THE TAKE

Bizkaia Bilbao Basket hosts Spartak Saint Petersburg in Week 2 with sole possession of first place in Group E at stake. Bilbao comes in after winning on the road at Spirou Basket by the convincing score of 67-80, while Spartak has already shown it has the mettle to pull of the tight victory by holding off Turk Telecom 85-83 on opening day. Besides having the support of their loyal home fans, the hosts also have one of the deepest rosters in the entire Eurocup. For Bilbao, there is no real difference between starter and substitute as evidenced in the court time divvied up in Week1. Ten Bilbao players logged over 10 minutes apiece in route to victory and Spartak can expect the same waves of fresh legs rotating in and out versus Bilbao this week. Spartak also has options to draw on from its bench, but the visitors will surely need big outings from their main guns to have thoughts of heading back to Saint Petersburg with the huge road win. Although both teams are well-balanced, the main battle will be fought at the forward position, where both squads pack their biggest offensive punch. Bilbao deploys star Marko Banic who combined with fellow-forward Alex Mumbru for 30 points in Week 1. Damir Markota and Robert Conley also bring more scoring and power to the table for Bilbao. Spartak counters with starters James White, who led his team with 20 points versus Turk Telecom, and do-everything Yahor Meshcharakou, while Milovan Rakovic comes off the bench to shoot the ball. In the low post, Aleksandr Dedushkin and Goran Suton will be charged with keeping Bilbao’s Salva Guardia, who has deceptively good ball-handling for a big man, and high-jumper Jerome Moiso in check. Not to be outdone, the two backcourts will also be sure to offer fireworks. Spartak’s Levance Fields had a nice all-round game last week with 13 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds, and his partner Zakhar Pashutin and reserve guard Aleksey Zozulin combined for 26 points and 7 boards. Bilbao may have less scoring power on the perimeter, but its guards are excellent floor generals. Javi Rodriguez and shooting guard Renaldas Seibutis started last week, but it was Javi Salgado who racked up 10 points and 6 assists in a reserve role. Spartak’s guards will need to not only score the ball, but also disrupt the Bilbao offense at the point of attack in the backcourt to dream of the road win.

Quotes Head Coaches

VIDORRETA, TXUS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"Spartak is a tem that plays with intensity and aggressiveness, one of the keys that led them to the win at Turk Telekom's. They stole more balls, offensive rebounds and steals because they played really aggressive. They base their game on the two American guys: Fields and White. Fields plays for the team while white is a forward who likes to finalize plays and likes to attack the basket. We will have to be concentarted to secure a home win."
SHERF, ZVI
Spartak SPB
"Bilbao is a very good team which participated in the Final Eight of Eurocup last year. I was in Torino, I watched the games. Bilbao is a team from teh Spanish league and today teh Spanish league is the best league in Europe. We are not favorites but we'll try to use the possibilities we have to go into the second round. Now we have the toughest game in this stage."

SALGADO, JAVI
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"The team is gaining confidence after a rather slow start. The solution to the problem was in aknowledging our own mistakes and improve individually. We knew that results would finally come if we stayed on that track, and this game against Spartak in the Eurocup has to be the confirmation."
WHITE, JAMES
Spartak SPB
"I think it will be interesting and not an easy game. We won the game with Turk Telekom and now we are going to win the next game. It will also be interesting to play in the arena with a big crowd of Spanish fans. I don't know who can be considered favorite. Basketball in Spain is very good and we look through the records with the games of Bilbao. Now after the victory in the last game our team feels more comfortable. We don't have the pressure of all these losses in the Russian League and that's good."
Marko Banic . Bizkaia Bilbao BasketBizkaia Bilbao Basket improved to 2-0 in Eurocup Group E by crushing Spartak St. Petersburg 85-62 on Tuesday evening. Bilbao took charge early, mounting a double-digit lead early in the second quarter, extending it to 41-27 by halftime and reaching 25 in the third quarter as Spartak had no answers for the hosts’ shooting. Head coach Txus Vidorreta’s men were good for 11 three-pointers in 21 tries (52.4%) led by Paco Vazquez’s 5-for-5 effort. The hosts also outrebounded Spartak 34-25 and dished 19 assists to the visitors’ 9. All-Eurocup forward Marko Banic paced the winners with 18 points. Vazquez added 15 and Alex Mumbru and Renaldas Seibutis had 10 each for Bilbao, which travels to Turk Telekom next week. James White paced Spartak with 17 points. Yahor Meshcharakou added 11 points and Aleksey Zozulin scored 10 for head coach Zvika Sherf’s squad, which dropped to 1-1 and hosts Spirou Basket in Week 3.

Bilbao won the opening tip and Seibutis broke the ice for the home team before White put Spartak on the board from the line. White soon hit from downtown to give the visitors their first lead and the teams proceeded to trade baskets for the next few possessions. Bilbao threatened to break away as Mumbru scored twice in an 8-0 run to make it 14-7. Spartak’s press resulted in three straight steals and three baskets that drew the visitors within 1. After a Bilbao timeout and three substitutions, Damir Markota drained a three-pointer and Jerome Moiso scored inside the keep the hosts in control. Despite a White slam, Vazquez drilled a three to make it 22-15 after 10 minutes. Neither scored for nearly three minutes to open the second quarter before Moiso converted a basket-plus-foul to give Bilbao its first double-digit lead. Vazquez bettered Zozulin’s basket with a three and after Goran Suton scored for Spartak, back-to-back triples by Vazquez and Janis Blums made it 34-19. Despite a basket from Milovan Rakovic, Spartak had no answers as Banic scored twice to increase the gap to 17. Zozulin added a three and Evgeny Kolensikov a two-pointer to narrow the gap to 41-27 by halftime.

James White - Spartak St. PetersburgMarkota and White traded baskets early in the second half as neither team was able to make any real progress. Mumbru changed that with a pair of three-pointers sandwiching 2 Zakhar Pashutin free throws as the Bilbao lead soared again. Banic took it past 20 points and later added free throws in a 9-0 push that made it 59-34. Levance Fields finally made his first basket for Spartak and Zozulin added a layup, but Bilbao was now firmly in control. Banic restored a 25-point margin Robert Conley added 2 more free throws before White’s free throw ended the third-quarter at 65-39. Spartak showed some fight as Kolensikov and White scored to start the last period, but in no time a Javi Salgado triple pushed Bilbao to 70-43. Zozulin continued to push for the visitors, but another Vazquez triple restored the home team’s dominance. In the closing minutes, St. Petersburg reeled off 9 straight points to make the final result more respectable, but the stronger team for the night was long clear.

Head Coaches

VIDORRETA, TXUS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"We maintained the good trend of the last weeks. We have worked hard in defense with demanding physical work during the first three quarters. We reache halftime leading by 14 and it could have been more, as we played too fancy at times. In the third period, we solved the game. The game was never in danger and I think the final difference is fair to what was seen on court. What I was after was that my team didn't show signs of doubt. We thought winning two in a row was good, but three is even better."
SHERF, ZVI
Spartak SPB
"I am disappointed by the way we played tonight. The next time we play against Bilbao I promise we will play better. We knew that Bilbao Basket had good three-point shooters and we never knew how to stop them. They already went to the Final Eight last year and I think they can go far in this Eurocup, too. Together with Valencia, I think they can be in the Eurocup Finals."
