THE TAKE

The 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season starts with a very special showdown, as Olympiacos hosts Real Madrid on Monday at 20:45 CET. Both teams faced each other at the Euroleague Opening Game on October 16, 2000. Madrid beat Olympiacos 75-73 back then and 10 years later, both teams are serious about opening another decade with a victory. Madrid and Olympiacos also faced in the 1995 European Cup final and last met in the 2008-09 Quarterfinal Playoffs, in which the Reds sealed a Final Four ticket for the first time in a decade with a road win at Madrid, which is waiting longer for its Final Four return. Both teams have worked hard to put together very competitive teams. Madrid is facing injury problems, as Pablo Prigioni will not be able to help his team this week. Olympiacos will be without veteran forward Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, who might much of the regular season following a back operation. As Madrid, Sergio Rodriguez will be coach Ettore Messina's floor general, with explosive combo guard Sergio Llull ready to offer a helping hand. Both players will have the tough mission to guard reigning Euroleague MVP Milos Teodosic, who can dominate game's with poise and daring. Teodosic has a pair of esteemed running mates, too, in former Euroleague winners and Final Four MVPs Theo Papaloukas and Vassilis Spanoulis. Papaloukas is a natural-born leader with great court sense while Spanoulis will see most playing time at shooting guard to make the most out of his one-on-one skills. Off-guard Jamon Lucas offers explosiveness and physical skills to guard Llull while Yotam Halperin provides experience and scoring power for the Reds. Marko Keselj will see most minutes at small forward due to his deep range and size. Keselj will not have it easy against Carlos Suarez and above all, versatile forward Novica Velickovic, who could be Madrid's x-factor due to his size, ballhandling and winning mentality. Clay Tucker will offer firepower from all angles and Sergi Vidal may see playing time against Spanoulis and Michalis Pelekanos. The battle in the paint is one of the biggest keys to this game. Ante Tomic can make the difference for Madrid under the baskets due to his size and post skills. He will get help from veteran rebounding ace Felipe Reyes, three-point threat Jorge Garbajosa and defensive center D'or Fischer. Garbajosa faces a tough defensive challenge against Eurocup Finals MVP Matt Nielsen. Rasho Nesterovic, back in the Euroleague for the first time since 1999, needs to use his experience and size against Tomic. Meanwhile, Fischer and Reyes must play tough against former All-Euroleague big man Ioannis Bourousis. Legendary head coach Dusan Ivkovic, who ledOlympiacos to its only continental crown in 1997, is back to the competition after three years to face Messina, the man who replaced him at CSKA earlier this decade. Expect a big showdown that could come down to small details, a perfect start for what promises to be a Turkish Airlines Euroleague season to remember!

GAME NOTES: Olympiacos

Olympiacos lost the original Euroleague opening game against Real Madrid on October 16, 2000. Madrid downed the Reds 75-73 behind 14 points from Alberto Angulo.

Olympiacos made it to the Final Four in 2009 for the first time in a decade, then repeated last year, reaching the final.

Olympiacos won its only Euroleague title in 1997 under Dusan Ivkovic, who rejoined the team this season. He is the only coach who has won the Euroleague, Saporta, Korac and Eurocup titles.

Last meeting: to reach that Final Four in 2009, Olympiacos downed Madrid 3-1 in the best-of-five Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs series.

Olympiacos features two Euroleague MVPs - Milos Teodosic (last year) and Theo Papaloukas (2007), who is a two-time Euroleague winner and former Final Four MVP (2006), too.

Vassilis Spanoulis was the 2009 Final Four MVP. He and teammate Andreas Glyniadakis are 2 of just 14 players who have worked for both Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. The list includes players like Dino Radja, Alexander Volkov, Nikos Ekonomou, Zarko Paspalj, Patrick Femerling and Johnny Rogers.

At age 26, Olympiacos guard Yotam Halperin has played in six Final Fours. The record of 8 is held by Fragiskos Alvertis, J.R. Holden and Theo Papaloukas (the last two players have done so consecutively).

