THE TAKE

Olympiacos Piraeus will look to bounce back from a blowout loss to Tau Ceramica when it hosts Game 2 of their best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series on Thursday at Peace and Friendship Arena in Greece. Tau rocked the Reds 84-59 on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead in the series and will advance to the club's third straight Final Four should it also win Game 2. Olympiacos will be playing a survival card in its attempts to reach the Final Four in its own town of Athens. The Reds have reason to be optimistic, among them the fact that they recorded a 19-point win over Tau in the first game of the Euroleague regular season. However, Game 1 of the playoffs was quite one-sided, due in large part to the fantastic shooting performance of Igor Rakocevic, who made 5 of 6 three-pointers on his way to 24 points. On the other hand, Olympiacos shot a horrible 2-for-19 (10.5%) from downtown. Olympiacos also missed getting offensive help from point guard Scoonie Penn, who missed all 6 of his shots on the way to just his second scoreless game of the season. With Penn having a tough time, Olympiacos dished just 11 assists and committed 22 turnovers. The good news for Olympiacos was that guard Arvydas Macijauskas saw his first official action of the season after suffering an Achilles injury in the preseason. If Macijauskas can take the next step in his recovery against his former team on Thursday, it could help solve many of the Reds' problems. Tau can be even more optimistic, since it won easily despite the fact that all-time leading Euroleague scorer Luis Scola only had 8 points and Rakocevic only played 18 minutes. In fact, the overall ease of the game allowed Tau head coach Bozidar Maljkovic to evenly split his minutes among 10 players, leaving him with a fresh squad for Game 1. Tau has been red-hot over the last few months, winning 9 straight Euroleague games by an average of 19.9 points. Olympiacos will not only need to have its attack clicking, but also to be at its best defensively in order to force a third-and-deciding game next week in Vitoria, Spain. Olympiacos head coach Pini Gershon, who has reached the final in every full season he has coached at the Euroleague level, has made it clear that his goal with the Reds is to continue that streak, so he will surely have his squad charged up for Game 2. Expect this game to be much closer than the first one between the teams as both teams look to extend their season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"We played really bad in Vitoria and it must change. In less than 48 hours, we have Game 2 at home and we have to be ready physically and, even more, mentally. Tau has two more chances to go to the Final Four, while we have our backs to the wall. I think there is no time for further analysis and words. We have to give our best in Game 2 and execute the initial plan."
MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Tau Ceramica
"I don't want to see any kind of euphoria on my team. Any team feeling that way cannot beat any other. We saw how they hurt us in Game 1 when we relaxed our defensive effort only a bit. I know what it's like to play in Athens against Olympiacos and I know it will be quite tough, because they count on a big crowd in a big arena. We expect a different game than the previous one. We go there thinking that this should be the last game of the series, forgetting about any third game, which if it comes will be a 50-50 proposition for each team. I don't like the big difference of the first game: it was too much. Olympiacos has played and defeated big teams in the past: that means they are a quality team and that they will be a totally different team in Game 2."

Players

DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"It was a tough night for Olympiacos, but we don't have the time to get stuck on that. We played really ugly and when the score got away from us, we almost gave up. We definitely can come back, but only if our performance is much, much better - not just better. I am saying that because Tau will play even more aggressively to finish the series and go to the Final Four. I hope that our gym will be full and that the power of our fans will help us return to Vitoria."
HOUSE, FRED
Tau Ceramica
"Game 2 will be a completely different one, I'm sure about that. They will play before a big crowd and it will be a very tough game for us. We must stay focused all the time and have a high concentration. We must communicate with each other on court pretty well and stay together as a team. I think there are some things we can improve. Rebounding is one of them, as well as we must improve our shooting."
Luis Scola - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica keeps fighting for its first-ever Euroleague title! Tau advanced to its third consecutive Final Four on Thursday by beating Olympiacos 89-95 in Pireaus, Greece, to sweep their best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series. Tau had thrashed Olympiacos 84-59 in Game 1 in Vitoria, Spain, so it won the series 2-0 and will face Panathinaikos in one of the Final Four semifinals at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA) on May 4. Luis Scola led the winners with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Tiago Splitter added 18 points on 7-of-9 two-pointers and 9 rebounds. Igor Rakocevic had 17 points and Sergi Vidal 13 for Tau. Alex Acker paced Olympiacos with 19 points. Henry Domercant added 17 for the Reds, Arvydas Macijauskas 13, Scoonie Penn 12 and Andrija Zizic 11. Tau led 41-44 at halftime and boosted its margin to 68-78 with 2 minutes to go. Tau kept its calm in the free throw line to hold off a late Olympiacos rally and advance to the Final Four.

Giannis Bouroussis found Domercant in the paint for a one-handed dunk to get the Reds going after tipoff, while Splitter connected for Tau to tie 2-2. Tau tried to feed the ball inside, while Olympiacos used its passing game to create open opportunities such as the triple by Acker that made it 6-2. Tau recorded its second basket 4 minutes after tipoff on a nice drive by Rakocevic, while Scola earned and hit 4 straight free throws that pushed the guests in front, 6-8. Sofoklis Schortsianitis climbed off the bench to immediately connect for Olympiacos. The Reds then pushed on the accelerator to get easy fastbreak points from Acker and Penn at 15-10. Macijauskas stepped on the Peace and Friendship Stadium floor for the first time in an official game and the fans welcomed him by singing his name, but it was Penn who boosted the difference to 17-11 on an off-balance shot. Sergi Vidal was there to curb the hosts' enthusiasm, however. First, he scored off an offensive board and then managed to beat the buzzer with a dunk that closed the first quarter at 19-16.

