THE TAKE

Brose Baskets Bamberg is simply playing for pride and possibly as spoiler as it looks to exit the Eurocup with a victory against Group F co-leader Red Star. Head coach Chris Fleming's German side dropped to 0-5 - one of only two winless teams along with Le Havre - by losing 67-56 at Turow. Bamberg made 10 of 22 (45%) from long range, but hit just 42% from inside the arc while turning the ball over 18 times, compared to just 9 turnovers for Turow. Forward Demond Greene was the only Bamberg player to hit double figures with 13 points. Center Tim Ohlbrecht responded well to public criticism of his recent struggles by club management in collecting 7 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Fleming hopes his team can give its fans a fond farewell to the Eurocup. BC Red Star has already clinched a spot in the Last 16. Head coach Svetislav Pesic's Serbian club must beat Bamberg and have Charleroi lose at home against Turow to grab top honors in Group F since Spirou has a 2-point advantage in the head-to-head tie-break. Red Star improved to 4-1 by handing Spirou its first loss of the season, 93-91 at home. Forward Lawrence Roberts collected 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. But he will now miss four months after injuring his knee. Forward Marko Keselj had his second big game with 14 points thanks to 4 three-pointers. Guard Marko Marinovic tallied 13 points, guard Andre Owens had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, and center Vladimir Stimac chipped in11 points. Pesic's men made just 35% from inside the arc, but hit 12 of 28 (43%) from long range and converted 35 of 40 (88%) free throws compared to 18 of 20 (90%) free throws for Spirou. And Red Star also out-rebounded Charleroi 35-23. Even without Roberts, Red Star should have enough firepower to beat Bamberg - and then wait and see if Turow can pull off the upset.

Marko Marinovic - BC Red StarRed Star of Serbia had no chance in the end to take first place in Group F but ended the regular season with a 67-53 road victory at Brose Baskets of Germany that bodes well for its entry into the Last 16. Red Star finished 5-1 and tied for first place with Spirou Basket of Belgium, but lost their tiebreaker by having had the lower victory margin in the two head-to-head victories they split. Brose finished 0-6 as one of two teams in the competition to go winless in the regular season. Red Star used an 11-0 run to start the second half to grab control of the game while holding Bamberg to under 35% shooting from both inside and outside the three-point stripe and out-rebounding the hosts 45-29. Mirko Kovac led a fine showing from the Red Star bench with 12 points while reserves Milan Milosevic and Vladimir Stimac both added 11. Marko Marinovic was Red Star's only starter in double figures with 10 points. Andre Owens played just 4 minutes and Lawrence Roberts will miss about two more weeks with injury. Bamberg led by 14 points in the first quarter but scored just 5 in the last one. Demond Greene led Bamberg with 15 points and Filiberto Rivera added 11 points.

Bamberg had a promising start with Greene knocking down a three-ball to start the game. Jared Newson got out in transition and hit a lay-up to push the lead to 8-0. Red Star missed their first seven shots – including six from long range – and finally got on the scoreboard on a Marinovic layup with 4:36 left in the first quarter. Rivera scored the next six points as the lead grew to 14-2 and Greene’s jumper made it 18-4. But Red Star slowly fought its way back into the game. Elmedin Kikanovic finally hit a jumper and then Nemanja Bjelica knocked down a triple to cut the lead to 19-9. And it was Bamberg leading 21-10 after one period. Kovac started the second period with a triple and Milosevic cut the deficit to 21-15 as Red Star began getting better into the game. Predrag Suput hit Bamberg’s first basket of the quarter and Tim Ohlbrecht made it 25-17. Marinovic and Stimac brought Red Star to within 25-24 before Suput and Rivera knocked down three-pointers to re-estab lish a 31-24 advantage. Bjelica hit a jumper and then back-to-back baskets after a turnover had the lead down to 31-30. But Eric Taylor answered with a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to make it 34-30. And Red Star pulled to within 34-33 at the break. Marko Keselj hit two foul shots to start the second half and give Red Star its first lead of the game at 34-35. Keselj hit an inside lay-up and then Marinovic banked in a long three-pointer as the gap increased to 34-40. And a Milosevic lay-in made it 34-44 – to complete a 0-11 run. Greene stopped the run with a jumper and Michael Jordan’s three-ball trimmed the deficit to 39-44. Milosevic and Kikanovic both hit two foul shots to re-establish a 39-48 advantage. Greene would answer with two long balls and Robert Garrett's triple left Bamberg trailing just 48-50 after three periods. But Bamberg could not build on its late third quarter push and Stevic opened the fourth with a back-door cut layup and Marinovic hit a desperation three. The lead was back to 48-57 after Kovac’s lay-up in the lane to finish the 0-7 start to the fourth. Greene grabbed a steal and hit a break-away layup but the German club could not convert offensively and Marinovic and Kovac both knocked down two free throws as the lead grew to 50-63 and the game was out of reach.