Papaloukas is the Euroleague's all-time leader in assists (883) and steals (287). He will play his 200th Euroleague game very soon - already took part in 197.

Matt Nielsen can be the third Eurocup Finals MVP to win the Euroleague title. Previously, Dejan Tomasevic and Robertas Javtokas did so - both with Panathinaikos in 2007.

Milos Teodosic is a teammate of Real Madrid forward Novica Velickovic on the Serbian national team. Together they won silver medals at the 2009 European championships and placed fourth at the 2010 FIBA World Championships.

Michalis Pelekanos played for Real Madrid during the 2007-08 season. Felipe Reyes and Sergio Llull are the only current Madrid players still on the roster from that time.

Rasho Nesterovic's last Euroleague game was the 1999 final, when he and Kinder Bologna lost in Munich to Zalgiris. He was coached that season by Ettore Messina

Ionannis Bourousis recorded one of the best games of his career in the 2009 Quarterfinal Playoffs-clinching win at Real Madrid. Bourousis scored 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 3 shots for a 34 index ranking as the Reds won 75-78.

Theo Papaloukas tied a playoffs record with 13 assists against Real Madrid in the opening game of the Quarterfinal Playoffs in 2009.

Yotam Halperin owns a streak of 15 consecutive free throws made without a miss.

Jamon Lucas has recorded a steal in each of his last eight Euroleague games.

Milos Teodosic has recorded at least 1 steal in each of his last 11 Euroleague appearances.

Teodosic has scored in double figures in each of his last 10 Euroleague games. He has also made at least 1 three-pointer in all of those 10 games.

Teodosic has a streak of 10 consecutive free throws made without a miss.

Vassilis Spanoulis needs 4 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Marko Keselj will make his Euroleague debut.

Head coach Dusko Ivkovic returns to the sidelines of a Euroleague game for the first time since April 2007, when he and Dynamo Moscow were eliminated from the playoffs by eventual champion Panathinaikos.

GAME NOTES: Real Madrid

Real Madrid is the winningest team in Europe with 9 continental titles. Only one of them, however, came in the last 30 years. It was in 1995 - against Olympiacos - when Arvydas Sabonis and Joe Arlauckas were Madrid's stars.

Real Madrid won the Euroleague opening game against Olympiacos on October 16, 2000. Madrid downed the Reds 75-73 behind 14 points from Alberto Angulo.

Real Madrid has not made it to the Euroleague Final Four since 1996. Head coach Ettore Messina, however, reached the Final Four 8 times - and won four titles - since he first took Virtus to the big event in 1998.

None of this season's Madrid players have won the Euroleague title. Three of them were close, as Pablo Prigioni and Sergi Vidal lost the Euroleague final with Tau in 2005 and Jorge Garbajosa reached the title game with Benetton in 2003.

Sergio Rodriguez and Carlos Suarez played together in Estudiantes and led Spain to the he gold medal at the 2004 European under-18 Championship.

Clay Tucker had to go a long way to make his Euroleague debut this season. He made his pro debut in Sweden, played for several minor US leagues and all around Europe. This is his third Spanish team in as many years.

Real Madrid features three former World Champions - Jorge Garbajosa, Felipe Reyes and Sergio Rodriguez - from Spain's 2006 team.

Messina not only won four Euroleague titles - two with Kinder, two with CSKA - but also made it to the Euroleague final in all of his eight Final Four appearances. Madrid could be his fourth Final Four team - something that only Zeljko Obradovic and Bozidar Maljkovic - 5 each - did in the past.

Felipe Reyes scored a Euroleague career-high 23 points in Game 2 of the 2009 Quarterfinal Playoff series against Olympiacos. He matched a career high with 4 assists in Game 3 of that series.

D'or Fischer had the best game of his Euroleague career with a 29 performance index rating against Olympiacos when he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in a January 2009 victory in Israel. Fischer tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks in that game.

