THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket targets a share of first place in Group A when it hosts undefeated group leader Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday in France. Le Mans (2-1) is coming off of an impressive defensive effort in a 53-64 win at Efes Pilsen, in which forward Kenny Gregory had 21 points and 10 rebounds and center Sandro Nicevic had 14 points and 8 boards off the bench. Olympiacos (3-0) dominated Prokom 97-74 last week as Andrija Zizic scored 22 and Alex Acker posted 14 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. The rookie Acker's versatile game has impressed so far as he has averaged 16.7 points, 3.7 assists and 2 steals alongside his 9.3 rebounds, which are third best in the league. Zizic and Henry Domercant lead the league's No.1 offense with 17 points per game each. Olympiacos averages 95.7 points per game and also leads the league with 16 offensive rebounds and 45.3 rebounds per game. Le Mans has averaged just 71 points, but amazingly leads the league in assists with 18.7. On paper, Gregory, who is fourth in the league in scoring at 18.3 points per game, would seem to be the team's top player, but on an offense that shares the ball so freely, any player can stand out on any night. The real question heading into this game is which style will prevail: Olympiacos's run-n-gun attack or Le Mans lock-down defense. Though the French champion certainly has players in point guard Tyson Wheeler and forward Eric Campbell that can shine in the open court, it's hard to match the transition play of the Reds, who have the fast break down to a science. On the other hand, Olympiacos has the tools to produce in the half-court, but hasn't had to do so yet in a close game. The keys could lie with Le Mans's guards, Wheeler, Yannick Bokolo and Pape Phillipe Amagou, who'll need to to get into Scoonie Penn's to have an effect on the Reds' attack. Worth noting is that Olympiacos arrives well-rested after an easy domestic game that saw the second string do most of the work. The team also would like to win as a birthday present for coach Pini Gershon, who celebrated 55 this week.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We are glad to host Olympiacos, which is currently the Group A leader after three big victories in a row. We are aware of the great quality of this team, which has almost unlimited offensive weapons. We will aim and strive to restrict their efficiency as much as possible. That means we will have to control the offensive boards as well as to restrict their drives to the hoop."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"The fact that Le Mans beat Efes Pilsen in Istanbul means two things, that there are no easy games in the Euroleague and that we cannot underestimate a good team like the French champs. They definitely want to beat us and climb to the top of our group, but we want to win too, and we know the way to accomplish our goal. Le Mans likes a slow-tempo game and emphasizes defense, but we have to play our game and not follow theirs. They are smart enough to name Olympiacos as the favorite team, since they want to take the stress off themselves. But their recent win in Turkey made us prepare this game very carefully."

"All Euroleague games are dangerous and we have to give our 100 percent to win this one. Le Mans has the perfect psychology after beating Efes Pilsen on the road, and that makes our mission even more difficult. But if we beat them, we will stay at the top of our group, without any losses, and that is great motivation. Be sure that we will fight hard to win and this is the reason why we went to France two days before the game, so we can get the best preparation. My experience says that the French teams are very athletic and they have seven, eight players with great potential. We need to play hard defense and be smart in execution. If we combine these two things, we will have the opportunity to accomplish one more road win."
Alex Acker - Olympiacos Olympiacos stormed back from a 14-point, third-quarter deficit to remain undefeated in Group A after an 81-88 win over Le Mans Sarthe Basket on Thursday night in France. Scoonie Penn led Olympiacos with 26 points and Alex Acker aded 21 points and 4 steals. The visitors improved to 4-0, one game ahead of Tau Ceramica for the group lead. Olympiacos visits Efes Pilsen next week. Le Mans dropped to 2-2 and fell into a four-way tie for third place. It next faces Dynamo Moscow. Acker helped Olympiacos climb back from an early deficit to get within 45-44 at halftime. Le Mans prodigy Nicolas Batum sparked an 11-0 run to start the second half, but Penn and Acker brought the Reds back and Andrija Zizic took over down the stretch to earn the key road win. Zizic finished with 13 and Manolis Papamakarios added 10. The teenage Batum, who had 2 points in his Euroleague career coming into the game, scored 15 for Le Mans, as did Eric Campbell, Kenny Gregory and Sandro Nicevic.

