THE TAKE

RheinEnergie Cologne hosts Le Mans Sarthe Basket on Thursday for a Group A clash in Dusseldorf, Germany, that could have ramifications for their Top 16 hopes. Both teams enter the game tied for fifth place in the group with 2-3 records. Since dropping a 32-point home decision to Tau Ceramica in Week 3, RheinEnergie has reeled off back-to-back wins over Climamio and Prokom. Last week Marcus Faison came off the bench for 22 points to lead the charge. Le Mans started the season in promising form, winning two of its first three games, but has since dropped two straight. Last week the French champion turned in its worst performance yet, a 74-57 loss at Dynamo Moscow. Aside from Eric Campbell's double-double, little went right for Le Mans, which dished just 5 assists and committed 20 turnovers. These teams are meeting for the first time in the Euroleague, but they did play each other twice two seasons ago in the ULEB Cup, with the home team winning each contest. Statistically, RheinEnergie is a team that is strongest inside. The German champion leads the Euroleague in two-point field-goal shooting at 60.8%, while their 19.8 turnovers per game is by far the most in the competition. Le Mans has drawn the fewest fouls in the Euroleague (16.8 per game) and is last in steals (6.2 spg.), but still ranks among the best teams with 17 assists per game. Tyson Wheeler (7.4 ppg.,4.2 apg.) is the team's top disher, with the points coming from the frontline of center Sandro Nicevic (12 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) and forwards Campbell (15.2 ppg., 7.2 rpg.) and Kenny Gregory (16.4 ppg., 6.6 rpg.). RheinEnergie's Faison (18.2 ppg.) is the second-best scorer in the league, converting his shots with ridiculous accuracy - 68% on two-pointers, 61.1% on three-pointers and 92.3% from the line. Forward Ronnie Burrell (11.8 ppg., 6.6 rpg.), the Week 4 MVP, is the team's second option, while center Marcin Gortat (10.2 ppg.) and point guard Demond Mallet (10.4 ppg.) round out the top scorers. A key matchup to see where this game is heading will be at shooting guard, where youngsters Pape Phillipe Amagou and Yannick Bokolo will try to slow down Faison, a move which, if successful, could dent RheinEnergie's game plan and offer a chance for victory to the guests.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Le Mans likes to play in the open court, and they have the players for that kind of game. While they’re not extremely tall, they’re very mobile and very adapt at running fastbreaks. Another strong point is their offensive rebounding. They are very well coached and play aggressive defense. Le Mans struggles with outside shooting sometimes, but when they are in a good rhythm, they can beat anybody. So while we want to take our chances with our own fastbreaks, we must make smart decisions when to run and when to go to our halfcourt game. We expect them to pressure us defensively, and the question is: How do we respond to that?"
COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"Even though there are still a lot of games to play in the Euroleague, this match is already very important for both teams. Cologne is on a streak of two wins in a row, which surely helps their self-confidence. After a bad match in Moscow, we must pull ourselves together. First, we’ll have to limit their attack, which has proven to be very efficient during their two latest wins (with an average of 87 points and good percentages), because they play with mobility and movement."

FAISON, MARCUS

"It was important for us to finally get a win at home last week. More importantly, it got us closer in the race against our competetion. So this next game is going to be real big, because should we win, we would be ahead of Le Mans in the standings. Their team is very athletic, and they love to get up and down the floor. But we like to go up and down also, so this should be a very exciting game. We have to be smart on offense, not trying to run every time, and try to get offensive rebounds in order to keep them from fastbreaking. Personally, I’m looking forward to going out there and just playing the way I’ve been playing. After all, I had been trying to play in this league for two or three years now."
KOFFI, ALAIN
Le Mans
"After two defeats, one in the French championship and the other in the Euroleague, we are in need of a win. It would allow us to relaunch ourselves in the Euroleague and to recover self-confidence in both competitions. Cologne will probably be hard to defeat. They have gained the confidence we’re aiming to recover by winning their two latest matches in the Euroleague. Plus, they’ll play at home with their own crowed. We’re going to attempt to break their offensive game while imposing ours. Our team has one of the best Euroleague defenses since the beginning of the season, which constitutes a part of our strength."
Kenny Gregory - Le Mans Le Mans Sarthe Basket bounced back from consecutive losses in Group A by beating RheinEnergie 73-79 in Dusseldorf, Germany on Thursday. Le Mans improved to 3-3 and ties for the third place in the Group A standings, while RheinEnergie dropped to 2-4. Kenny Gregory led the winners with 18 points. Eric Campbell posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, Sandro Nicevic also had 15 points and Nebojsa Bogavac 14 for Le Mans. Marcus Faison had 14 points for RheinEnergie, Immanuel McElroy added 13, Janar Talts had 12 while Ronnie Burrell and Marcin Gortat each tallied 11 for the hosts. Gregory and an outstanding Campbell provided a physical exhibition which allowed Le Mans to get a 36-42 edge at halftime. McElroy led the RheinEnergie comeback after the break, but Gregory and Nicevic helped the guests to keep the lead, 52-59, after three quarters. A three-pointer by Faison brought RheinEnergie within 60-61, but Nebojsa Bogavac and Tyson Wheeler fueled a 0-8 run which allowed Le Mans to get a safe lead and never look back.