Carlos Suarez makes his return to the Euroleague for the first time since February 2005, when he was a teenager playing for Estudiantes. In Suarez’s last Euroleague appearance, he scored 20 points against Olympiacos.

Pablo Prigioni has a streak of 15 consecutive free throws made without a miss.

Fischer has blocked at least 1 shot in each of his last 10 Euroleague games played. He blocked multiple shots in his last five appearances.

Jorge Garbajosa was a teammate of Olympiacos center Rasho Nesterovic for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with Toronto in the NBA.

Head coach Ettore Messina coached Olympiacos guard Theo Papaloukas to Euroleague titles in 2006 and 2008 when the pair was with CSKA Moscow.

Sergio Rodriguez makes his return to the Euroleague for the first time since February 2005, when he was a teenager playing for Estudiantes.

Clay Tucker will make his Euroleague debut this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Olympiacos
"Every opening game in every competition is difficult and this one becomes more difficult because we played only one official match and we are not ready. Real Madrid is a great team which has changed its philosophy and has a lot of aggressive players such as Tucker, Rodriguez, Suarez and Llull. I think that Real is trying to play an up-tempo game this season, so we have to pay attention on defense. Olympiacos is a team that will also try to play faster than it used to do. There are not fast or slow teams, but only teams that run or don't run. We count on the help from our fans, but I never believe that the supporters can win a match."
MESSINA, ETTORE
Real Madrid
"It's an honor for these two clubs to play the inaugural game of this new 2010-11 edition of the Euroleague. Indepent of what might happen in the game, I think these are two teams with a lot of future, with very interesting young players. I hope that we see each other as rivals in many important games. Olympiacos is a solid, well organized team. As is often the case in road games, limiting turnovers and controlling the rebounds will be key in order to have the game tempo that interests us. We are working and improving game by game, and now we want to start the Euroleague on the right foot."

"This is the first game of the new Euroleague season, where we will try to go all the way. Real is a big and glorious club and at this moment they are more ready than us, because they have played more official matches. It's going to be a tough game, but we play at home and I am optimistic that we can win the match and inaugurate the season in the best possible way."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"We are very excited about this first game of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season because it's the opening game and because it will be played on a big stage with a well known, and very difficult, opponent. Olympiacos is the reigning runner-up of the contentent's top competition and has reenforced its roster very well. They have a very complete lineup and without doubt will be one of the major title candidates this season. We arrive with confidence, but we know that to grab our first victory of the Euroleague season, we will have to play a very solid game."

Ioannis Bourousis - Olympiacos - Opening Game Euroleague 2010-11Olympiacos BC became the first team to register a win in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague by downing Real Madrid 82-66 in the competition's Opening Game at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Pireaus, Greece in Group B on Monday. Olympiacos proved right away that it is a top candidate to go far in the Euroleague this season, but Madrid showed great character and stayed in the game for the opening three quarters. Ioannis Bourousis paced the winners with 16 points and 7 rebounds in less than 23 minutes. Vassilis Spanoulis had 16 points, reigning Euroleague MVP Milos Teodosic added 15 and Rasho Nesterovic netted 12 for Olympiacos. Teodosic and Spanoulis each dished 7 assists, one shy of the Euroleague Opening Game record that still belongs to Theo Papaloukas. Sergio Llull led Madrid with 18 points. Carlos Suarez added 12 and Ante Tomic scored 10 for the guests. Felipe Reyes led a 0-9 run that allowed Madrid to take its biggest lead, 19-28, early in the second quarter. Bourousis stepped up in an 11-0 run that brought Olympiacos back to life and free throws by Spanoulis put the Reds ahead 36-35 at halftime. Olympiacos did not trail after the break, but a three-pointer by Suarez kept Madrid as close as 57-56. Olympiacos broke the game ope with a 15-0 run highlighted by Loukas Mavrokefalidis's incredible buzzer-beating triple. Teodosic struck from downtown to make it 72-56 and Madrid did not recover in the final five minutes.