Defensive-minded Le Mans stepped on the gas early in the game, with Tyson Wheeler pushing the ball and Gregory finishing as the hosts rushed ahead to a 9-5 lead. However Olympiacos bounced back quickly when Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Papamakarios entered the game and changed the game through defense, while Acker came up big on the offensive end. The versatile swingman scored 4 points and then fed Panagiotis Vasilopoulos for an easy layup to take a 12-15 lead. Frederic Adjiwamou knocked down a triple to tie the game, yet Papamakarios answered back from beyond the arc and Vasilopoulos scored from an assist by Acker. Le Mans pulled within 19-20 behind back-to-back baskets by Nicevic, but on the other end it was Papamakarios who was left open and punished the hosts with his second triple of the night to boost the margin to 19-25, after 10 minutes of play..

The second quarter got underway with the tandem of Nicevic and Campbell dominating inside. The latter scored on an offensive rebound and moments later converted a three-point play to pull Le Mans within 26-29. Schortsianitis drilled a pair of free throws, but on the other end he could not stop Campbell from hitting a baseline jumper. Yannick Bokolo fired one in from downtown and Batum followed with another triple. The Le Mans rookie was looking nearly unstoppable, picking up the scoring slack and pouring in 10 consecutive points to extend the lead to 45-38. Acker didn't give in and with a pair of free throws and an energetic drive helped Olympiacos claw its way back to 45-44 at halftime.

Eric Campbell - Le MansLe Mans opened the second half with an emphatic dunk by Batum that triggered an impressive 11-0 run and a 56-44 advantage after two minutes of play. Pini Gershon was forced to call a timeout, which seemingly awakened his players and allowed Olympiacos to close the gap behind baskets by Ryan Stack and Penn. On the other end, Nicevic and Campbell created havoc with slams that brought the crowd to their feet and restored a double-digit lead. Stack scored and hit a free-throw and then rejected Nicevic and suddenly the momentum began to shift. Acker caught fire once again and with a three-point play got the guests within 62-58. Bokolo stepped up with a triple to race Le Mans to a 67-60 lead, but a 7-point outburst by Penn turned it into a thriller at 70-69.

Stack was called for a flagrant foul on Campbell, but it translated to only one point for Le Mans. Olympiacos reclaimed the lead when Penn connected from downtown. Pape Philippe Amagou missed a jumper and Penn, who was looking like a man on a mission, popped in 2 more. Batum tied the game with a triple, but what followed was a one-man show from Zizic who scored 6 points to give Olympiacos a 76-80 lead. Nicevic answered to keep Le Mans within 78-80 with three minutes left, but the hosts could not get closer than that. Penn and Zizic sparked another 0-6 spurt that made it 78-86 with 1:12 to go, essentially wrapping up the game. Even though Gregory scored a late triple by Gregory, Olympiacos escaped victorious.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We are disappointed because we played a great game with the lead 62-48 in minute 25. But Olympiacos didn't panic and came back step by step into the game with a very hot Scoonie Penn. And finally they succeeded to beat us in the last minutes with their experience and talent. Despite of the loss I am very proud of my players."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"I'm not satisfied with the way we played but I'm satisfied with the win. I saw Le Mans against Efes and I know that it was going to be a difficult game. Vincent Collet prepared 200 percent this game. They have a very good team. We were more close to losing the game than winning it. Basketball is like this. It is not always the best team who wins the game."

Players

WHEELER, TYSON
Le Mans
"It was a good match. We played very hard. We must be ready to play the next match just as strong."
ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Olympiacos
"We didn't start very well. We gave Le Mans the right to take control of this game. It was a big win for us. We have to continue like this."
