THE TAKE

The regular season comes to a close for two teams in Istanbul where Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Zalgiris in an important Group A showdown. Both teams are eyeing the last remaining tickets to the Top 16. And both teams can finish as high as third or miss the next stage all together in this complicated group A. FB Ulker enters the game tied with Asvel Basket for the third best record in the group at 3-6, while Zalgiris and Cibona follow at 2-7. Adding to the drama is the fact that Cibona hosts Asvel at the same time Fener and Zalgiris meet. Fenerbahce controls its own destiny and will advance if it wins. There is also a scenario where it loses and advances. Zalgiris must win to advance, but even then will be dependent on the score of the other game. Both teams will debut an important new signing for this game, but while the hosts are expected to welcome back career rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan from a lengthy injury, Zalgiris is likely without this season’s top rebounder, Travis Watson, who suffered a leg injury last week. Fenerbahce added guard Roko Ukic to spice up the backcourt alongside Lynn Greer, Omar Onan and Damir Mrsic. Veteran Aleksandar Capin returns to the Euroleague with Zalgiris, joining Mantas Kalnietis, Adas Juskevicius and career scoring champ Marcus Brown in the Zalgiris guard corps. On the wings, Tarence Kinsey teams with sniper Gordan Giricek to tangle with Dainius Salenga and Marty Pocius. In the paint, Fener boasts centers Oguz Savas and Semih Erden alongside Emir Preldzic and Turkcan. For Zalgiris, Tadas Klimavicus will likely start in place of Watson alongside center Mirza Begic, while rookie Siim-Sander Vene and Povilas Butkevicius could be called into extended action off the bench. Keeping Begic and Klimavicus out of foul trouble is of the utmost importance for head coach Ramunas Butautas, as Zalgiris has already lost Povilas Cukinas for the season. Expect the hosts to attack the basket at every opportunity, hoping to either wear down or draw fouls from Zalgiris’s only two experienced big men and get an opportunity at the less experience reserves. It will be interesting to see if Butautas tries to shake things up by using a small lineup with Salenga at power forward. The home team is always the favorite in these type of games, but despite the injuries, Zalgiris is a very experienced team and players like Brown and Salenga will surely have the youger guys giving 110% in a game that will likely go to the wire.

GAME NOTES

Fenerbahce Ulker

Lynn Greer has knocked down 16 free throws without a miss over his last three games.

Greer scored a season-high 18 points last week at Montepaschi.

Damir Mrsic had his best game of the season in Week 5 at Zalgiris, coming off the bench to make 4 of 6 three-pointer and totaling 16 points and 5 assists.

Zalgiris Kaunas

Scoring king Marcus Brown was a teammate of current FB Ulker player Omer Onan at Efes Pilsen between 2001 and 2003. Efes won the Turkish League crown in both of those seasons.

Brown scored a season-high 20 points last week in a win over Cibona.

Tadas Klimavicius replaced Mirza Begic in the starting lineup last week, marking the first time the team had varied from the starting five of Kalnietis, Brown, Salenga, Watson and Begic this season.

Mantas Kalnietis has not missed a free throw in 9 attempts from the line this season. Entering this season, he was a 68.9% free-throw shooter for his career.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Of course it’s a pity that we have to qualify for the Top 16 on the last game of the regular season. But we lost a couple of key games and that’s what it is at the moment. The good thing is that we will play the last group game of the first round in front of our own fans. Zalgiris Kaunas strengthened its confidence and remained alive in the group by beating Cibona Zagreb last week and will come to Istanbul to win, too. We will try to beat them again but it won’t be easy. We have to be tough and resistant not only for a couple of minutes, but for the whole game."
BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
Zalgiris
"It's going to be a very, very hard game for us. Only the victory with a certain point-difference will guarantee us a place in the Top 16. We have some squad difficulties as Travis Watson is out due to injury and Tadas Klimavicius didn’t practice at 100 percent the last days because of same reason. But there is good news, too – a few days ago we signed point guard Aleksandr Capin, so we have a little bit stronger first position now. We have nothing to lose so we will try to show our best and will fight only for the victory. I am sure, if we play as good as we can, the Top 16 can be ours."