Felipe Reyes hit free throws to become the first player to score in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season. Nielsen shined with an uncontested dunk but a mid-range jumper by Llull gave Madrid a 2-4 edge. Kostas Papanikolaou and Sergio Rodriguez traded layups but a jump hook by Nesterovic and a driving layup by Spanoulis put the Reds back ahead, 8-6. Madrid called timeout to adjust its man-to-man defense and started to play with more intensity. The guests, however, struggled to find open looks until Llull beat the shot clock buzzer with an off-balance triple. Teodosic took over with a wild driving layup that D'or Fischer matched with a tip-in for a 10-11 score. Rodriguez scored in transition, as Olympiacos could not find the way to the basket now until Theo Papaloukas came off the bench and found Nesterovic for a jump hook. Bourousis followed with a three-point play for a new Olympiacos lead, 15-13. Madrid tried to improve its offense with Llull and Clay Tucker at both guards. Llull buried a fadeaway jumper but free throws by Bourousis and Carlos Suarez fixed the score at 17-17 after 10 minutes.

Carlos Suarez - Real Madrid - Opening Game Euroleague 2010-11Llull canned a six-meter jumper early in the second quarter, as Olympiacos kept trying to run its offense through Bourousis. Madrid managed to double-team him down low but an acrobatic basket by Papaloukas tied it up, 19-19. Tucker sank a catch-and-shoot jumper that Tomic followed with a smooth move in the low post for a four-point Madrid lead, 19-23. Reyes buried a long jumper and bettered that with a three-pointer that silenced the crowd at 19-28, after a 0-9 run. Nielsen stepped up with a jump hook that Llull matched with a big jumper off a screen. Olympiacos faced early foul trouble, as Nielsen picked up his third midway through the second quarter. Spanoulis shined with his trademark driving layup and a technical foul on Madrid coach Ettore Messina allowed Teodosic to get his team within 25-30. Bourousis sank an open triple and added an easy basket to tie again, 30-30. Madrid kept missing open shots and Spanoulis scored in penetration to complete the Reds' comeback, 32-30, after an 11-0 run. Fischer sank free throws that an unstoppable Bourousis overcame with a big basket. Tucker nailed a triple but free throws by Spanoulis restored a 36-35 Olympiacos edge at halftime.

Teodosic struck from downtown immediately after the break but a jump hook by Tomic kept Madrid within 39-37. Nesterovic scored in the paint, as Olympiacos tried to open the floor with Zoran Erceg at power forward. Llull made free throws that Teodosic improved with a three-pointer for a 44-39 Olympiacos lead. The hosts kept powering the offensive board and Nesterovic finished a long, two-chance offense with a layup. Reyes and Spanoulis did not miss from the foul line but Papaloukas found Nesterovic for a layup-plus-foul that boosted the Reds' lead to 51-42 midway through the third quarter. Llull sank a huge triple, while on defense Madrid tried a 2-3 zone. Papaloukas found space for an uncontested layup that Suarez outdid with a corner triple, cutting the gap to 53-49. Loukas Mavrokefalidis shined with a put-back basket, as Olympiacos tried Spanoulis, Papaloukas and Teodosic together on court. Milos Teodosic - Olympiacos - Opening Game Euroleague 2010-11Suarez kept pacing Madrid with a power layup and Llull got his team even closer, 55-53. Bourousis set the crowd on fire with a two-handed dunk and even when Suarez banked in a three-pointer, Mavrokefalidis scored down low and beat the buzzer with a half-court bomb that restored a 62-56 Olympiacos lead after 30 minutes.

