THE TAKE

Benetton Tamoil needs to return to its winning ways in the ULEB Cup Last 32 return leg if it hopes to reverse a 10-point deficit as it hosts first leg winner Red Star. Head coach Oktay Mahmudi's Benetton suffered an 81-71 defeat at Red Star - the Italian club's first ULEB Cup loss since Week 4. Treviso came into the Last 32 as one of the hottest teams in the competition. But Mahmudi's men shot just 41% for the game, committed 15 turnovers and made just 13-of-19 (68%) free throws compared to 18-of-18 for Red Star. But things could have been worse as Mahmudi's defense held Red Star to just 7-of-31 (22%) from long range - though Red Star shot 72% from inside the arc. Center Mario Austin paced Mahmudi's team with 24 points and 8 rebounds while guard Reece Gaines had 14 points and power forward Nana Mensah-Bonsu 11 points and 12 rebounds. But small forward Matteo Soragna was held scoreless (after averaging 11 ppg in the regular season) and playmaker Lionel Chalmers never found his rhythm, scoring just 6 points (11 under his average), handing out just 1 assists and committing 6 turnovers. For Treviso to have any chances of advancing to a Last 16 showdown with either Besiktas or Hapoel Jerusalem, Chalmers and Soragna will have to regain their form. Red Star, for its part, knows it is much better off traveling to Italy after using a late 9-0 run to open a cushion for the return leg. And head coach Stevan Karadzic has to be pleased that his Serbian club could win by 10 points despite such struggles from outside. As usual, power forward Tadija Dragicevic and playmaker Omar Cook carried Red Star, combining for 38 points with 6 three-pointers, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 steals. Small forward Mladjen Sljivancanin had a solid all-around game with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals even though he missed all seven of his three-point attempts. If Red Star can shoot a bit better from outside; not turn the ball over too many times; and keep Treviso from shooting lights-out from long range, Karadzic has a good chance of getting to the Last 16.

Mensah-Bonsu capped a 13-0 run with a layup early in the fourth quarter. Bakic and Markovic tried to change things for Red Star but Lucas scored again and Soragna added a triple for a 15-point Benetton lead, 72-57. Bakic and Cook made free throws while Markovic buried a three-pointer to tie the series, 74-64, with 3 minutes remaining. Cook buried a critical three-pointer and even when Lucas scored, Cook stroke again from downtown to seal the outcome of the series, 77-73, with a minute to go. An unsportsmanlike foul on Chalmers and a double technical foul on the Benetton bench allowed Cook and Red Star to get a road win and sweep the series.
