THE TAKE

It's fair to say that on a rare Tuesday of Euroleague action at the beginning of December, the hopes of two ambitious clubs will be in play when Alba Berlin hosts Fenerbahce Ulker at O2 World for a Group C clash in the German capital. Every fan who makes it to the 2009 Final Four venue on Tuesday will find both teams driven as only Euroleague teams can be at this seemingly early moment in the season. Alba (2-4) is striving for its first-ever Top 16 appearance and needs this win to control its own destiny. Fenerbahce (3-3) a young team riddled by injury this season, knows that a victory in Berlin can virtually punch its ticket to the next round and give the team time to heal. One key to the game could be who is healthy now. Fenerbahce has played the entire season so far without its major signing of the summer, veteran shooter Gordan Giricek, who will fly to Berlin for the game, although his participation will be a last-minute decision. Likewise, Alba has gone the last month without its top scorer, Julius Jenkins, whose chances of playing rest upon an ankle exam on Monday. When these teams first met in Istanbul in late October, Fenerbache won 82-73 behind 25 points from Mirsad Turkcan, while Jenkins had 26 for Alba. Turkcan already has more help, as both center Semih Erden and veteran guard Omer Onan have returned from their injuries, as has veteran center Patrick Femerling for Alba. Even though Turkcan is the Euroleague's top rebounder - this season and all-time - Fenerbahce lost the battle of the boards in that first game against Alba, something that the Berliners will want to remember how to repeat. A dozen three-pointers, including 9 between Turkcan and Damir Kaan Mrsic, were more than enough to account for the difference in that first match, because Alba made only 6. Even though both teams share 33% three-point accuracy this season, Fenerbahce has tried and made almost double the shots from downtown - 57 to 32 - as Alba has so far. Conversely, Fenerbahce gets to the line a lot less but has made almost as many shot there as Alba, whose 65% free-throw rate is third-lowest in the Euroleague. Major matchups to watch are big men Adam Chubb, Femerling and Aleksander Nadjfeji of Berlin facing Turkcan, Erden and Oguz Savas of Fenerbahce. Also, point guards Steffen Hamann and Rashad Wright of Alba will need to contain, Emir Preldzic, Marques Green and Mrsic, who have taken turns hurting teams all season for Fenerbahce. In the middle of the size spectrum, presuming Jenkins does not play, Casey Jacobsen, Ansu Sesay and Immanuel McElroy will have to score points and prevent Fenerbahce's triple-shooters Mrsic and Rasim Basik from doing so. With the great, five-figure crowds that Alba is drawing so far this season to next spring's Final Four venue added to a local Turkish population getting a rare chance to see Fenerbahce, the O2 World will be jumping for sure on Tuesday night for a game that could prove fateful for either team.

GAME NOTES

Alba Berlin

  • Alba Berlin is undefeated at home this season at the O2 World, host of the 2009 Euroleague Basketball Final Four. Alba is 2-0 in the Euroleague and 5-0 in the German League.
  • Forward Ansu Sesay's double-double last week was the second of his Euroleague career and first since November 2006.
Fenerbahce Ulker

  • Shooting guard Gordan Giricek could make his Fenerbahce Ulker Euroleague debut this week. Giricek has an active streak of nine straight Euroleague games with at least 20 points scored, which started in January 2002.
  • Shooting guard Damir Kaan Mrsic has made at least 1 three-pointer in eight consecutive Euroleague games.
  • Power forward Mirsad Turkcan scored 25 points to lead Fener to victory over Berlin earlier this season, That marked the most he has scores in a Euroleague game in over five years.

