THE TAKE

A pivotal game in Group B is set to take place in Malaga, Spain, where Unicaja faces Partizan on Wednesday at 20:45 CET. Unicaja is one of the two undefeated teams in the 2009-10 regular season and has the chance to clinch a Top 16 spot if it wins and Lietuvos Rytas downs Efes Pilsen. Meanwhile, Partizan is tied for fourth place at 2-3 and needs a road win to improve its chances to make it to the next round. Unicaja faces some last-minute injury problems, as Robert Archibald and Carlos Jimenez are listed as game-time decisions due to the flu. With Archibald and Jimenez doubtful and Giorgos Printezis sidelined, center Joel Freeland and veteran power forward Larry Lewis may see most minutes around the baskets, with youngster Augusto Lima and blue-collar big man Guillem Rubio coming off the bench. Freeland has a critical matchup against Week 5 co-MVP Aleks Maric, who leads Partizan in points, rebounds and steals. Meanwhile, Lewis is set to battle against Lawrence Roberts, in what could be an interesting matchup. Jan Vesely will try to take advantage of his versatility and talent, seeing most minutes at small forward, with Slavko Vranes offering size and defense at center. Unicaja improved its offense with Shammond Williams at point guard, becoming a perfect complement to the team's starting playmaker Omar Cook. They will have a very important matchup against Bo McCalebb, since game rhythm will be critical for the outcome of this game. Petar Bozic is set to offer defense and intensity against Cook. Visiting coach Dusko Vujosevic will likely play plenty minutes with twin point guards, using McCalebb and Aleksandar Rasic, who had 25 points in Partizan's first victory last week, together on court. Partizan will be most concerned with stopping scoring machine Taquan Dean, who hopes to bounce back from an underwhelming game against L. Rytas. Berni Rodriguez and Jiri Welsch are ready to see extended playing time at both wings if Jimenez is unavailable for Unicaja, with Saul Blanco providing instant offense off the bench. Dusan Kecman seems the right man to stop Dean due to his defensive skills, while Welsch is ready for an interesting, all-Czech matchup against Vesely. Youngsters Branislav Djekic and Strahinja Milosevic offer quickness and deep range for Partizan. Unicaja must play strong defense and get Dean and Freeland involved to stay undefeated. Partizan must be patient in offense and create one-on-one opportunities for Vesely and Maric. Expect a very intense game, as even when Unicaja is the favorite, Partizan beat the Spanish powerhouse twice in the Top 16 last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"They have a big progression every year. This year they have a lot of new players. The level they are reaching compared to last season is much better. On the other hand they have the kind of team with a very big player, and when he's not on court the rest of guys make up for him shooting, passing, penetrating... They know how to do it all and that is a problem to add to the list. We have to progress everyday even if the situation gets more difficult by the minute, because when we solve a problem, a new one comes up. Carlos Jimenez and Robert Archibald have the flu now. I hope that doesn't last for long."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Of course, Unicaja is the absolute favourite because they are the hosts. Unicaja played excellent so far in Euroleague and it is sure they wish to compensate a bad start in the Spanish league with a good Euroleague record. I see our chance in unload. We are not under pressure but we shall be highly motivated and give our best. If there was some opportunity for us during the game we are ready to take advantage of it. But everyone's got to be real and be aware that the hosting team has a great advantage and our expectations must be modulated with that fact."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
"We won all the games of the first leg. but we need to keep adding wins in order to advance as soon as possible. We play at home and I hope we keep the positive vibe of the last weeks. If we win, that much better. Partizan has to win as well because they may not advance if they do not start winning fast. They defeated Olympiacos last week and I am sure they will bring a high morale with them, so it will be a complicated game. We cannot relax because in the Euroleague, all the teams have a good level. We know they need the win, no matter if you play at home or on the road, therefore we will have to be focused so that this win stays in Malaga."
VRANES, SLAVKO
Partizan
"Last season we made a real big surprise by beating Unicaja on the road and that provided us participation in teh Top 16. But this season things changed and that was clear in our first game in Belgrade when Unicaja beat us. We made a visible improvement since that game but Unicaja is the leader in our group and we are in a pretty complicated situation. The key could be rebounding and if we manage to cut the number of turnovers."
Dusan Kecman - PartizanWith a defense that did not let up the whole night, visiting Partizan Belgrade handcuffed Unicaja with its first loss of the season, 64-72, to deny the hosts an early qualification to the Top 16. Partizan boosted its record to 3-3 in the middle of the group, while Unicaja dropped to 5-1 and could not become the first team to clinch the Top 16 before its fans in Malaga, Spain. Partizan did a masterful job taking advantage of two missing Unicaja big men, Robert Archibald and Carlos Jimenez, who were out with flu. Partizan ruled in rebounds with an overall advantage of 31-47 that was even wider, 7-20, on the offensive glass. With extra possessions and great defense, the visitors seized early leads that reached double digits in the second half, when Partizan shut the door again and again on Unicaja comeback attempts. Dusan Kecman led the winners with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Aleks Maric followed with 12 and 8, respectively, while Bo McCalebb had 10 points and 5 assists for Partizan. Unicaja got 12 points from Joel Freeland, 11 from Larry Lewis and 10 from Berni Rodriguez, but did not grab a lead after 4-3 at the very start of the game.