Le Mans got off to the better start as RheinEnergie missed their first four shots of the game, scoring only on a free throw by Gortat. After Campbell grabbed an offensive rebound and scored inside, the visitors led 1-5. Gortat ended the draoght with an offensive board and lay-in of his own, then joined Burrell in adding another basket each as the hosts went ahead for the first time, 7-5. Le Mans answered with a pair of jump shots by Gregory, while the hosts looked to Burrell for their offense. He scored down low and found McElroy and Gortat with assists for easy points inside. After Yannick Bokolo hit a three-pointer for Le Mans, the hosts closed out the quarter with 7 unanswered points, as Gortat dunked and Janar Talts scored on a tip-in and a three-pointer to give RheinEnergie a 20-14 lead at intermission.

Le Mans went inside to center Nicevic to start the second quarter, and the big man answered the call with a three-point play and a nice turnaround jump shot sandwiched around a three-pointer by Gregory. Faison hit his first shot of the night for RheinEnergie, from downtown. When Nadjfeji followed with a fastbreak runner and Burrell a jumper, the hosts led by 27-21. But RheinEnergie had no answer for the power game of Campbell, who slammed twice and muscled the ball into the basket to tie the game at 27-27. After an exchange of baskets, Nicevic got Le Mans its first lead since the opening minutes with a pair of free throws. Bogavac’s second triple of the quarter, free throws by Wheeler and another dunk by Campbell gave the visitors 9 unanswered points. RheinEnergie had time, however, for Nadjfeji to twice find McElroy under the basket for open layups that cut the Le Mans lead to 36-42 at halftime.

Immanuel McElroy - RheinEnergieBurrell opened the second half with a pair of free throws that Nicevic answered with a hook shot. That, however, would be the only basket for Le Mans over the first 4 minutes of the quarter. As RheinEnergie’s defense picked up, Mallet hit a three-pointer while Nadjfeji and McElroy scored inside to let the hosts seize a new lead at 46-44. Pape-Phillipe Amagou hit a triple to put Le Mans back in front. After baskets by Nadjfeji and McElroy, however, Marcin Gortat dunked home a miss to make it 52-47 for RheinEnergie. But the hosts could not capitalize on their momentum. Instead, Le Mans reeled off 8 straight points – 4 by Gregory – to recapture the lead. A midrange jump shot by Bogavac and free throws by Nicevic extended the Le Mans lead to 52-59 after 30 minutes.

Again in the fourth quarter, RheinEnergie came out strong, as free throws by Burrell and a transition jump shot by McElroy narrowed the margin to 55-59. The hosts' defense was also giving Le Mans problems. It took until the 6:30 mark for Campbell to score his team's first points of the quarter, but even then Mallet fed Burrell for a dunk and hit a three-pointer himself to make it 60-61, forcing a Le Mans timeout. The visitors responded, too. Bogavac hit a tough triple and Wheeler completed a three-point play to open the lead up again, all the way to 60-69 as Gregory hit a fadeaway over Gortat. Less than 3 minutes remained, but RheinEnergie challenged again, as Faison was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all the free throws. Another pair of free throws by Talts got the hosts to withing 65-70, but 3 more points by Campbell and a nifty layup by Wheeler put the game away for Le Mans, even with Faison scoring 8 quick points in a row as time ran out.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Bogavac coming back was a real surprise. But he obviously didn’t forget how to play basketball while he was out with his injury. In crucial moments, when the team needed him to score, he took responsibility, and that was one of the keys. We had many turnovers, some when we should have held the ball and made them work on defense instead of trying difficult passes. In the second half, Le Mans changed their defense and really defended inside. There was no chance to pass the ball in the zone or to play in the low post. Our only chance was to shoot from outside and make them come out, and unfortunately, we couldn’t hit our shots consistently."

Players

GORTAT, MARCIN
RheinEnergie
"At the end of games like these, being a young team, we could definitely use some more experience. Le Mans really didn’t run a lot of offensive plays, they played one-on-one for most of the time. I feel sorry because we pretty much had the game in our hand. Marcus (Faison) didn’t get enough shots for us, except for the end of the game. They are a good team, but not a better team than us. And next time, we’ll know what’s coming."
GREGORY, KENNY
Le Mans
"We had Nebojsa (Bogavac) back and he opens a lot of things up for us, because he is our best shooter. It’s good to have him back out there after his injury. The key was making our shots when we had a one-point game. This is a big win. Both our team and Cologne have been the surprises of our group so far. We knew that if we lost this game, it would be tough to even think about possibly advancing, because we play some great teams in the upcoming weeks. Now, we’re still in the mix."
