THE TAKE

Elan Bearnais Pau-Orthez hosts Benetton Treviso in a crucial Group C battle on Thursday night at the Pau Sports Palace in France. Both teams enter the game tied with 3-2 records and knowing that a win will either give them sole possession of third place, just one victory out of first, or perhaps even a share of second place, depending upon the result of Wednesday's game between Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow and Group C leader Winterthur Barcelona. Pau has won twice on the road this season and at home against CSKA. It coming off an 84-96 overtime win at Eldo Napoli in which Clint Harrison led the way with a season-best 22 points while Ricardo Greer posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards. Meanwhile, Benetton put on one of the best defensive displays in the history of the Euroleague on the way to a 64-42 win over Aris Thessaloniki. Benetton held Aris to the third-fewest points ever in a Euroleague game, and just 4 points in the fourth quarter. Matteo Soragna led Benetton with 19 points. Benetton holds a 4-2 advantage in all-time meeting between these clubs, though few players from the current squads played when they last faced one another two years ago. Rebounding could be a major factor in this game, as Pau (36.8 rpg.) is worth several more possessions that Benetton (31 rpg.), however the Italian champs make up for that with 15.4 steals per game – second-most in the league. A key to the game will be whether Benetton start Marcus Goree (14.6 ppg., 8.2 rpg.) is healthy enough to perform after undergoing an MRI on Monday for knee and ankle pain after a weekend injury in the Italian League. Goree will travel with the team but is unsure to play. Forwards Michael Wright (15.4 ppg., 5 rpg.) and Britton Johnson (12 ppg., 4.2 rpg.) will have their work cut out for them anyway against Spencer Nelson (12.4 ppg., 7.4 rpg.) and whatever Benetton big men can help him. However, it's the rebounding help that Pau gets from swingman Ricardo Greer (9.6 ppg., 6.8 rpg.) and playmaker Aaron Miles (5 rpg., 4 apg.) that often makes the difference. Miles and Harrison (10.4 ppg.) will have more than just rebounds on their minds trying to stop Benetton's guard trio of Nikos Zisis (12.4 ppg.), who leads the league with 5.2 assists per game, Terrell Lyday (8.4 ppg., 2.6 spg.) and Marco Mordente (9.2 ppg.). If Benetton can duplicate last week's defensive effort, this will be a vary difficult game for the home team. In that case, Miles will use the bullish Wright in the paint as a backup plan, hoping that Goree either won't be there or won't be at his best. Either way, expect this key result to be fought over strenuously by both teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"This game is very important for us in this group as we look ahead. It is an oportunity to confirm the victory in Naples and to keep our positive dynamism. Benetton is a good team that uses many combinations of defenses. They are very difficult to move against and they have decisive players inside and outside. Terrell Liday proved recently in France what he is able to do on the court. We will need to produce our best basketball to get what interests us from this game - a victory."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"We expect an exciting game. Pau-Orthez has had great results in the Euroleague so far and they have a good position in the standings, like we have. They have talent and athleticism, and they try to exploit these features to play a fast style and to be competitive for the whole game. Pau-Orthez always plays as a team and this is the reason why they are having a good season in the Euroleague. On the other hand, we are doing a good job, too, considering that our group is the toughest one. It's going to be a challenging game, and we want to face it with the right spirit after the Italian League win in Rome, even if we are suffering for some injuries."

Players

GREER, RICARDO
Pau-Orthez
"We have just won two games consecutively, against Naples in the Euroleague and Le Mans in the French League. It is the first time in the season that we have maintained the same rhythm. The team is improving, but now our challenge is to get a third victory. Our situation is positive in the Euroleague, but it could be better on Friday. We know that each opportunity is important because in the second part, it will more and more difficult. Benetton has a great tradition in the Euroleague, so no doubt they will come to Pau with ambition and determination. I love this kind of tough game."
GIGLI, ANGELO
Benetton Basket
"It's an important chance for us to try to get our first win on the road in the Euroleague. We will go to Pau to play at our best and win over our opponents. I think that we need to be aggressive, since we know that they will play physically. We need to begin with intensity and keep on playing our kind of basketball: these will be the most important features while playing against Pau, which is one of the up-and-coming teams in our group."
Terrell Lyday - Benetton Treviso Benetton took an important step towards claiming a spot in the Top 16 from Group C by downing Pau-Orthez 73-86 on the road in France on Thursday night. Benetton improved to 4-2 and is now third in the Group C standings, while Pau dropped to 3-3 and shares the fourth spot with Aris TT Bank. Marco Mordente led the winners with 21 points on 5-of-6 three-pointers. Terrell Lyday added 16, Spencer Nelson posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, Marcus Goree had 12 points and Matteo Soragna 10 for Benetton. Michael Wright had 18 points for Pau, Britton Johnsen added 12 and Ricardo Greer 11. Pau led the game in the early going, but a 0-10 run in which Lyday scored twice from downtown allowed Benetton to get a 14-18 edge after 10 minutes. Lyday and an outstanding Mordente helped Benetton to stay ahead, 34-39, at halftime. Pau stayed in the game, as Johnsen and Wright helped the hosts to get within 59-62 early in the final period. Lyday and Goree fueled a 0-10 run which broke the game midway through the fourth quarter, allowing Benetton to add its first road win of the season.