Quotes Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Having lost all four road games so far, Alba now has to rely on the home court. In this league, the possibilities on the road are more difficult than at home, but nevertheless every team on this level is strong enough to win on any court. Six weeks ago in Istanbul, we failed to stop Mirsad Turkcan, but Fenerbahce has a whole group of good players to support their team. Of course, we will look to solve situations with respect to certain players, but Turkcan is not the only player we have to care about. After being on the road so often last month, it will be good to have a strong attendance and a good atmosphere in our gym for this important game."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It's another difficult game in a very difficult situation for us. Unfortunately, the injury problems we hid with the extraordinary efforts of my players since the beginning of the season are coming to light in the last few weeks. It's not easy to handle some big absences like Omer Asik and Gordan Giricek for the whole season. I'm happy to have Omer Onan and Semih Erden back on the roster, but we are suffering another problem now, the tiredeness of the players who were handling everything in the previous matches. It was a real hard game when we played Alba in Istanbul: we struggled until the last minute. And for sure, it will be at least three times harder in Berlin. It's not only because of our problems, it's also because of the position of the teams in the group. Alba Berlin will be trying to use the home advantage to win and strengthen its hopes for the next stage. It's the same situation for us; we are trying to find a safe place in the group for the next round. That will make this game definitely one of the great challenges of the week."

"We now have missed several chances for a road win, but we don't give up. If we learn from our mistakes in these losses, we still have a chance to go to the next round. Fenerbahce comes with a lot of good big guys to Berlin, but with Patrick Femerling back in our team, I think we have a good chance to do better than in Istanbul and come out with the needed win on Tuesday. It will depend a lot on the way we start the game and how we control the whole game."
ONAN, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We are having tough times both in Euroleague and the Turkish League. This Alba Berlin match can kind of refresh our mind and give us the opportunity to make a first step toward a new rise. I'm feeling fine after my long-term injury and I'm ready for a big game like this. Alba proved that they are really tougher than before in the first game at Abdi Ipekci. What we need to do is to fight for 40 minutes on defense and to be patient on offense. I believe that my teammates and myself can prove once again that we are a good team."
Ansu Sesay - Alba BerlinAlba Berlin rejoined the race to reach the Top 16 in Group C by downing Fenerbahce Ulker 72-63 in the state-of-the-art O2 Arena in the German capital on Tuesday night. Both teams now tie for critical fourth place in Group C, each with a 3-4 record, with just 3 games to go in the regular season. Alba is still undefeated at home after 3 Euroleague games at O2 Arena. Ansu Sesay led the winners with 17 points. Immanuel McElroy added 16, most of them in the fourth quarter, while Casey Jacobsen had 13 for Alba. Mirsad Turkcan had 13 points for FB Ulker but nobody else scored in double digits for the guests. Turkcan and Emir Preldzic shined early to give Fenerbahce a 9-19 lead late in the first quarter. McElroy and Jacobsen stepped up for Alba to bring the hosts within 27-30 at halftime. A three-point play by Omer Onan gave FB Ulker its last lead, 47-48. Sesay stayed on fire and got valuable help from an unstoppable McElroy to make Alba seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.

Alba went scoreless in the opening 2 minutes, in which a basket by Onan gave FB Ulker a 0-2 edge. Jacobsen finally got Alba going with a three-pointer from the left wing that Sesay followed with a jumper for a 5-2 lead. Gasper Vidmar scored down low while Marques Green added a floating layup to put Fenerbahce back ahead, 5-6. Sesay kept pacing Alba with a corner jumper but Turkcan immediately erased in the other end and struck from downtown for a 7-11 Fener lead. Adam Chubb took over with a wild reveser layup but FB Ulker kept controlling the game rhythm by dominating the boards. Onan buried a six-meter jumper, as Alba could not beat the guests' man-to-man defense now. FB Ulker did not panic and kept trying long possessions. Preldzic came off the bench and immediately struck from downtown while Oguz Savas added a second-chance layup to make it a double-digit game, 9-19. A free throw by Rashad Wright fixed the score at 10-19 after 10 minutes.