Players

UKIC, ROKO
Fenerbahce Ulker
"First of all, I’m glad to be a part of Fenerbahce. I’m really very happy to be back in Europe for a great club like Fenerbahce Ulker. I’m here to help the team reach the targets both in the Turkish League and Euroleague. I will try to help the team starting with the Zalgiris Kaunas game. It will be really strange for me to start at Fenerbahce with a big game. But I will be very happy if we can win and move to the Top 16. We have the potential to do it and I believe we can get what we need."
POCIUS, MARTYNAS
Zalgiris
"This will be the main game in Europe for us this season. We started this Euroleague season well, but seven losses in a row put us in a very complicated situation. After last week’s victory against Cibona we get another chance and we will do everything as good as we can to use it. We have some problems with injuries, but we have a great atmosphere in the team and will do everything to reach our target. Fenerbahce Ulker is strong opponent, but we are prepared to face them."
Marcus Brown - ZalgirisDespite a new coach, a key injury, last-minute signings and a two-year, 13-game road losing streak, Zalgiris Kaunas roared into the Top 16 from Group A with a resounding 68-76 win over Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday. Zalgiris won its last two games to finish with a 3-7 record in a four-way tie for third place with Fenerbahce, Cibona and Asvel. All teams had gone 3-3 against the others. When the results of those games were added, only 11 points of difference separated third from sixth place. After the third tie-breaker - difference between those four tied teams - was applied, the Top 16 spots went, appropriately, to Thursday's winners. Zalgiris finished in third place in Group A and Cibona, which beat Asvel, fourth. Zalgiris needed to win by 6 points, just to make sure because the Cibona-Asvel game went longer, so a triple by Marcus Brown on the final buzzer proved enough for the visitors to celebrate on-court. Zalgiris had taken big leads early but seemingly put the game out of reach with a 14-25 third quarter after which it led by 17 points. Fenerbahce scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter, however, but couldn't get closer than 65-71 as time ran out on the hosts. Martynas Pocius led Zalgiris with 18 points, including 4 of 6 shooting from long range. Brown followed with 17 points, Tadas Klimavicius with 13 and Mantas Kalnietis with 11. Zalgiris was without its top rebounder, injured forward Travis Watson, but got 22 minutes from new point guard Aleksandar Capin, who signed the day before and met the team in Istanbul. Fenerbahce got 20 points from its own newly signed point guard, Roko-Leni Ukic. Gordan Giricek added 16 and Tarence Kinsey 11, but ultimately, poor 7-for-29 three-point shooting (24%) hurt the hosts.

Ukic made his presence felt immediately by popping a foul-line jumper to put Fenerbahce up 2-0. Mirza Begic was ready in the paint, converting a drop-step layup, after which Kalnietis scored on the break for the first Zalgiris lead. Dainius Salenga finished the visitors' next break with a triple at 2-7. Omer Onan answered with a short jumper for Fenerbahce, but Brown erased it with his own from the baseline. Kalnietis showed he was ready with a fastbreak triple to up the Zalgiris advantage to 4-12. Oguz Savas got on the board next for Fenerbahce and Ukic joined him with an inside basket that cut the difference to 8-12. Kalnietis was not concerned as he and Ukic traded another bucket each at 10-14. After a timeout, Zalgiris added scorers as Klimavicius converted in the paint, as did Siim-Sander Vene. Kinsey answered for Fenerbahce, but Pocius knocked down his first triple at 12-21. Emir Preldzic saved Fenerbahce by answering from the arc before Kinsey made an acrobatic layup and his missed free throw turned into a basket by Giriceck, suddenly narrowing the gap to 19-21. A technical foul let Brown add free throws for Zalgiris as the visitors held onto a 19-23 advantage after 10 minutes.

Fenerbahce's comeback continued into the second quarter as Giricek blasted a triple to make it 22-24 just before legend Mirsad Turkcan made his first appearance of the season for Fenerbahce. Although Zalgiris went inside twice to Begic to up the lead to 22-27, Turkcan made his presence felt with a put-back. Dueling triples by Klimavicius and Giricek got the Fenerbahce crowd excited, but they went wild when Preldzic assisted Semih Erden for a dunk and free throw, good for a 30-30 tie. Zalgiris responded with patience until finding Pocius in the corner for another three-point swish. After several misses from deep by both teams, Giricek rocked the house with his good one, but Pocius was ready with a come-back triple to keep Zalgiris ahead 33-36. Next time downcourt, Brown also struck from deep and when Pocius went to the basket for the next points, the Zalgiris lead had reached 33-41. Again, Fenerbahce got a breath of air with a three-pointer by Kinsey, but Klimavicius got a basket back at the other end as Zalgiris took a 37-43 advantage into halftime.

