THE TAKE

Union Olimpija will host Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv for its last Euroleague home game of the season on Thursday at Tivoli Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Olimpija (3-9) rocked Unicaja 87-59 in its last home games, before undergoing big changes. Gone are captain Marko Milic and guard Ender Arslan and in their place veteran power forward Goran Jurak and combo guard Slavko Duscak have arrived. They will try to turn things around for the club that was crushed at Partizan 106-60 last week. Maccabi (7-5) will be able to clinch second place in Group B with a victory in Ljubljana if DKV Joventut also loses at Cibona. Maccabi has only one road win all season, but is still the favorite at Olimpija, whom it defeated 110-87 in Tel Aviv earlier in the season. The game features an interesting matchup at guard, where Maccabi's Yotam Halperin will square off against his former team and teammate Teemu Rannikko. Halperin and Rannikko made up the starting backcourt at Ljubljana last season and were the team's top two scorers. This year Rannikko is averaging 13.8 points and 3.3 assists - the best numbers of his career to date - but Halperin has posted only 7.8 points for Maccabi. The key to the Maccabi attack is center Nikola Vujcic, whose amazing form has him ranked second in the league in scoring (17.9 ppg.), fifth in assists (4.4 apg.), seventh in rebounding (7.8 rpg.) and eighth in blocked shots (1 bpg.). Olimpija will use a center-by-rotation effort with Hasan Rizvic, Saulius Kuzminskas and teenager Kamil Pietras hoping to slow down the Maccabi star. Olimpija wing players Manu Markoishvili (9.8 ppg.) and Domen Lorbek (7.5 ppg.) will need to score to help the hosts keep pace with the Euroleague's highest-scoring team (89.9 ppg.) On Maccabi's perimeter, sharp-shooting Simas Jasaitas (12.3 ppg., 51% 3FG) and explosive Will Bynum (11.9 ppg.) are the starters while Tal Burstein and team captain Derrick Sharp (11.3 ppg., 60.5% 3FG, 1.7 spg.) come off the bench. In the frontcourt, Maccabi's Lior Eliyahu (11.7 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) and Jamie Arnold (7.9 ppg., 4.6 rpg.) will challenge Olimpija's Ivica Jurkovic (9 ppg.) and newcomer Jurak. As it showed against Unicaja, Olimpija is capable of great things at home, but if they want to spoil Maccabi's chances for second place, the hosts will have to deal with Vujcic first and foremost.

Quotes Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"A difficult game, our last at home in the Euroleague, awaits us. There's no need to talk about which team is the favorite in this game, because we all know what the name of Maccabi means in European basketball. Even though this season Maccabi isn't playing at the same high level as in recent ones, I am sure that this team, too, will be among the main candidates for the Final Four in Athens. We want to say goodbye to our loyal fans with a good showing. I am sure our players will do everything possible not to disappoint the audience."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Like always, we are prepared for the game. It's a very important game for us because I think with this win we have a very big chance to take second place in the group. We had two big chances to win on the road, in Roma and Badalona, but we lost both, so now I hope it's going to be much better for us. I don't care if Olimpija lost its chance to qualify to the Top 16. At home, Olimpija is a completely different team, but now they are playing without pressure because they have nothing to lose. All we need to care about is how we are going to play and what we are going to do. Will Bynum is sick and we're not sure he's going to play, but we are always short one player in the rotation. Before it was Tal, so it's not going to be the first time we play without a player."

Players

JURKOVIC, IVICA
Union Olimpija
"That we cannot reach the Top 16 doesn't mean that we won't give our maximum to surprise Maccabi. It's not every day that you have a chance to play a team of such quality and it would be beautiful to finish the season at home beating such a big club. We'll have to be focused for 40 minutes and try to take advantage of their weaknesses."
SHARP, DERRICK
Maccabi Elite
"Tomorrow, the game is definitely in our hands. It's up to us usually. We just have to go out there and take care of business. Ljubljana is one of the hardest places to play in the Euroleague. Every year it's difficult for us over there. Hopefully, we'll make it easier and get this win we need so much."
Domen Lorbek - Union Olimpija Teemu Rannikko's runner with a second to go gave Union Olimpija a stunning 77-75 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday night at Tivoli Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Maccabi led by double figures in the first half and held a 32-42 halftime lead, but fantastic outside shooting led the Slovenian champs back. Rannikko and Manu Markoishvili starred in a 14-0 fourth quarter run that put Olimpija in control, but Maccabi fought back and Nikola Vujcic tied the game with a triple with 17 seconds remaining. The game looked destined for overtime, but Rannikko's heroics gave the fans what they wanted at the end of regulation. The win saw Olimpija improve to 4-9 in a game where three players made their debuts with the team. Maccabi dropped to 7-6 and missed a golden opportunity to seal up second place in Group B. The Israeli champs fell to 1-6 on the road this season. Domen Lorbek led Olimpija with 17, Rannikko added 16 and 4 assists, Markoishvili and Ivica Jurkovic scored 13 apiece, and Goran Jurak scored 12 and grabbed 6 rebounds. Captain Derrick Sharp paced Maccabi with 18, Vujcic finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists, Lior Eliyahu added 12 and Simas Jasaitas tallied 9 points and 10 rebounds. The visitors, who were without the ill Will Bynum, cleaned up on the glass (17-37), but committed a dooming 18 turnovers. Olimpija went 12-for-29 (41.4%) from downtown – a big part of their big win.

