is holding the cards."oi

Players

BABRAUSKAS, STEPONAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"It was a tough game emotionally because Donetsk will still have a game at home and we just had our last one. We wanted a bigger margin and were close to getting that, but they stepped it up at the necessary moment. Nevertheless, I think we just have to win in the Ukraine and everything will be alright."
AVDALOVIC, VULE
BC Donetsk
"I have to congratulate Lietuvos Rytas; they were the better team tonight. We had our chance when we had cut their lead to as few as 4 points, but then we turned the ball over a couple of times. We'll draw the needed conclusions and try to improve our game next Tuesday."
