THE TAKE

Two Italian league giants will meet on the Euroleague stage when Climamio hosts Benetton Treviso in a Group A clash on Wednesday. Co-group leader Benetton (6-3) has a better record than Climamio (5-4) in both domestic and Euroleague action. However, Climamio has the edge in their three previous meetings this season, winning twice at home in October, the first for the Italian Supercup trophy to start the season. In their only Euroleague game, Drew Nicholas torched Climamio for 26 points when Benetton recorded a 94-84 home win in Treviso in November. Climamio is undefeated at home this season and hasn't lost a Euroleague game at home since February 2004 - a span of 18 games. Benetton is only 2-2 on the road this season. Benetton (82.4 ppg.) and Climamio (81 ppg.) are third and fourth in the league, respectively, in scoring, but Climamio has been the better defensive side, limiting opponents to 73.8 points per game, as opposed to Benetton's 78.3. Benetton leads the league in three-point shooting with a 43.1 percent success rate, and league-leading scorer Nicholas (18.8 ppg.) is a big part of that. He has made 30 of 61 three-pointers (49.1%) so far this season, tying for the most triples made in the entire Euroleague. With starting point guard Nikos Zisis yet to return from a broken hand, Nicholas teams with Ramunas Siskauskas (10.2 ppg.) and Marco Mordente (8 ppg.) in the backcourt. Climamio has a talented foursome manning its guard spots, with Marco Belinelli (14.8 ppg.), Sani Becirovic (11.7 ppg.), Kiwane Garris (9.4 ppg.) and Green (7.7 ppg., 2.7 spg.). Climamio's interior trio of center Dalibor Bagaric (8.8 ppg.), Erazem Lorbek (8.1 ppg.) and Travis Watson (8 ppg.) will have a rough time against Benetton's Petar Popovic (12.6 ppg., 58.4% 2FG), Marcus Goree (11.6 ppg., 7 rpg., 1.5 bpg.) and Andrea Bargnani (8.7 ppg.). A big game from Climamio's big men on defense will have a two-fold effect. Not only could they stop Popovic and Goree from scoring, but it would effect the amount of open shots from the perimeter that the Benetton guards can enjoy, which could be key to stopping the visitors. Benetton will need Siskauskas, Mordente and Goree to help develop its passing game without Zisis, another key if it wants to return to Treviso with the victory.

Climamio climbed closer to the Group A leaders when it blasted Benetton Treviso 84-65 in an all-Italian clash in Bologna on Wednesday. A 34-point first quarter by Climamio set the stage for big leads that the hosts protected with ease the rest of the way to raise their record to 6-4. That is the same mark now as Benetton has and it remains to be seen if it's good enough for share of first or second place after Zalgiris and Tau Ceramica, both 6-3, play home games on Thursday. Stefano Mancinelli was the catalyst for Climamio early and finished with a team-high 19 points in 21 minutes. Sani Becirovic scored 15 off the bench for the winners, while Dalibor Bagaric added 14 points, Kiwane Garris 12 and Erazem Lorbek 11. Euroleague scoring leader Drew Nicholas did most of the damage for Benetton, with 26 points, while Marcus Goree added 11.

Climamio's offense took the game over immediately as Mancinelli got started with 7 points of his own in a 9-2 edge after 2 minutes. Marco Belinelli and Garris barged in with back-to-back triples to push the lead to double-digit already, 15-4. Nicholas found his first three-pointer, but Belinelli replied with a long jumper and Climamio was still way ahead, 19-9, after Lorbek made foul shots. Nicholas was the only Benetton player to reply while Climamio found points close to the basket, thus pushing the lead to 15 points, 25-10, on a Mancinelli put-back and a Lorbek layup. With Benetton coach David Blatt calling a zone to stop Climamio, Sani Becirovic buried a triple and fed Travis Watson for an easy layup and a 31-13 lead. Benetton couldn't find its way inside, so Luca Sottana nailed a three-pointer to revive the guests. But when Becirovic copied him, Climamio had an amazing 34-16 lead at the end of a quarter.

