THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker hosts CSKA Moscow on Thursday at Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul in a truly exciting Group H encounter. The Turkish champs welcome the reigning Euroleague champs knowing how much a win to start the Top 16 would mean to both sides. Fener brings a three-game winning streak from the regular season into the contest and head coach Bogdan Tanjevic is as healthy and deep as ever, with scorer and former CSKA swingman Gordan Giricek expected to play in the Euroleague for the first time this season. CSKA on the other hand has been shorthanded in the backcourt recently with J.R. Holden missing time due to personal reasons and Zoran Planinic resting with a groin injury, but head coach Ettore Messina hopes to have a full squad ready for this clash. This game pits two well-coached and deep teams against each other. CSKA is known for its iron-clad defense, while Fener is a younger, hungrier and aggressive squad. The tone for the game will be set in the backcourt, where in addition to Holden and Planinic, CSKA will turn to Nikos Zisis to help run the show. Fener counters with Marques Green and Omer Onan, while Devin Smith and Damir Mrsic Kaan match up with CSKA shooter Trajan Langdon. The duel between Giricek and Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas at small forward will be one to watch. In the paint, both teams have an array of options. Oguz Savas is coming off a career-best performance for Fener and he will share time in the middle with Semih Erden against CSKA’s Erazem Lorbek and Terence Morris. At power forward there will be an interesting clash between Mirsad Turkcan – another former CSKA player – for the hosts and Matjaz Smodis of the visitors, while Viktor Khryapa comes off the bench for CSKA to encounter Gasper Vidmar and Emir Preldzic. The pressure will be on the home team, who will be in a hole if it starts the Top 16 with a home loss, however the Fenerbahce fans will bring tons of spirit to support their heroes against CSKA. The combined depth and talent on these teams places even more importance on the tactics that the two coaches bring to the game and the changes they make during it. And with a pair of masterminds like Messina and Tanjevic on the sidelines, this game could be 40 minutes of intense action at the highest level with the last shot determining the outcome.

GAME NOTES

Fenerbahce Ulker
  • Playmaker Marques Green has recorded a steal in every game this season. He tied for fifth in the regular season with 2.1 steals per game. Green has at least 3 steals in each of his last three games.
  • Shooting guard Gordan Giricek played for this week’s opponent, CSKA, during the 2001-02 season, during which he averaged 22.9 points per game and was among the Euroleague’s top scorers. Giricek has an active streak of nine straight Euroleague games with at least 20 points scored, which started in January 2002 when he was with CSKA.
  • Power forward Mirsad Turkcan played for CSKA during two different seasons. He was teammate of Giricek’s in the 2001-02 season, when he was named the Euroleague regular season MVP and led the Euroleague in rebounding. He rejoined the club for the 2003-04 season, when he was named to the All-Euroleague First Team, helped CSKA reach the Euroleague Final Four and win the Russian League. J.R. Holden and Viktor Khryapa are the only current CSKA players to have been teammates of Turkcan’s.
CSKA Moscow
  • Reigning Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas and center Erazem Lorbek are both just 1 steal away from reaching 100 for their respective Euroleague Basketball careers.
  • CSKA has won 10 in a row against Fenerbahce Ulker.
  • Team captain Matjaz Smodis and big man Erazem Lorbek were teammates of Fenerbahce Ulker big man Gasper Vidmar on the Slovenian national team.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This will be another great challenge for us against an extraordinary team in CSKA Moscow. They have everything you need to make up a perfect team. It’s another reason for the fans to come to Abdi Ipekci and watch the reigning Euroleague champions. But the main thing is that we need to see our supporters behind us to strengthen our chances to win. That is at least as important as our performance on the court. We have to play with the full support of our fans to hope to win the game. We are in good shape and will have Gordan Giricek back in our roster. He is not ready 100 percent, but I hope he will help us."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We start the Top 16 against a very good team coached by Bogdan Tanjevic, whom I know very well from our meetings in the Italian league. All the games on this stage will be difficult and for us the game in Istanbul will be even more difficult because we are not sure if Smodis and Vorontsevich will be able to play. The positive things are that Holden returned to practices and Planinic will play surely."