Arvydas Macijauskas - OlympiacosBouroussis drove and elevated for a nice layup to start the second quarter, but Splitter answered back with a basket-plus-free throw. Tau was getting points from second opportunities, as the visitors already had 7 offensive rebounds, 4 of them Splitter's. Macijauskas and Penn scored to keep Olympiacos safely in front at 25-19, but again Splitter reacted with a basket-plus-free throw. Sam Hoskin then nailed consecutive mid-range jumpers for the hosts and Bouroussis scored after offensive board to make it 29-23. However, Tau was unperturbed by Olympiacos’s enthusiastic play and passionate crowd. Serkan Erdogan chipped in 3 triples in less than 100 seconds to suddenly catapult the guests ahead at 31-32. Domercant stepped up for Olympiacos and connected form behind the arc, but the Rakocevic did the same for Tau to preserve a 35-35 tie. Prigioni and Mirza Teletovic hurt Olympiacos with consecutive layups in the open court as Tau went ahead 35-39 and dictated the tempo now. When Splitter and Rakocevic combined for 5 more points, the visitors were ahead 38-44. Domercant managed to nail a triple from downtown to trim the difference to 41-44 as both teams went to the lockers for halftime.

Tau came out and started the third quarter in style, sailing for an impressive 0-7 run with 5 points from Scola to seize a double-digit difference at 41-51. Poor decision-making caused a lot of trouble to Olympiacos before Bouroussis broke the drought, but Scola was now in the zone and scored another pair of buckets to give him 9 points in less than 3 minutes. Macijauskas made a catch-and-shoot triple to cut into the margin at 47-55. Zizic finished a three-point-play off an offensive board to allow Olympacos to come closer at 50-57. But Rakocevic was there to score a difficult triple, off-the-dribble and under pressure, to silence the crowd at 50-60. Olympiacos got its hope back, however, as Acker's easy layup and free throws brought the difference back down to single digits, 57-64, after 30 minutes.

Tiago Splitter - Tau CeramicaTo start the final quarter, Hoskin took the baseline to score and Acker connected with a fade-away jumper to make it a whole new ballgame at 61-65. Tau was now finding difficulties creating offensive opportunities, but that only lasted until Vidal came off the bench to boost the guests with a critical triple for a safe 61-68 cushion. Scola the scored easily in the paint and Splitter sank free throws to make it 61-72 with 5 minutes remaining. Macijauskas scored and Penn nailed a three-pointer for the Reds, but Rakocevic answered as Tau consistently found solutions. Domercant's easly layup and triple sandwiched around an inside shot by Splitter made it 71-78, giving the hosts some hope. But Tau was not ready to give up. Splitter dunked and time was running down. Some quick points from Panagiotis Vassilopoulos and Domercant made it 79-84 with 50 seconds to go, at which point Olympiacos fouled to make Tau shoot free throws. Pablo Prigioni was accurate and Macijauskas quickly made a basket for a 81-86 score 39 seconds before the final buzzer. Vidal and Acker eached made 1 of 2 foul shots, leaving an 82-87 board, but Scola made both of his, and when Prigioni stole from Domercant, everything was decided. Tau was now looking forward to a return to Athens in a few weeks to play Panathinaikos in the semifinals of the Final Four.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Tau is the best team in Euroleague efficiency. It is really hard to beat them. From minute 15 to 25 we played really bad. We had a good start and a good finish in the game, but this is not enough to beat a team as Tau. We reached our targets in some level, but we made too many turnovers. Maybe the fact that we are a new team cost us. We did not have the communication between the players that Tau had. The better team qualified tonight. But, it is unbelievable that Macijauskas was the one to play his heart out in both games. Three of the four teams that will reach the Final Four have higher budget than us. It is really a privilege to have in the bench players such as Papaloukas or Planinic. There is a negative feeling in the team and in the fans because of the results. Everything could have been better for us had we kept the margin against Dynamo Moscow in the group games. We wouldn't have had to play CSKA and Tau and things would have been different."
MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Tau Ceramica
"We knew that this game would be much tougher than the one in Spain. And it was really tough. In the first game Rakocevic stepped up for us, I think tonight Vidal had a great game and helped us a lot. But tonight more than one player had to contribute and they did. It’s very important to reach the Final Four. We have a month to get prepared for the Final Four and that's really important. I don't want to say much about the Final Four. I am happy to come back in Athens and I appreciate Panathinaikos and its fans."

Players

ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Olympiacos
"We lost too much energy in the first game in Spain and that cost us tonight. Our opponent was better in both games and they deserved to earn a berth in the Final Four. Tau proved more concentrated and they had solutions every time we managed to come closer. We now have already lost two of our targets: the Final Four and the Greek Cup. We must fight to win our last goal, the Greek Championship."
SPLITTER, TIAGO
Tau Ceramica
"The whole team was really concentrated from the first to the final minute of the game. That was the main reason for our win. I think we prepared the game very well, everyone acted according to the coaches' orders. This was a great game for us. It wasn't easy, it's tough to beat Olympiacos in Athens. We had some foul trouble and missed some free throws and Olympiacos really fought hard to get the lead. We are really happy to qualify for the Final Four and we are looking forward to come back here. We will study Panathinaikos' plays and will come in Athens to beat them and make it all the way."