Roko-Leni Ukic - Fenerbahce UlkerZalgiris could have wilted when Giricek opened the second half with a three-point play to make it 40-43. Instead, the visitors played aggressive offense, with Salenga launching and hitting a triple before Kalnietis and Klimavicius went strong to the hoop for layups to suddenly put the difference into double digits, 40-50. Fenerbahce needed something and Onan gave it, a big triple. Zalgiris was undeterred, however, as Salenga and Kalnietis kept attacking and raising the lead to 43-54. Giricek answered with a layup, but Aleksandar Capin - who met his new team the night before - perfectly fed Klimavicius for a pick-and-roll dunk. Next, Pocius scored inside for a high lead so far of 45-58 for Zalgiris. When Ukic stopped Fenerbahce's bleeding, Capin started it again with a big three-pointer and Klimavicius continued it with another pick-and-roll finish for a whopping 47-63 lead. Even when Kinsey tried to spark Fenerbahce, Brown hit free throws and a step-aside triple that launched Zalgiris into the final quarter ahead by 51-68.

Fenerbahce did exactly what it had to beginning the final quarter. Kinsey sparked things with steal and a quick dunk before Ukic raised the roof with a triple. Capin made just 1 of 3 free throws, before his counterpart, Ukic, went to the basket for a layup and pulled up for a jumper. Suddenly, the 17-point Zalgiris lead was down to 9 points, 60-69, and Zalgiris needed a timeout to discuss it. Zalgiris tried a zone defense and both teams struggled for more than 2 minutes to get any points. The score was stuck on 60-69 until Erden made 2 of 2 free throws. Zalgiris had only a free throw to show for the first 5 minutes of the final quarter, but now Pocius drove hard and got to the foul line, where he made 2 of 2 for a 62-71 scoreboard with under 4 minutes left. Another lull ended with Ukic stealing and converting a scoop shot at 64-71. The Zalgiris offense was completely stuck as Erden hit 1 of 2 free throws at 65-71, but by now the clock had run down to little more than a minute left. Kinsey had an open triple in the corner but missed and Brown kept the rebound until someone fouled him. His 2 for 2 at the line made it 65-73 and then Kalnietis blocked Ukic to assure the victory - but not yet the qualification. Ukic was fouled taking a triple and hit all 3 free throws, putting Fenerbahce up in its potential head-to-head tie against Zalgiris (if Asvel were to have defeated Cibona later). After a timeout with 3 second left, Brown appeared in the corner and let go, hitting nothing but the net to start the celebration for Zalgiris, a most improbable Top 16 qualifier!

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We had much more pressure than our opponent because they had nothing to lose. They had a clear idea how to beat us. They had a trick in their mind and they penetrated all game long. They have the talent to do it. We gave them too many open three-point shots. So it was clear that we could not punish them. Mirsad Turkcan played fort he first time in many months and we had Roko Ukic for the first time after coming back from the NBA without playing enough minutes. We didn’t spend enough energy in defense. We also missed wide-open shots. Those were the keys for the loss."
BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
Zalgiris
"We were not the favorites before the game. We had some absences due to injury and we are a young team too. But we played excellent defense. We played a great game in the paint. We are shorter than them, but we were quick enough to penetrate. We played very good as a team and the key to winning the game was our defense. They also played well and I want to congratulate them. I’m happy about winning the game and reaching the Top 16."

Players

ERDEN, SEMIH
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately we lost a game which we could have won at home. We beat our opponent on the road, but we were not able to use the home advantage well. We were really very weak in defense. They penetrated inside any time they wanted to. We woke up from the sleep in the last quarter, but it was too late. There’s nothing much to say, but we played terrible and lost the chance for the Top 16 in a terrible way."
BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris

"We knew that it was going to be a very tough game. We needed to win to reach the Top 16. We had a good start and got the momentum of the game. Roko Ukic made it harder for us, but we remained focused in the game in the hard moments especially at the end of the game. Now we go to the Top 16. We will see what’s going to happen in the next stage."