Emir Preldzic - Fenerbahce UlkerJacobsen nailed a three-pointer - from the same spot as his previous one - early in the second quarter but Devin Smith beat the hosts' zone defense with a driving layup. Preldzic fed Savas for a power layup that restored a double-digit Fener lead, 13-23. Wright tried to change things with a fast break layup but coach Bogdan Tanjevic quickly called timeout to adjust his team's defense. McElroy followed a fast break layup with free throws, as Alba had locked the defensive board and was able to run the floor. Patrick Femerling capped a 8-0 Alba run with a layup to get his team within 21-23. Preldzic silenced most of the crowd with another triple but Femerling and Aleksandar Nadjfeji kept Alba within 24-26. Preldzic scored in penetration that Turkcan followed with a put-back layup in a three-chance FB Ulker offense. McElroy naiiled a triple off an Alba timeout to get the hosts within 27-30 as both teams headed back to the locker rooms.

Both teams struggled to score after the game until Semih Erden took over with a wild turnaround jumper - and the free throw that came with it. More foul shots by Vidmar soon gave FB Ulker a 27-36 margin. Alba had been scoreless for almost 3 minutes until Jacobsen fired in a corner triple that Sesay followed with free throws for a 32-36 deficit. FB Ulker could not find the way to the basket now, while Sesay buried a bomb from downtown. Nadjfeji soon tied the game with a power layup while back-to-back jumpers by Sesay gave Alba its first lead of the game, 41-37, after a 14-1 run. Savas and Nadjfeji traded easy layups while free throws by Turkcan kept Fenerbahce within 43-41. Smith stepped up with a corner three-pointer that Wright erased with an acrobatic layup. Turkcan tied it at 45-45 with a free throw but Jacobsen scored in penetration. Onan took over with a three-point play but Sesay sank another jumper while Wright added a big basket for a 51-48 Alba edge after 30 minutes.

McElroy nailed a three-pointer right at the start of the fourth quarter, as FB Ulker kept struggling to get its main players involved. Fenerbahce went scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Erden stepped up with a layup. Sesay scored down low but Erden kept pacing Fener with a jumper. Steffen Hamann shined with a layup and fed McElroy for a fast break dunk that made the guests call timeout at 60-52. Fenerbahce could not find the way to the basket, while Chubb scored down low and soon split free throws to make it an 11-point game, 63-52. Meanwhile, Chubb sealed the outcome with more free throws, 65-52. FB Ulker needed a miracle comeback in the final 3 minutes and Green tried to ignit it with a three-pointer. Alba did not panic, however, and started to use long possessions to run down the game clock. Back-to-back fast break dunks by McElroy, however, allowed all Alba fans to celebrate a big home win in style.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"The recent road losses put a lot of pressure on us, but my team with a strong performance throughout the 40 minutes grabbed a win, that keeps us in the race for the next round. I congratulate my players for giving it all tonight and for creating again an excellent basketball show tonight in Berlin. It was visible that we were under a lot of strain. We had difficulties to score, but we persisted and and took the game under our control to win each of the last three quarters by six points. In the end we missed to win the tiebreaker, but I am by no means disappointed about that. A win against Fenerbahce Ulker with a great coach and great players is an excellent sign for us, which we will use to keep moving up in the Euroleague. If you would have offered me before the game a win against Fenerbahce by only one point, I would have taken it."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We played below our possibilities, but we did it throughout the last games. We played without physical shape and in the end simply were down. That was the principal reason for our bad performance. Already last week we were close to win the home game against Tau, but also there we missed the energy at the end of the game and I am very worried about our situation."

Players

SESAY, ANSU
Alba Berlin
"The first half was a tough ball game for us, but in the third quarter we kind of picked it up. We started running a lot and were able to get the ball to the open court better. We are a much better team, when we are able to run. From then on it was our ball game."
GREEN, MARQUES
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Berlin played a really good game tonight and took advantage of the situation. We started good into the game, but the key is to play good the whole game and we did not do that. Berlin did that a whole lot better. This is a bad loss for us."