Kecman opened the scoring with a triple from the top for the guests, which Lewis answered for Unicaja with a jumper just inside the three-point line. Lewis posted up for a turnaround, but the next three times down the floor, Partizan found layups from Kecman, McCalebb and Maric, who slammed, to bolt ahead suddenly, 4-10. Unicaja struggled against Partizan's zone until Freeland put back a miss. A timeout didn't help Unicaja as its failed fastbreak led to Strahinja Milosevic turning Partizan's into a reverse-plus-free throw for a 6-14 lead. Unicaja head coach Aito Garcia Reneses kept going to his bench now, getting a basket from Guillem Rubio, but a press didn't stop Lawrence Roberts and Milosevic from building Partizan's advantage to 10-18. Saul Blanco calmed his team and the Malaga fans with a clean triple from the wing, and soon, after Cesar Lima's free throws, Rodriguez was tying from downtown, 18-18. Partizan had the last word, however, with a layup by Branislav Djekic and a free throw from Maric for an 18-21 lead after 10 minutes.

Partizan's defense had Unicaja stymied to start the second quarter, allowing only a layup by Freeland through more than 5 minutes. Meanwhile, McCalebb hit free throws and Partizan took a lot of offensive rebounds. When the visitors found Maric again for pair of his monster slams, the guests again had a big lead, 20-27. After a timeout, it was a deep sub, 2.22-meter Nedzad Sinanovic, who unstuck the Unicaja offense with a putback. Soon, Taquan Dean was pumping in a three-pointer at 25-27. As Unicaja took a page out of Partizan's defensive book by playing zone, shots were not falling for either team. The visitors, however, were scooping up rebounds, and put-backs by Roberts and Kecman made it 25-32. Jiri Welsch cut into that with a three-pointer, but despite its own 1-for-11 accuracy from the three-point line until then, Partizan still held a 29-32 lead at the half.

Berni Rodriguez - UnicajaBoth teams kept struggling to score after the break until Jan Vesely busted out of the pack and dunked on a fastbreak. Lima got to the line and Omar Cook scored a quick layup for Unicaja, but Kecman and Milosevic had an easier time getting to the basket and Partizan's lead was back to 7 points, 31-38. Unicaja managed to get 3 points at the line before Freeland sank a turnaround jumper over 2.25-meter Slavko Vranes to make it 36-38. Partizan not only resisted, but rebuilt its lead as Aleksandar Rasic buried a three-pointer, Kecman hit a layup and Maric a free throw at 38-44. Next, it was Maric dishing to Kecman who flew untouched to the basket for a drop-in and a 39-46 advantage. Now, Unicaja needed a timeout, but out of it, Petar Bozic got free in the corner, blasted a triple, and with it gave Partizan its first double-digit lead, 39-49. Unicaja had to react, and did, with Freeland foul shots and a spectacular double-pump triple by Welsch that ended the quarter at 44-49 in Partizan's favor.

McCalebb danced through Unicaja's zone for the first basket of the fourth quarter, but Cook struck back instantly for the hosts. When McCalebb then rattled in a three-pointer from the corner, however, Partizan's lead was up to 46-54. Lima got a basket back on a turnaround jump-hook. Unicaja had an active zone, but it couldn't prevent Partizan's 14th offensive rebound so far, a flying dunk by Vesely. Next, getting loose in the corner again was Bozic, and he did not miss, giving Partizan a new high lead of 11 points, 48-59, with just under 6 minutes to play. Unicaja turned to Lewis for a big triple then, but Vranes corralled yet another offensive rebound and dunked. Then Maric took a handoff and dunked, too, before Roberts put back a miss to make it 53-65. The air was slowly going out of Unicaja's undefeated record, but Rodriguez tried to fight back with a corner triple. Freeland dropped a short jumper too, but when Kecman stepped back for another three-pointer it was 58-69 with 2:09 left and Partizan was going back to Belgrade as the first team to stop Unicaja.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
“We played a bad game.  We did not do what we needed to in almost all the aspects of the game: we shoot poorly, we didn’t block out and we made mistake after mistake in defense. We have to look forward now and recognize our errors for the next game.  We have to stay positive in any case and recover our spirit for the next game.  That is what I am going to ask of all my players.”

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We dominated the rebounds and played good defense in one-on-one situations against Unicaja's big guys. That allowed us to defend their backcourt players a bit better. We needed this win more than Unicaja, even though they did too due to their results in the Spanish League. They could not overcome that pressure."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
“We were not very sharp tonight. We were sluggish on offense, with very poor shooting percentages. It is tough to win that way. We did not score many points, there are days that that just happens. We were not shooting well and by the end of the game you feel impotent. We have to continue improving. Jimenez and Archibald are important players, but we can not look for excuses. We have to work 100%.”
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan
"We have achieved a very important victory against the leader of our group and the first favorite to reach the Top 16. We took advantage of the absence of two important players for them, Archibald and Jimenez, but we also learned something from our first game in Belgrade, when we had controlled the game for 35 minutes and lost. This time, we didn't lower our rhythm at all until the last second. I think the key has been our good response to their aggressive defense, and also our good rebounding. I congratulate my young teammates. This victory is a big stimulus for us going into the four games that are left."
