The Take

Two former Euroleague champions meet again, in what has become a classic showdown in the competition. Barcelona ranks second in performance index ranking (102.3) and has committed the fewest turnovers in the competition (10.3 per game). Coach Xavi Pascual’s men are also among the leaders in three-pointers made (second, 9.7 per game), two-point shooting (fourth, 54.6%) and fouls committed (16.1). Panathinaikos ranks third in assists (20 apg.), mainly because of its two elite pass-first playmakers, Dimitris Diamantidis and Nick Calathes, who will run to control the game tempo at all times. Tomas Satoransky and Carlos Arroyo must step up against them to allow Barcelona to play at the right rhythm. Powering the offensive glass will be a big key for Panathinaikos, as despite having good rebounders like Miroslav Raduljica, Ognjen Kuzmic and James Gist, the Greens rank last in offensive boards (8.3 orpg.). Raduljica and Kuzmic must go against star center Ante Tomic in a key matchup. If Shane Lawal remains sidelined, Samardo Samuels and Justin Doellman will see extended playing time around the baskets for the visitors. Nikos Pappas may be back in action to help Vladimir Jankovic, Sasha Pavlovic and James Feldeine at the wings. Barcelona has a battery of tough defenders - Pau Ribas, Stratos Perperoglou, Brad Oleson - and sharp shooters - Alex Abrines, Juan Carlos Navarro - ready to play a big role in this exciting game.

Head Coaches

Panathinaikos Athens
"It was about time that we break it (Panathinaikos's winning streak against Barcelona). We played to win the game from the first second until the last moment. That was the key - we played to win. We played seriously and this is the right path to reach success. I told my players that the only option to win this game was to prove that we would wanted to. It has been a great team effort and I like that very much. We scored 93 points against a solid defense and our defensive intensity was at a very good level, with the exception of the last minutes when Barcelona played small ball with Perperoglou at power forard. We reacted very well in general, thanks to our good playmaking and the ability to read situations. Diamantidis made some big shots, while Raduljica had an amazing performance and I am happy because he is working hard and progressing. Nothing is over yet. The most important game is waiting for us next week and we have to keep our focus, concentration and desire. I always believe that for a good and ambitious team, the sky is the limit and this is what I want to teach my players."
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Congratulations to Panathinaikos for its win. Stats sometimes don't reflect the reality of the game, but they do this time. We are able to win three quarters here in Athens but a very bad second quarter was definitive for us. We lost control of everything in the second quarter on defense and offense. We had 5 turnovers - 9 in the entire game, but 5 of them in this second quarter. We had our options and managed to get within one point but Panathinaikos had gained a lot of confidence throughout the game and it was impossible to complete our comeback. We had a moment in which we didn't play well but the team was able to react. We bounced back with our offense, not with out defense. If you are not solid on defense in a Euroleague road game, it is very difficult to win and this is what happened today."

Panathinaikos Athens
"Passion, toughnes, determination and the big desire to win them have been the main factors of our victory. The orders given by the coach were simple: be tough for the entire game. We were all ready to play and give the best we could. The whole team played simple basketball, got the right decisions and didn't have second thoughts,. Barcelona is a great team, but we had more will and needed to win it. Regarding myself, it is always nice to hear your name from the fans and I appreciate it very much"
Panathinaikos Athens
"We took this game as an opportunity to make a statement and prove that we can play and beat every opponent. Barcelona is a great team and they have beaten us in nine consecutive games, but tonight it was our turn. I think that the key point for us to win was the toughness and concentration we showed for 40 minutes."
Panathinaikos Athens
"The most important thing is that we won the game. I feel glad about personal records, but even happier because my team won. We played with energy since the start of the game and you saw the result."
FC Barcelona Lassa
"If you don't play good defense, you have no chance to survive and win, that's simple. We allowed Panathinaikos to score 93 points, including a career-high performance by Raduljica and some big shots made by Diamantidis. We lost our concentration and had a lot of bad reactions on defense, which caused us to lose this game. Regarding the defense on Raduljica, our plan was to trap him, but it didn't work out. We came back from a 16-point deficit, but once again made some mistakes. At the end of the day, I don't think that we have something to keep from this game."
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Unfortunately, we didn't play good defense and allowed Panathinaikos to score easy points. Since they outscored us in the third quarter and led by 16, it was almost impossible to catch them. We managed to recover, however, and cut the margin to one point, but then we made some big mistakes. Now it is over, so we have to focus on the next game and try to keep first place in this group"
