THE TAKE

ASCO Slask Wroclaw go for victory number two in Group G as they play host to Ludwigsburg. The Polish side from Wroclaw lost last week at Panionios to fall to 1-1. Head coach David Dedek's team slumped to 40% shooting from the field, 57% from the charity stripe and 18 turnovers in losing to the Greeks. Dedek made a couple changes to his starting lineup but neither point guard Kamil Chanas nor center Jared Homan could provide much offense, combining for just four points. Shooting guard Torrell Martin had another strong game and point guard Richard Atkins proved he belongs in the starting five after chipping in seven points and six assists off the bench. It remains to be seen what Dedek will do with his first five. Ludwigsburg Head coach Silvano Poropat is set in his starting lineup, but they just haven't been producing. The Germans dropped to 0-2 with a road loss to Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas. Ludwigsburg have yet to shoot better than 43% in either game and Poropat's reserves are averaging just 16 points per game, proving unable to come up with an offensive spark off the bench. Shooting guard Brandon Woudstra has been Ludwigsburg's most consistent weapon with 19 points and 2.5 assists. But Poropat cannot be pleased with his defense, which allowed both Asvel and Gran Canaria to shoot 54% from the field. If Slask hit 54% of their shots, Ludwigsburg look doomed for an 0-3 start.

Asco Slask Wroclaw moved into a four-way tie for first place in Group G on Tuesday with a 107-93 victory over ENBW Ludwigsburg. Wroclaw remained undefeated at home and improved to 2-1 together with Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas, Asvel Basket and BC Kalev/Cramo. Next up for Slask is a home game against Asvel Basket, Meanwhile Ludwigsburg dropped to 1-2 and visits Kalev/Cramo next. Dawan Robinson led six Slask scorers in double figures with 18 points and 6 assists as the team's balanced scoring attack proved to be too much for Ludwigsburg. The hosts led 54-41 at halftime, but a red-hot Frank Young carried the visitors back with 11 points during a 2-14 run to tie the game at 69-69 late in the third period. However Radoslaw Hyzy helped the home team rebuild its lead in the fourth quarter and hold on for crucial win. Oliver Stevic added 16 points for Slask, Rashid Atkins scored 13 points and dished 6 assists, Hyzy finished with 13 points and Jared Homan and Bartosz Diduszko contributed 10 each. Brandon Woudstra and Young led Ludwigsburg with 20 points. Young made 6-of-9 threes for his points. Coleman Collins added 15 and Chad Prewitt and Jason Dourisseau had 14 points apiece in defeat.

Dominik Tomczyk scored the game's first points for Wroclaw and Robinson soon had the hosts up 10-4. But Young his a triple as Ludwigsburg answered with 7 straight points to get right back in the game. It remained tight the rest of the period, with Robinson and Homan matching Woudstra as the 10-minute mark hit with the hosts up 22-20. Woudstra continued to carry the Ludwigsburg attack in the second period, but Slask had too many options and slowly increased the lead to 54-41 by halftime. Deng Gai made it a 15-point lead early in the third period, but a pair of Prewitt triples and the continuing efforts of Woudstra led Ludwigsburg back. Young then took the torch and buried three triples and 2 free throws during a 2-14 charge as the visitors tied the score at 69-69 late in the third period. However a Atkins three-point play kept Slask ahead heading into the fourth period. And the hosts were the better team as the last quarter got underway. Hyzy had a three-point play and a basket as the lead surged to 79-71. Collins came back with a basket-plus-foul of his own to get Ludwigsburg within 3, but Tomczyk's triple and another Hyzy score allowed Slask to breath deep and pull away for the win.
