THE TAKE

Two former Euroleague champions will face each other in Group C when Winterthur FC Barcelona welcomes Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday at 20:45 CET. Barcelona, which lifted the Euroleague trophy in 2003, could punch its ticket to the Top 16 if it wins the game, depending on other results. Zalgiris, which won the competition in 1999, is on a seven-game losing streak, which started then Barcelona took an 86-92 decision in Kaunas in November. Juan Carlos Navarro (19.1 ppg., 48.9% 3FG, 93.5% FT), the Euroleague's leading scorer, paced the winners that day with 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 10-for-10 from the line. It comes as no surprise that Zalgiris's main concern will be slowing the hosts' electric backcourt duo featuring Navarro and Jaka Lakovic (11.3 ppg., 3.8 apg.). However that pair won't have its usual backup on hand, as bomber Gianluca Basile (10.6 ppg., 47.6% 3FG) is out with a strained left thigh. Up-and-coming playmaker Roko-Leni Ukic (2.2 apg.) and a recovered Roger Grimau will need to fill Basile's role. Zalgiris has been battling injury problems all season long, but its biggest loss could be Marko Popovic (15.1 ppg., 90.9% FT), who is questionable for the game in Barcelona. Complicating matters is the fact that young Mantas Kalnietis (3.4 ppg., 70.6% 2FG) and sharp-shooter Kirk Penney (7.6 ppg.) are also banged up and could miss the game. If Popovic is out, Vidas Ginevicius (4.1 ppg.) will share the point guard duties with Marcelinho Machado (6.7 ppg.), while small forward Jonas Maciulis (11.2 ppg., 5.7 rpg.) will need to step up as well. Rodrigo De La Fuente (5.3 ppg.) may see his playing time extended to stop Maciulis due to his defensive skills and aggressiveness. The battle in the paint will be one of the biggest keys to this game, as Zalgiris has its franchise player in center Tanoka Beard (15.1 ppg., 9.7 rpg.), the second top rebounder in the competition. Paulius Jankunas (10 ppg., 6.8 rpg.) and Hanno Mottola (14 ppg.) will offer their versatility, range and post moved to help Beard in the middle. Beard will have a strength test with Mario Kasun (11.4 ppg., 85.7% FT) and Denis Marconato (6.1 ppg.), Michalis Kakiouzis (5.6 ppg.) will be there to take the corner triple and come off the baseline in two-on-one situations, while Fran Vazquez (3 rpg.) may have an advantage over his defenders due to his unique combination of athleticism and speed. Even when Barcelona is the favorite in this game, expect Zalgiris to battle hard and keep its Top 16 chances alive in Group C.

It’s very important to know you’ve got that spot already, because you can play without anxiety. We expect our fans will support us in the same way they did last Saturday, in the Spanish League, so it will be easier for us. Zalgiris is a team with a lot of talent in their offense. They have some good shooters in Marcelino Machado, Marko Popovic and Kirk Penney and they normally play one-on-one situations, trying to find some mismatches when a small player is in front of a big one. Mottola likes to play open, seeking for three-pointers. Beard is a dangerous inside man, but there are many players going for the offensive rebound. We must be aware of this, because we’ve in trouble lately in this area."

"Barcelona lacks consistency this year. They play really good in Euroleague but in their local championship they do not look good. They lost a few games to average teams. When Barca runs offense well, when their players hit the shots, this team becomes unstoppable. Barca loves to run fastbreaks because even frontcourt players in this team are very quick. Itʼs very hard to stop them after a good start, but if they miss some shots in the beginning, they can get frustrated and vulnerable. What we have to do is to slow down them at the start. It will be hard to do because we already know how difficult is to defend this team. In our first game against Barca they hit some big shots and our defense was not a factor against Navarro. He is the star and his superb performance proved it."

Michalis Kakiouzis - Winterthur FCB Winterthur FC Barcelona became the second team to advance to the Top 16 from Group C by defeating its guests from Zalgiris Kaunas 84-67 in a showdown between former Euroleague champions on Wednesday. Barcelona improved to 8-2 and stays second in the Group C standings, one win away from CSKA Moscow. It has a five-victory avdantage over Eldo Napoli and Fenerbahce Ulker, who tie for the sixth place at 3-7, enough to seal its ticket to the next round. Meanwhile, Zalgiris dropped to 1-9 and is on a eight-game losing streak. Mario Kasun and Michalis Kakiouzis led the winners each with 15 points. Kakiouzis collected 6 steals while Kasun grabbed 8 rebounds. Denis Marconato added 11 points and Juan Carlos Navarro 10 for Barcelona. Jonas Maciulis had 18 points for Zalgiris, Marcelinho Marcado 13 and Paulius Jankunas 12. Kakiouzis, Marconato and Navarro fueled a 16-1 run which gave Barcelona a 28-12 after 10 minutes. Maciulis and Jankunas made Zalgiris rally and get within 57-55, but Jaka Lakovic and Kakiouzis allowed Barcelona to seal the win long before the final buzzer.