Nikos Zisis fed Lyday for a fast break layup to open the scoring. Thierry Rupert answered with a tip-in to get Pau on the scoreboard. Goree found a layup in transition, as Pau, with C.C. Harrison at point guard, tried to play an up-tempo offensive game in the early going. He scored in the paint, while an active Rupert followed with a mid-range jumper and a dunk for an 8-4 Pau edge. Harrison capped an 8-0 run with a fast break layup, causing Benetton coach David Blatt to call timeout at 10-4. Mordente came off the bench and immediately hit a triple, as the visitors adjusted their man-to-man defense. Even with that, Ian Mahinmi scored inside and Greer added a floater to keep Pau ahead 14-8. Mordente shined with a fast break layup, and Lyday buried back-to-back threes as part of 0-10 Benetton run, which Nelson capped with a basket underneath, good for a 14-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Greer led Pau early in the second quarter, as he followed a layup with a nice dunk to tie it at 18-18. Angelo Gigli rescued Benetton with free throws and Mordente added a corner triple to keep Benetton ahead, 18-23. Greer paced Pau with free throws, which Zisis erased with a quick layup. Johnsen stepped up with a layup on a third-chance Pau offense. Lyday fired in his third triple, but Wright scored in the low post and soon added a free throw to get Pau within 25-27. Goree hit one from downtown, forcing a Pau timeout at 25-30. Mordente buried his third triple and Nelson made consecutive baskets to give Benetton its first double-digit lead, 27-37. Johnsen tried to change things with a three-pointer and a fast break dunk, but Lyday hit free throws to keep Benetton ahead, 32-39. More foul shots from Aaron Miles brought Pau within 34-39 at halftime.

Mickael Wright - EB Pau-OrthezPau returned more focused after the break and Greer got the crowd involved with a big layup-plus-foul. Soragna stepped up for Benetton with a jumper, which Harrison erased with a quick layup to get Pau within 39-41. Benetton kept attacking the basket, but Miles buried a triple to get the hosts even closer, 42-43. Soragna quickly answered with consecutive bombs from downtown, while Nelson was virtually everywhere at both ends now. Pau looked for Johnsen and Wright now, but a driving layup by Mordente and a big dunk by Gigli made the hosts call timeout at 46-53. Wright tried to get Pau going with a close basket, which Johnsen followed with free throws. Mordente fell down, got up and buried an incredible triple and then scored off a midcourt steal for a 50-58 Benetton lead. Wright found space for a layup but Mordente answered from downtown. Xane D'Almeida beat the buzzer with a triple to make it a 6-point game, 55-61, after 30 minutes.

Wright tried to ignit the Pau comeback with a layup, as the hosts tried a 2-3 zone defense. Johnsen scored in penetration to get Pau within striking distance, 59-62. Benetton was limited to just one point in almost 3 minutes, until Nelson stepped up with a put-back layup, which Zisis followed with a fast break basket, causing Pau to call timeout at 59-66. Goree shined with a layup-plus-foul, while Lyday capped a game-breaking 0-10 run which a big triple from the left wing. Mahinmi quickly answered with a power layup, but Zisis buried another one from downtown to make it a 14-point game, 61-75, with more than 4 minutes to go. Pau never gave up, but turnovers and quick shots did not help the hosts to get back in the game. Benetton started to use long possessions and kept full control of the game until the final buzzer to add a big road win to its resume.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"Benetton played very well tonight as the great that they are. I am not surprised by their level but I regret our mistakes that we paid in cash. We are disappointed because we were present in the intensity but it is hard to give 86 points at home. I am sure that this game will be useful for the future in our way to improve our basket on both sides."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"It is a great result for us tonight against a dangerous team for the Top 16. I am proud of my players, especially of Marcus Goree who played with physical problems. This kind of behaviour is basic in terms of solidarity and investment of the players. It is a great symbol of the spirit of the team."

Players

JOHNSEN, BRITTON
Pau-Orthez
"Benetton had tonight a great percentage from 3 points and as they have a good balance inside and outside, it was difficult to deny their game. Perhaps we let too many open situations. We are very disappointed tonight in front of our fans, but we know that we must keep on working hard to compete at this high level of competition."
GOREE, MARCUS
Benetton Basket
"It was a tough game against an atletic team in a difficult arena. We played as a team with big concentration and respect of our strategy. It is obvious that in basketball, when you score from outside with such success, the game appears easier."