Maccabi won the opening tip, but more than a minute went by before Vujcic scored the game's first points from the line. Olimpija came right back via a Lorbek triple as the offenses warmed up. Eliyahu was active for Maccabi with a pair of baskets and a free throw, before completing a three-point play for a 5-10 lead. Rannikko drilled a triple, but former teammate Yotam Halperin answered in form for the visitors. Vujcic then scored twice underneath, increasing the Maccabi lead to 8-17 and causing Olimpija to call timeout. Despite poor shooting by both teams, repeated offensive rebounds helped Maccabi take the lead to double figures. Lorbek made a fine penetration move and followed it with a jumper to show that Olimpija was fighting. Eliyahu went to the line once more and made one, but with Vujcic resting on the bench, the Maccabi offense stalled and Rannikko's second three was followed by Markoishvili to make it 18-20 after 10 minutes.

Nikola Vujcic - Maccabi EliteRannikko spotted an open Hasan Rizvic for a dunk to tie the score early in the second period. But Rannikko soon committed his third foul and took a seat on the bench. Tal Burstein put Maccabi on top once more with a jumper, but this time Lorbek's triple made it 23-22 for Olimpija. The lead went back and forth a few times until Burstein was whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul on Jurak, who tied the game at 27-27 from the line. Baskets by Eliyahu and Burstein hinted at some Maccabi momentum, but Sandi Cebular came right back with a triple. Free throws by Burstein were followed by Jamie Arnold's first basket to put Maccabi up 8. Rannikko picked up his fourth foul on the offensive end in the final minutes of the half and Halperin fed Arnold for a score as time expired to make it 32-42 at halftime.

Jurak's layup got things going in the second half. Rannikko and Jurkovic brought Olimpija within 6, but Vujcic went behind the back to Simas Jasaitas. Rannikko answered from downtown to make it 41-46, but Burstein's three kept Maccabi comfortably ahead. Jurkovic penetrated the Tel Aviv defense to make it 45-51 midway through the period. Sharp fired in a three after a Maccabi timeout, but a red-hot Jurkovic did the same. Markoishvili then blew past Burstein for a basket and foul and Jurkovic scored another basket to close the gap to 53-55. Maccabi used a second timeout, after which Arnold drew a foul and made a free throw. Markoishvili's long jumper cut the difference to 1 point, but he then committed his fourth foul on Arnold, who made two from the line. Abdul Mills made his Euroleague debut in Markoishvili's place, but little happened before the third quarter buzzer sounded with the visitors leading 56-58.

The fourth quarter got off to a slow start, before Sharp's runner nearly two minutes in put Maccabi up 4. Lorbek's triple gave the fans a rise, but Jurkovic then fouled Vujcic, giving the hosts four players with four fouls. But it had no effect as Jurak fired in another Olimpija three to give the hosts their first lead of the second half. But Olimpija was just getting started. Rannikko drilled another three, Markoishvili added a long jumper and then the team's 12th three of the night as Olimpija completed a 14-0 run for a 70-60 lead. Maccabi called timeout after which Vujcic scored inside, but Lorbek's layup showed that the hosts wouldn't crack. Jasaitas scored from the line and Sharp hit a three to cut the deficit in half with 3 minutes remaining. Jurak made and then missed a free throw, but Olimpija was first to the rebound and the hosts started looking to drain the clock. However Sharp made it just 73-70 with 1:14 left and Jurak fouled out crashing the offensive glass after a Lorbek miss. Jasaitas's free throws made it a one-point game with 46 seconds to go. Lorbek spun Vujcic around to put Olimpija back up by 3, but Vujcic tied it with a triple with 17 seconds on the clock. The game looked like it was headed to overtime, but Rannikko killed the clock and went in for the game-winner in the final seconds, scoring a short jumper to the delight of the home fans in what will be their final home game of the Euroleague season.

Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"This game has served to demonstrate that Union Olimpija is a quality team. This victory is everybody's, each and every player who got in the game and gave his maximum. To beat a European giant like Maccabi is the ideal way to say goodbye to the Euroleague in front of these phenomenal fans in Tivoli."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"This team has problems of self-confidence. About the quality of the players, there's no need to waste words. This has happened to us for the third straight time, and things like this can't happen to a great team. We have to work on this problem."

Players

JURAK, GORAN
Union Olimpija
"This has been my ideal first game in the Euroleague. We have beated the best scoring team of the Euroleague thanks to a tactic that is not the usual one for our coach. Before the game, Gasper Okorn told us the key points to follow and we listened to him and obeyed on the floor. This fantastic crowd deserved this kind of goodbye."
JURKOVIC, IVICA
Union Olimpija
"We wanted the victory more than Maccabi did and we put more enthusiasm into getting it. We all fought and this is a team victory. The fans have been phenomenal during the whole season and this victory is for them."
HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"It's always nice to return to a city where you have had good times. This time, Union Olimpija has shown that it has heart and the victory is deserved."
VUJCIC, NIKOLA
Maccabi Elite
"I can't believe that the same thing has happened to us again. In the locker room we said that we can't lose our heads when we have a 10-point lead, but we lost it. This should not happen to Maccabi."