The Bologna crowd got worried when forward Tomas Ress left following a collision with Marcus Goree of Benetton. It was then that the guests made their first run as Nicholas and Rimunas Siskauskas closed fastbreaks to make it 34-20. Climamio exploited a flagrant foul with another triple by Sani Becirovic, who later added a drive-plus-free throw to double Benetton's score, 40-20. Nicholas played the point now and fed Goree for a baseline dunk but Becirovic wasn't done and broke the double-team to make it 44-24. He had 13 points already. Climamio kept defending with intensity as Mancinelli stole and scored in the open court and added a triple that made it 49-28. Nicholas continued as Benetton's go-to-guy, creating for himself and his teammate, but when Garris fed Lorbek for an open three-pointer, it was 56-34 at halftime and Benetton was looking at trouble on the road.

Siskauskas scored on a floater to open the third quarter while Mancinelli shocked everyone again with a no-look pass and a dunk to make it 61-36. Kiwane Garris got red-hot with back-to-back triples and Climamio ballooned its lead to 27 points, 67-40, midway through the quarter. A standing ovation followed Mancinelli when he went to the bench, while Nicholas kept fighting by going over 20 points on an amazing jumper for 67-45. Climamio loosened its grip on the game with no field goals in 4 minutes, although Benetton didn’t get closer than a 20-point deficit, which came with Goree's put-back for a 69-49 scoreboard after 30 minutes.

A turnaround jumper by Andrea Bargnani brought Benetton under the 20-point wall, 71-53, but he soon fouled out early. By this time, Climamio was on automatic pilot and didn’t let Benetton coming closer. Bagaric stopped any Benetton rally attempt, scoring against Petar Popovic and dunking for a 75-55 score with 5 minutes left. Belinelli fed his big man again and Fortitudo hit another 21-point lead on 77-56, before Nicholas drove the lane. Goree and Popovic rounded their stats down the stretch but it’s been a one-way night as Climamio had already run away with a 84-65 blowout win.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Climamio Bologna
"We started with great concentration and reactiveness, succeeding in building a great advantage after 20 minutes. At halftime, the game seemed over and for that we could play better in the second half. Of course, we are satisfied especially because have had five players in double digits. We improved our shooting compared to last game. As in the previous games against Benetton, the team which won the rebound battle, then won the game – and we did it. I'm happy because we took only a few days to recover mentally after the last loss. Treviso has problems, it's not easy to play without two starters. When Belinelli and Becirovic got their third fouls, I was worried by Benetton's skill in rallying. They have players like Siskauskas and Nicholas who can score a lot in transition."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"Congratulations to Climamio. They played much better than us and deserved the win. I don't have excuses. We didn't play well, I didn't coach well. It's been a very bad game but it happens at the third game in a week. We probably went down physically and psychologically. Moroever, we suffered injuries. Anyway, we don't have an excuse because we didn't do our job. They did it great and took a deserved win. Why did I say I coached bad? The first quarter score was 34-16 and probably I didn't prepare my team well, technically and mentally. That's my responsibility."

Players

MANCINELLI, STEFANO
Climamio Bologna
"Our goal has to be playing this way every night. We reacted to the loss in Siena and we did it in the best way. The team played a great game against the team which is leading the Italian championship, forcing it to play under expectactions. I'm happy for my outcome tonight and happy to have done it here. I'm recovering from a bad period and a troublesome ankle injury. I played good on offense but could do better on guarding Nicholas. I'm in a better shape now but I have nothing to prove."
MORDENTE, MARCO
Benetton Basket
"Everything went wrong from the beginning. We can't allow 34 points in 10 minutes if we want to win here. Our defense was bad not only in the first 18, 20 seconds of every play but we lost balls too – offensive rebounds especially. The result was such a big gap after one quarter. We haven't been smart tonight. At our third game in Bologna, we wanted to play a balanced game – and we expected it. But we didn't. Playing without our point guard Zisis and a key player like Soragna is more difficult game after game. We played with 7 men for the third game in a row. But that's not an excuse, just reality."
