THE TAKE

Artland Dragons would be well served to hand Eurocup Group G leader Pamesa Valencia its first loss of the campaign to improve its chances of reaching the Last 16. Head coach Thorsten Leibenath's Artland dropped to 1-2 after losing 84-67 at Pamesa last week. The German club shot 53% for the game, but did not defend very well. Artland held Valencia to 48% shooting from the field, but Pamesa hit 10 of 23 (43%) from long range. Dragons also lost the battle of the boards 29-24, including 12 offensive rebounds for Valencia. And Leibenath's men turned the ball over 18 times to just 12 for Pamesa. Forward Adam Hess led Artland with 19 points, center Darren Fenn added 15 points and 7 rebounds and guard Drew Neitzel chipped in 10 points. But Leibenath's starting backcourt of Will Blalock and Lamont McIntosh was overmatched and combined for just 3 points in 45 minutes of action. That kind of production will not win many games - not even at home. And Leibenath had better hope his guards can pick up their play. A loss will not eliminate Artland, but it will not give the club any kind of momentum going into the home stretch. Pamesa Valencia meanwhile is sitting pretty at 3-0 and would book a spot in the Last 16 with a victory in Germany. Head coach Neven Spahija's Spanish club was able to take Artland out of its game by neutralizing its backcourt. Guards Ruben Douglas and Shammond Williams also excelled on the offensive side with 16 points each. Douglas added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals while Williams also had 5 rebounds and 8 assists for Valencia. Recent addition Matt Nielsen showed he can be a huge help with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals and guard Rafa Martinez added 14 points. Spahija will be happy that his team worked so hard on the offensive glass while also shooting well from long range and hitting 18 of 22 (82%) foul shots. If Pamesa can repeat the same effectiveness - especially on defense - it should remain undefeated.

Ruben Douglas - Pamesa ValenciaPamesa Valencia punched its ticket to the Last 16 with a 79-89 win at Artland Dragons on Tuesday. Pamesa improved to 4-0 as all five starters scored in double figures. The visitors led from start to finish, using a 0-13 run to build an 18-point lead by the end of the first period. The Dragons narrowed the lead to 35-42 by halftime and to just 4 points in the third quarter, but Shammond Williams and Rafa Martinez pushed Pamesa's lead back up to 17. One last Artland charge made it 5 with three minutes remaining, but big men Kosta Perovic and Matt Nielsen stepped up to ice the win. Ruben Douglass finished with 27 points on 7-for-12 three-point shooting to lead the winners. Perovic added 16 points, Nielsen had 14, Williams 12 and Martinez 10. Williams also dished 6 assists. Darren Fenn paced Artland with 23 points, Adam Hess added 15, Madrich 10 and Will Blalock dished 7 assists in defeat.

Pamesa went down low to Perovic on the first possession and came away with a pair of free throws and then Douglass rifled in a three to set the stage for the visitors. Chad Prewitt and Lamont McIntosh got Artland going, but it would be short lasted. Pamesa took the game by the horns as Perovic and Douglas each scored twice more in a 0-13 charge that made it 4-18. Hess tried to spark his team with a three only to see Douglass add 2 more from downtown as the visitors built a 10-18 lead by the end of the first quarter. Triples by Drew Neitzel and McIntosh ignited the hosts’s spirit and the Fenn shined a 13-4 run to finish the half that made it 35-42 at the break. Prewitt buried a three that made it 40-44 early in the third quarter, but soon regained control thanks to Williams, who gave the visitors a double-digit lead. Martinez scored some big buckets to push the lead to 17, but the Dragons made one last charge in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 75-80 on a Madrich triple with three minutes to play. However Perovic and Nielsen stepped up down the stretch to put the game away.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Artland Dragons
"We saw a good game of both teams. We played too passively during the first quarter and waited for Valencia to hit the shot, which they did. Against this good team the gap was too big after the first quarter. Indeed we bounced back but the load was too heavy. But my team showed a courageous performance."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Pamesa Valencia
"I have to congratulate my team. I think we deserved this victory, because we were the better team from the beginning and controlled the game most of the time. But the Dragons played very good basketball. They surprise me every time and when they play like this in the German championship. They are going to win some more games for sure. With this win we qualified for the next Eurocup round, and know we have to win some games in the Spanish League to qualify for the Eurocup next season."

Players

FENN, DARREN
Artland Dragons
"Of course we had a chance to win, but Valencia is a very good team, a Last 16 Eurocup team. If it wasn’t for our bad start, we might have won the game. But when you come out 10-28 against a team like Valencia it is very hard to win the game."
DOUGLAS, RUBEN
Pamesa Valencia
"It was a very important victory for us. We are in first place and wanted to stay there. We knew that we would qualify for the next round in the Eurocup. My teammates set me up very good today and I got good shots, not like last week. But that is basketball. Sometimes you hit the shots, sometimes you don't."