Players

PRELDZIC, EMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We will play against the strongest opponent that we can have at the moment. They are an excellent team, but at the same time, they are in good shape. The good thing is that we are in good shape, too. That’s what gives us hope for a win. We cannot guarantee that we will win the game, but I can honestly say that we will try everything we can for it. We will be as aggressive as we can and I hope we can do it for 40 minutes under discipline. This is the only way that leads to victory. I also hope to see our fans packing Abdi Ipekci."
SISKAUSKAS, RAMUNAS
CSKA Moscow
"Fenerbahce Ulker is known as a big team with a number of players 210 centimeters or bigger. And they also have Giricek, who is an experienced shooting guard. But we should not look at the names and try to defend against all the team. If we play good defense, we will have better chances to succeed."
Ramunas Siskauskas - CSKA MoscowReigning Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow got off to a strong start in Top 16 Group H by thrashing Fenerbahce Ulker 48-66 in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday night. CSKA joined Cibona in a tie for first place in the group at 1-0 and the teams will face each other in the Russian capital next week. Fenerbahce Ulker visits Montepaschi Siena, as both teams will be looking for their first win in the Top 16. Ramunas Siskauskas led the winners with 14 points. Terence Morris added 12, while Viktor Khryapa had 11 for CSKA. Gordan Giricek had 13 points for FB Ulker in his first Euroleague game since 2002. Semih Erden pulled down 11 boards for the hosts. Siskauskas buried consecutive triples in a 2-12 opening run that allowed CSKA to take a 12-20 lead after 10 minutes. Siskauskas, Trajan Langdon and an outstanding Morris fueled a game-breaking 0-11 run that made it an 18-point game midway through the second quarter. J.R. Holden helped CSKA to a 25-41 lead at halftime. FB Ulker improved its defense after the break with Gasper Vidmar and Semih Erden together on court, but CSKA kept a 38-49 margin after 30 minutes. And the hosts did not rally in the fourth quarter, as Khryapa and Morris made sure that CSKA went back to Moscow with a valuable road win.

Gordan Giricek - Fenerbahce UlkerFB Ulker tried a small starting lineup with Rasim Basak at power forward, but that didn’t phase the visitors. Siskauskas got CSKA going with a catch-and-shoot three-pointer and then Morris scored from close range before Devin Smith got Fener on the scoreboard with an uncontested layup. Siskauskas buried another triple and Khryapa also struck from downtown for a 2-11 CSKA margin. Basak joined the three-point shootout after a Fener timeout and Smith added a wild driving basket to bring the hosts within 7-12. Siskauskas sank a jumper off the dribble and Khryapa threw down an impressive two-handed slam it to restore a 9-point CSKA advantage. Oguz Savas sank free throws, but Fenerbahce continued to struggle against the guests' outstanding man-to-man defense. Khryapa fed Erazem Lorbek for a layup before as Giricek stepped onto a Euroleague court for the first time in more than six years. Emir Preldzic had a huge block on Nikos Zisis and free throws by Giricek got FB Ulker within 12-18. More foul shots by Siskauskas boosted the guests' lead to 12-20 after 10 minutes.

Damir Kaan Mrsic scored in penetration at the start of the second quarter as CSKA tried to slow down the game tempo. Morris finished a long, two-chance CSKA offense with a triple, but a jumper by Giricek kept Fener within 16-23. Siskauskas sank a five-meter shot and Morris buried a long two-pointer to make it a double-digit game. Langdon took over with a fast break layup that caused the hosts to call timeout. Zisis shined with a fallaway jumper and a corner three-pointer by Morris broke the game open, 16-34, midway through this period. Giricek tried to change things with a jumper and Semih Erden added a jump hook to get to 20-34. Giricek kept pacing FB Ulker, but didn't find much help. CSKA called timeout after which Lorbek nailed an uncontested triple to silence the crowd. J.R. followed with a driving layup, but Giricek banked in a seven-meter bomb. Holden beat the buzzer with an off-balance jumper to fix the halftime score at 25-41.