Madrid switched back to man-to-man defense early in the fourth quarter but Papaloukas found Teodosic for an easy basket. Olympiacos played much more aggressively in defense, winning the physical battle under the rims. Meanwhile, a running three-pointer by Keselj and a fast break layup by Mavrokefalidis broke the game open, 69-56. Madrid called a much-needed timeout but Teodosic - who else? - buried a long three-pointer, capping a 15-0 run that bridged between the final quarters. Tomic tried to ignite the guests' comeback with a layup and a jump hook, as Olympiacos used long possessions to run the game clock down. Sergi Vidal capped a 0-6 run with a driving layup that forced the Reds to call timeout at 72-62. Jamon Gordon picked up a loose ball and put it in, but Madrid did not find the way to the basket when it mattered most. Free throws by Spanoulis sealed the outcome, 77-62, as the Olympiacos fans started celebrating that their team had opened the Euroleague season with an impressive win.

Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Olympiacos
"We deserved the win tonight. We had a bunch of problems, though. This was the first Turkish Airlines Euroleague game of the season, and we only had played one more official game so far. We are together as a team since four weeks ago: that is not enough time to play as expected. We thought that some players would help us more, but Papanikolaou, Keselj and Mavrokefalidis did not deliver in the second period, and we were lucky not to be down by many points at halftime. We won the batlle inside with Nesterovic and Bouroussis, who did a good job against Tomic and Reyes. Especially, Bouroussis was a surprise for me since he came back from injury and was not completely ready to play. We had 15 assists in the second half, had a great reaction against Madrid's zone defense and I am very happy with that. We commited only 10 turnovers in contrast to our 25 in the Greek Cup game against Panellinios. That made the difference between the two teams tonight; the assist-to-turnovers ratio. I don't think that the final margin will play any role in the final group standings. It's too early to talk about that."
MESSINA, ETTORE
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to Olympiacos; they deserved the win tonight. They played very well in crucial moments and that made the difference. We did some good things on the court tonight, but did some others wrong, too. And it's difficult to play against veteran players such as Papaloukas, Spanoulis, Nesterovic and Bouroussis. They played smarter and we did not have the answers. We knew from the beginning of the season that we would need time to improve as we have many young players in our line-up and in the starting five. In four-five months the situation will have changed. We will be a better team by then."

Players

MAVROKEFALIDES, LOUKAS
Olympiacos
"It's difficult to open the Turkish Airlines Euroleague against such a great team as Real Madrid. We knew that they have played more official games than us so far in the season, so they might have been more ready. And that was evident on court in the first half. However, we soon balanced the game, strengthened our defense and executed well on offense in order to take over the game's tempo. At times we played some amazing defense and that led us to the win. I was lucky to hit that three-point buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter, but I think we were already playing better."
SPANOULIS, VASSILIS
Olympiacos
"This was the first game of the season and we were a bit nervous. We were down by 9 points early in the game, but did not panic. We kept our composure, improved our confidence and managed to come back soon. After halftime, we were ready to play better. We had some nice collaborations and finished some good plays. That is important; to find out as quick as you can what is going wrong and correct it. We did that and won. The team's style will be aggressive defense that will lead to good opportunities on the offensive end. This was my personal debut in an Olympiacos' shirt in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. I felt very nice and I am happy that we gave our fans the opportunity to celebrate a win against a big opponent such as Real Madrid."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"We knew that Olympiacos has an excellent team. After all, they were last season's runners-up and are amongst the favorites to go all the way this year. We are a young team and have plenty of room for improvement. I think we controlled the game tempo until halftime. We created open shots, had the rhythm and executed well. But at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, Olympiacos had a string of good plays to which we offered no answers."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"It was a tight game for three quarters. However, Olympiacos played better defense in the last period, caused us trouble to play together and ran away. They managed to hit some difficult shots and that raised their morale. They started to play more confident and we had difficulties to react. In the first half we moved the ball well and created many open opportunities, but we did not cuntinue in this fashion. We have a young team, we are willing to work hard and improve game by game. The next game is against Unicaja and we will proctice to be ready for that."