Barcelona opened the game with a tall lineup featuring Michalis Kakiouzis at small forward. Vidas Ginevicius opened the scoring with a fastbreak layup to which Jonas Maciulis added a basket in transition for a 0-4 Zalgiris lead. Navarro got Barcelona going with free throws that Marcelinho Machado matched with a five-meter jumper for the visitors. Mario Kasun stepped up with a put-back dunk for Barcelona while Kakiouzis added a third-chance layup to tie it up, 6-6. Machado scored again but Fran Vazquez answered with a power layup and Roko-Leni Ukic hit free throws to give Barcelona its first lead, 10-8. Maciulis found space for an uncontested dunk to tie again, 10-10, but soon Kakiouzis, Denis Marconato and Navarro combined for all the points in a massive 16-1 Barcelona run. Navarro's incredible driving layup finished it with the hosts on their way to a 28-12 advantage after 10 minutes. 

Paulius Jankunas - Zalgiris KaunasRodrigo De la Fuente buried a shot from downtown and Marconato dunked for Barcelona to make it a 21-point game, 33-12, early in the second quarter. Tanoka Beard finally found his first basket and soon added another layup, as Zalgiris improved its defense now. Jankunas capped a 0-6 Zalgiris run with a fastbreak dunk but De la Fuente answered with a corner three-pointer to keep Barcelona ahead, 36-18. Kasun shined with a tip-in while free throws by Maciulis and a triple by Hanno Mottola gave Zalgiris some hope at 38-23. Kasun kept pacing Barcelona with a jump-hook and the free throw that came with it, while Jordi Trias dunked twice for a 20-point Barcelona lead, 45-25. Machado hit free throws and buried a triple but an unstoppable Kasun paired a layup with a dunk to give the hosts 49-30 lead at halftime.

Jankunas tried to ignite a comeback with consecutive put-backs that Beard followed with a layup to get Zalgiris within 52-37 early in the third quarter. Zalgiris kept dominating the boards, and the ever-present Jankunas added a three-point play to 3 free throws by Maciulis, cutting the difference to 52-43. Maciulis scored again around the basket and Jankunas added a tip-in to make it a six-point game, 53-47. Beard capped a mammoth 2-17 run with a power layup at 53-49. Marconato hit a short jumper and soon added free throws to give Barcelona some air at 57-49. Zalgiris did not panic, however, as a three-pointer by Mottola sparked a 0-6 burst that Jankunas capped with a free throw to make it 57-55 barely 10 minutes after the guests had been trailing by 20. Ukic scored in penetration while Lakovic added a three-pointer, and even when Vytenis Jasikevicius shined with a driving layup, Trias beat the buzzer to let Barcelona keep a 64-57 lead after three quarters.

Lakovic buried his second triple in as many minutes to restore Barcelona's double-digit lead, 67-57, early in the fourth quarter. Maciulis responded with a huge fastbreak dunk, but Zalgiris struggled to score after that. Barcelona had started to play with long possessions, while Kakiouzis, Trias and Kasun made free throws to keep the hosts out of trouble at 73-59 midway through the final period. Machado shined with a turnaround jumper but Kakiouzis bettered it with a three-pointer. When Zalgiris went scoreless on three consecutive possessions, its options faded fast. Lakovic scored in penetration followin a Zalgiris timeout to make it 78-61, sealing the outcome with 3 minutes to go. Barcelona will keep fighting for the Euroleague title, while Zalgiris now needs a miracle to advance to the next round.

"I am angry. We had the game under control, but an awful third quarter almost spoils it for us. It always happens to us and I don't know why, that's why I can't find a solution. It's not that we do not know how to attack a zone defense, because we did that fine in the first quarter. Now we have to focus on the important Spanish League game of Sunday."

"It has been a game with many up-and-downs. No team was able to get its rhythm all the way. Zalgiris played really well in the opening five minutes of the game, but we struggled until halftime. We regained our momentum in the third quarter and got back into the game, but we wasn't able to keep our patience in the final period. Fouls were a problem, too, as some of our best players were injured. We have no options in the Euroleague, but we hope to practice hard, with Marko Popovic, Mantas Kalneitis and Kirk Penney back in the team and hopefully be able to win the Baltic League and the Lithuanian League titles."

"It has been a strange game, with many alternatives. When you play against a great team like Barcelona, we cannot have these kins of mistakes. Even when we were down by many points, we carried on fighting and managed to make it a two-point game, with chances to win the game. I really thought that we could win the game, we knew it was going to be difficult but this is what we came here for. Once we got back into the game, we didn't have enough patience. Our situation is difficult and makes us be a little frustrated. Zalgiris is a team with great tradition, we are professional players and we try to do our best. The game didn't go the way we wanted it, but we hope to get injured players back in the team and do our best."