Terence Morris - CSKA MoscowHolden kept pacing CSKA with another big basket right after the break, but a free throw by Onan and a layup in transition by Erden got Fener within 28-43. CSKA followed its game plan with a very patient offense and its trademark defense. Erden, however, took over with a put-back dunk that caused the guests to call timeout at 30-43. CSKA readjusted its defense, but found problems at the other end. Meanwhile, free throws by Mrsic got Fener even closer, 32-43. Vidmar and Erden had consecutive blocks on Zoran Planinic and Lorbek, respectively, as CSKA could not find the way to the basket. A big basket by Vidmar got the crowd involved at 34-43. Planinic found space for an uncontested corner triple and soon added a free throw to keep CSKA way ahead. Vidmar was next to the foul line, but made just one attempt, which Lorbek bettered with an outstanding put-back dunk. More free throws by Savas kept Fener within 38-49 after three quarters.

FB Ulker needed a quick comeback to return to the game early in the fourth quarter and Giricek tried to ignite it with a jumper. CSKA did not panic, however, as Planinic made free throws and soon added a seven-meter bomb that sealed the outcome, 40-54, with seven minutes to go. The hosts tried to use short possessions but lacked ball circulation when it mattered most. Zisis stepped up with a backdoor layup off a FB Ulker timeout and Khryapa fired in his second three-pointer for a 40-59 advantage. Both teams fought for points differential, a critical issue for multiple-way ties at the end of the Top 16. Morris dunked it, but Savas and Erden kept the hosts within 44-61. Everything was said and done at this point, as CSKA showed its power against a quality opponent.

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"First of all, we have to remember that we played against the champions of Euroleague. They were so strong and played excellent basketball on two sides, defensively and offensively. We weren't able to find solutions to perform well against their strong defense. We were not good enough to create points the way we did before. We were thinking to use our advantage inside but we were also insufficient in the paint. And if you remain too weak on offense and concede too many three-pointers on defense, you cannot challenge an opponent like CSKA Moscow. We only did things better in the third quarter and had aggressiveness on defense. This was the only way you can match the game against CSKA Moscow, but you have to do it for 40 minutes."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"Obviously it's a very important win for us. But it's just a win and now we have to forget this win to concentrate for the next game. Because every game in the Top 16 has enormous value. I would like to say that my players played a very good game because we played excellent defense for 40 minutes. It was not easy to play this kind of defense so aggressive for 40 minutes and to have a clear mind on offense. My players had clear minds on offense also in three quarters. We played with better attitude and with excellent concentration and we were better on rebounds. And the 15 assists is the result of our good concentration. We were lucky that they were without Mirsad Turkcan. It was not easy to play in front of this kind of enthusiastic crowd. But everybody played the way they have to play under pressure and we are going back home happy."

Players

VIDMAR, GASPER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We knew that CSKA Moscow is a great team and we tried our best to win. But they were better than us. I just have to congratulate them because they deserved the win and had a great performance. I don't know what happened but we were really weak on offense. They did things better than us. We will try to win the next game against Montepaschi Siena and will hope to qualifiy to the playoffs by winning the other matches."
HOLDEN, J.R.
CSKA Moscow
"First of all, any Top 16 game is always going to be tough, especially on the road. Fenerbahce Ulker came out with a lot of intensity. They showed a lot spirit on their home court. I think we just got it started off well and had good shots and we were so tough at the beginning. They continued to fight and made the game tough for us. But we kept playing tough on defense and smart on offense. We were very solid and tried to play as solid as possible. We had a very important guy missing in Matjas Smodis, but the good thing is that we did things better to hide his absence as well as we could. We played good and well enough to win against a good team like Fenerbahce Ulker."
